One Man Two Guvnors Services Database
I am going to be comparing three different areas of Performing arts services that we can use alongside our performance, I’ll take into consideration the price, accessibility, quality and timing in order to find the company that matches our needs the best.
Firstly, I’ll compare 3 different costume companies that we could use to get our costume for the play from, as costume is a big part of the performance that we have to get right in order to show the era we are setting the play in, each actor and character in the play needs an individual costume. I have collected together examples of costume from One Man Two Guvnors so that I have an idea of what we need and I have created a database of places we can get this sort of costume from:
Costume:
Dolly
Lloyd Boateng
Charlie “the Duck” Clench
Pauline Clench
Harry Dangle
Alan Dangle

Costume Hire Database:
Jackie’s Fancy Dress
Tel: 01226 747474 E-mail: [email protected]
They offer a selection of men’s and women’s costumes from the 60s era, and a lot of other costume selection too. They are situated in Barnsley so they are about 45 minutes away to drive, but they do offer a deliver service for an extra cost. Most costumes are available for hire but some costumes can be bought too, they do not note a hiring period, but it says that it will be agreed upon and if it goes over that time, there is an item charge of £5 a day until it is returned.
Script to Screen Costume
Tel: 02920454222 E-mail: [email protected]
They offer a selection of men’s and women’s costumes from the 1960s and plenty of other selections too in different categories. They are situated in Cardiff but they have a delivery service that can do next day delivery for anywhere in the UK. A lot of the costumes are only available for hire, and the hiring period is 5 days for most items.
Revival
Tel: 01484 422255 E-mail: [email protected]
They offer a wide range of costumes suitable for the play, they offer men and women’s costumes from the 1960s and they offer Gangster costumes too, but they only offer collection of costumes and the store is about an hours drive away (Huddersfield). Costumes can be bought but if we are hiring costume, the hiring period is up to 7 days, and there is a deposit needed, but if costume is kept in good condition, this will be fully refunded.
Comparisons: Location - Jackie’s is the closest being in Barnsley (about 45 min away) and they also offer a delivery service for a price, then Revival is the second closest being in Huddersfield (about 1hr 10min away) but they do not offer delivery. Script to Screen is the furthest away in Cardiff but they deliver the costumes. Costume selection - I think the widest costume range is at Revival as they have the most costumes in the 60s era and they also have mob or gangster costumes that we could use. Next, I would say Script to Screen has a good selection of costumes we could use, and lastly I think Jackie’s doesn’t have as many suitable costumes for the play. Prices - The prices for Jackie’s are around £25 for collection hire and £40 for delivered hire. The prices for Script to Screen are from £20 to £30 and the delivery charge is £20. The price for Revival is from around £15 to £40. Revival has the some of the cheapest selections but also has some of the more expensive selections so on average I think the prices for each store are around the same, 25/30 pound. Hire period - I can not find a hiring period for Jackie’s, it is to be agreed upon when ordering, so I would imagine that they are flexible with the times, Revival has a period of 7 days and Script to Screen has a period of 5 days.
I think the best place to get costume for One Man Two Guvnors would be from Revival, as I think they have the most diverse and accurate costumes from the selection online, I think we would be able to find what we need from this place. They don’t deliver but the shop is only an hours drive away and I think it would be better for us to go and check out the costumes before we pay for them first anyway. Some of the costume are more expensive than the other websites, but the average costume I would say is cheaper, they had costumes for around £13 and the average I would say was at around £20, so I think it has good prices too.
Secondly, I’ll be comparing 3 different set hire companies, of which we could use in the play. This is important as there are a lot of different settings in the show that we need to portray in order for the action of it to make sense. The set is put together by the tech team and then used by the cast, so we need to make sure that we have everything for a full set. I have collected pictures together of what the set looks like and what we will need from the set hires:
Set:
Charlie’s house:
The set consists of - The back wall decorated as a living room, 4 chairs, dinging table, lamp.
Cricketer’s Arms:
The set consists of - Back wall and flats decorated as a pub and houses.
The pier:
The set consists of - Back wall with sea view, pier railings, 2 lampposts, buoy.
Aperitif bar:
The set consists of - Back wall with many picture frames and fake stairs, dining table, trolley, 2 chairs, cutout.
Rooms 10 and 11:
The set consists of - 2 big trunks, ironing board, 3 doors, pictures of cricketers.
Set Hire Database:
Backdrop Hire
Tel: 01142 513587 E-mail: [email protected]
They do backdrops only, they have a big selection of sets, including a pier, a selection of street backdrops, and living rooms, if they don’t have everything that we need, we can also get in touch to request a certain set backdrop that we require. They have a hiring period of 5 days which is enough time for our tech run and the shows, the price for a full size backdrop for 5 days is £120 (+VAT). The hire is situated in Sheffield with a warehouse in Chesterfield, so it is close enough to collect, but they also deliver them.
B&Q
Tel: 01246 555867 E-mail/contact form: https://www.diy.com/contact_us?icamp=contact_email
B&Q sells a lot of items that we need for set, such as doors, lamps, tables and chairs, picture frames, and if we are going to be decorating the set ourselves, they have wallpaper and paint that we can use. Though they don’t have the more unconventional items such as a cut out, lampposts and lifeguard buoy. We have a store in our town centre so it is easy to collect, but they also do deliver with a bulk delivery service. The prices vary from £6 for a picture frame to £35 for a lamp.
Scenery Hire
Tel: 01633 262728 E-mail: [email protected]
They have a wide range of back cloths that we could use for our set such as a pier, living room, many streets, they also offer a service for assembling the set together. They are situated in Newport, but they have a haulage service which delivers to anywhere in the UK. Though there are no prices on the website, so I can’t take this into consideration.
Comparisons: Location - The closest to get to would be B&Q as there is a store 5 minutes away from our college, it also has a delivery service and as the sore is so close, it won’t cost too much to deliver. Next would be Backdrop hire as it is situated in Sheffield but they ave a factory in Chesterfield that we could collect our backdrops from, they too deliver and t wouldn’t cost too much again as it is really close to the delivery address. Scenery Hire is located in Newport, which is 3 and a half hours away, so it is probably too far to travel to collet, they too offer delivery, but it will be more expensive due to the mileage. Selection - I think the widest and most accurate selection of set would be B&Q, as even though they don’t offer the back drops and such, but they do offer materials needed to create our own, such as wood and wallpaper/paint, which would also work out cheaper, and they have most of the set we need for the show such as table and chairs, lamps, frames, etc. I think that Backdrop Hire has the more accurate back drops and are of higher quality, where as Scenery Hire has a wider range, but I don’t think their scenery is as suited to our show. Prices - Comparing prices is difficult as Scenery Hire doesn’t have any prices on their website, so I can’t include them in this comparison, and B&Q and Backdrop Hire offer 2 different things. Overall though, I think that B&Q would be cheaper as we could buy the materials and have a scenic painter to create all of the backdrops for our play, where as with Backdrop Hire, we would have to pay for 5 different back drops. Timing - The set that we would get from Backdrop Hire and Scenery Hire has already been created, so there isn’t a time rush for getting the set ready on time. They do have hiring period though as we will need to send the set back after we have used it so we will only have a short amount of time to deal with assembling and using the set, for Backdrop hire, the longest period is 8 days, Scenery Hire’s website doesn’t mention the hiring period. With B&Q, we would have to make sure we set plenty of time in order to create and then assemble them as part of the set.
I think that the best option for set is to get most of it from B&Q, they have a wide range of set that we need for the show, and they have materials that we need to create our own set, this means that it will have more accuracy if we create our own set too. It is the closest nearby and they also deliver the bigger items so we have no problem with getting the materials. I think that it would also work out the cheapest and there wouldn’t be any consequences if the set was damaged as it would belong to the college.
Lastly, I’m going to be comparing 3 Van Hire companies that we will need to use to transport costume, props and set to and from the theatre venue. We are using the college as a rehearsal space, so we will have everything at the college right before we start doing the tech runs at the theatre, therefore, we will need a van in order to transport all of the stuff. We have people in the company who have a driver’s license so we won’t need a driver, just the transport, and then the rest of the company will be able to unload everything. We will need the van to be a large size as we will be transporting the flats and set.
Van Hire Database
Serpent Motors
Tel: 01246 279 920
Serpent Motors have a selection of vans of different sizes that can be rented for a full day. The largest van which we could use is £60 per day, of which we would need for 2 days, one for taking the stuff there, and one for returning it when the show is finished, the total cost for hiring their van would be £120. The mileage is 200 miles a day free which is more than enough as the venue is under a mile away from the college. They have a refundable deposit of £150 and the store is 1.8 miles away from the college.
Enterprise
Tel: 01246 293344 E-mail: [email protected]
Enterprise has a large selection of vans that we can rent for a selection of time, it can be rented for any number of hours. For a full day, it costs £36.69 for the largest van, which is approximately 11.3 metres cubed, so for 2 days it would cost £73.38, but as we only need it for a number of hours, it is bound to cost less than that. It has unlimited mileage so we don’t have a problem with number of trips to and from, and the deposit is £200. It is 1.2 miles away from the college to pick up the van from Enterprise.
Thrifty
Tel: 01246 389399 E-mail: [email protected]
Thrifty has a selection of vans to choose from of different sizes. The largest van is approximately 15.5 cubic metres and costs £126 per day. For 2 full days, it will cost £252, but the cost lessens a little due to the hours of use, it won’t cost as much if we only use the van for a few hours. There is a charge for missing fuel, so the mileage costs, and it is 2.2 miles away from the college for the collection.
Size - The biggest van is from Thrifty at 15.5 cubic metres, the vans from Serpent motors don’t have any size information but from the appearance, I would imagine that the biggest is a little smaller than the one from Thrifty, and I would say that the largest van from Enterprise is the smallest out of the 3, at 11.3 cubic metres. This is important as we need to make sure that the set is going to fit inside the van. Mileage - Enterprise has unlimited mileage so this won’t cost anything, Serpent motors has 200 miles limit and then a charge is added, but we are very unlikely to use more than 200 miles, Thrifty has a charge of missing fuel so our mileage with this van will cost. Price - The cheapest option from the 3 is Enterprise, the most we will have to pay for a full day is £36.69, and if we have the van for less than 24 hour, it will be cheaper, next is the van from Serpent Motors at £60 for a full day, and then the most expensive is the van from Thrifty at £126 per day. Time - All of the vans are available for a full day or more, but Enterprise and Thrifty are more flexible with times, meaning that we have the option to only have it for a few hours, which will work out cheaper than having it the entire day. Location - They are all in close range of the college, meaning that we can get to the pick up place easily, the closest is Enterprise at only 1.2 miles away, then it is Serpent Motors at 1.8 miles away, and then Thrifty is the furthest away at 2.2 miles away.
Overall, I think our best option would be to hire the van from Enterprise, this is the cheapest option out of them all, there is unlimited mileage, the times are really flexible and it is the closest to the college. We are not sure of the set sizes yet, so it is dependant on if the van will be big enough to fit the set in it, whether or not we will be able to use this service, but I think as it is a large sized van, this is the best choice for van hire.
