Research Update For A Servant Of Two Masters
Servant Of Two Master being an old play in 1753 has more of a basic unrealistic background to the staging of their production. I found that Servant Of Two Masters have a colorful effect to match the costumes of the characters. They like making their set more colorful and eye-catching, this will draw the audience rather than focusing on their staging.
Throughout the years of Servant Of Two Masters their staging has improved because there have been bigger stages built since the play was premiered in 1746 so this mean better lighting and technology. The costumes haven’t changed as it is a commedia dell’arte theatre and they keep their costumes to shoe their class and types of characters.
The Commedia dell’arte play Servant Of Two Masters is based and set in Venice, a little city in North-east Italy. This is what was happening around the time of the play “In Great Britain on July 1, Parliament passes the Jewish Naturalization Act, which ends discrimination against Jews. Widespread opposition will lead to its repeal in 1754” and this who was royalty “George II, who ruled 1727-60, also stayed away from meetings of his ministers. Walpole, who became the first Prime minister of the government, selected his colleagues, and insisted they work with him or leave the cabinet.”

Historical Context – Evaluation
What you did on stage and in rehearsal to update the scene I gave you from ‘A Servant of Two Masters’
During our rehearsal we was given a script from the Servant of Two Masters’ we had to update one of the scenes from it, we had to update it to 2016 and make it more relatable to this century. We decide as a group that Truffaldino was going to be a homeless character; we also put in another homeless character because we didn’t have a lot of characters so we had to be imitative about it. During rehearsal we all decide as a group who we’d all like to play, me and Charley wanted to play the homeless characters. We ran through the performance and something wasn’t right, having two homeless characters. We all wanted to get a good grade on this performance and since it was a week or two before we had to show the performance and get our grade done we all decide as a group that we would work on our breaks and lunch.
Describe the effect you wanted to create.
We wanted to create a piece that was funny. This was because ‘A Servant of Two Masters’ is a funny play; One Man Two Guvnors’ is also really funny play. So the group’s main aim was to make the performance funny, maybe add some slapstick comedy in there too and over exaggerate everything. As a group we was really thinking how can we make it over exaggerated but still in 2016? Then we thought while Charley was the taxi driver she can put on some of the 2016 hits. For example The Vamps which is called I Found a Girl, this played in the taxi and Charley and Lydia both starting to sing along with it and dance around. This made it funny and also brought this century which was a bounce.
Strengths and weakness of the rehearsal/performance work.
One of our weaknesses would be that we left everything rather late, for example we kept changing characters until we were happy with our piece and we was happy with our performance. We should have thought of more ideas and written them down on a spider diagram and choose from there instead of jumping into the performance. One of the groups Strengths was we all got a long really well and we listened to each other’s ideas and tried working with them, no one fell out if we said there idea wouldn’t go. We help each other with their own character. For example, we said to Charley be more tom boy and fun.
How your research informed your workshop and performance idea’s?
Research helped me in many ways; it helped me have a better understanding of the play and a better understanding of the characters, it made understand how the comedy comes in. It made it easier to make the piece modern but funny but also still keeping the concept of the original.
How you would change or improve your idea with more time?
In my opinion I would leave our staging as it was as split, I like our staging but we could have made it better like the staging was quite rushed so I as the receptionist I didn’t have a desk. I also would have put a mouse and keyboard on the desk. I also thought we should have spent time drawing and cutting out a car shape for the taxi. This would have made it more realistic.
We could have made the taxi scene longer, you only see Charley and Lydia in the taxi together you don’t see how Lydia got in. So i would add an extra scene where Lydia is trying to get a taxi and everyone ignores her, and then shows up Charley with her loud music. She stops to pick her up. Lydia stares at Charley, she tells her to “pick up my bags” this will juxtapose from One Man Two Guvnors. They also have a taxi scene, where Melissa helps push the trunk but its too heavy. Charley will try and move the trunk but again its too heavy.
What you would do differently and why?
As I before mentioned about the set and the taxi could have been better. However, I also feel that we could have done anything differently it would be that we need to be more over dramatic, With all of our characters so we really made it look extremely funny instead of some characters being very dramatic and some not so much.
What effect would this have on the performance and audience?
I believe I would have gotten an even better response, more laughter and an all-round funny experience because it would have been more relatable. It would have made our performance stand out a bit more, make the play funny throughout the performance.
Historical Context Performance Workshop
Historical Context Performance Workshop · Initial ideas for set, For the set we had a desk and we made a fake car, we didn't really make it we let everyone imagine it. That was for the Taxi man. · Staging, We will definitely need full use of the the staging for our performance, one half of the staging we used for the taxi and the drunk lady, and the other half of the staging we used for the hotel. We used quite a lot of space for the taxi so it would look more realistic, making the taxi turn around. · Costumes, We had a Homeless drunken girl (Truffaldino - Servant) would be dressed in old baggy clothes, might be a bit ripped. Shoes that have holes in the bottom. Messy hair and quite unhygienic. We had wealthy character(Florindo - Master) would be dresses in a dress, every posh, this will contrast between the homeless woman, it will show how much of a difference money can do. Another character is a Taxi driver (Porter) dressed in normal clothes, like jeans and a nice top, or if it was a girl skirt and nice top. We wouldn't say this character is poor or rich. We added another character in which was an a Receptionist, she will be dressed smartly. Black Pencil skirt with a nice white shirt. I wouldn't say the receptionist is very wealthy but I wouldn't say she's poor. · Characters, Truffaldino. Lizzy's character is Truffaldino, the servant who is looking for a job and is homeless and on the streets. Truffaldino is quite a greedy character but we made a twist on the story we made Lizzy greedy for money and not food. In on part is the scene Lizzy gets asked to move a trunk, she looks at it and sign to Lydia for money by rubbing her fingers together, saying she wants money of her. We ask Lizzy to play Truffaldino as an drunken women. This makes it more realistic as it's more modernize. Florindo – Lydia plays Florindo she is an wealthy woman and quite posh. Lydia puts on a little bit of a posh accent to show her character as wealthy, upper class. She also walks with a strong posture with her back straight and her head held high. She's quite rude to Lizzy. Taxi driver. – Charleys plays the taxi driver in our performance. She makes the character casual, she plays the character very modernized. When she's in the car Charley sings Dr Dre and then Lydia wants it to be turned over so she does. The Vamps come on next. Charley talks quite modern, she uses slang. We added an extra character which was receptionist. I play the receptionist and I play it quite sassy but I still have a high authority character. I do sometimes shows her characters as posh, I am quite stuck up and I look down on Lydia. · Have you found any current news articles or examples from current plays or comedy tv shows or you could highlight anything you have found interesting and might want to include in your piece? No we didn't, our group wanted our piece as original as possible and combine each other’s ideas together. We thought we could creat are own workshop with the ideas we can up with. · IDEAS for movement, dialogue, jokes Lydia is talking to the receptionist (me) and I look down on her, but because she's really tall i stand on a chair and look down at her then. We also when Lydia and Lizzy are bidding with each other me and Charley run up and say "we've got a £7" "anymore wanna go higher" "going once going twice, sold to the post women" we thought this was really funny. Receptionist (me) and Lydia have an argument about the hotel this bring some type of comedy. Because Lydia is quite tall we thought of a good idea of Lydia giving Amber a lift on her reception table so she can be higher to have a go and shout at Lydia. I hold my hand out and she signs and helps me, we go back to arguing after that. · Describe the reasons for each and the effect you want to create on stage. What are you going to keep the same and what are you going to change about the scene? We changed a lot of our workshop around quite a lot during our process of the piece. For example, Charley and me was going to be homeless people, both fighting over the job Lydia was offering. I was drunk so it added comedy to the play and Charley was acting like she was working at the hotel. Lizzy was a taxi driver. Like a week before we had to show the workshop we decided to switch roles around. Another part of the plot we are going to change was the taxi scene. We were going to make Lydia party and l talk posh about the dinner, but we thought this wasn't realistic enough. So we decided to make it so Lydia was in the taxi onto the way to the hotel, like she was a tourist. We was going to keep the modern day music playing in the taxi as a start to our workshop the same during the taxi scene because we thought this was a really good way of showing our performance as modernized. · How will you use this in the extract performance? We are showing this in our workshop by Lydia having a conversation with Charley in the taxi. Throughout the journey Charley puts on the ‘I Found A Girl’ by 5 Seconds Of Summer by singing along to the song and saying how she loves this song. · Ideas for your potential contemporary style of performance material We had the idea of having Amber as the hotel receptionists discriminating against Lizzy as a drunk homeless person and also showing how greedy Lizzy character is this relating back to what I said before. Lizzy takes money of Lydia, gesture towards Lydia each time she asks for help with the trunk.
