Though seeing the look on their faces would be some kind of trophy of it’s own kind,” she responded with a shrug. “Yeah well, we aren’t some fake glory seekers, so you’d better not let any of those through on to the cabinet. Other wise they might as well be shinning out of arses.”

“There would be no shine going on at all, unfortunately,” Lucy put her phone down and studied Felicity. “I know why they picked you but there aren’t any options as good as our year’s.”

She hadn’t been paying full attention, still dealing with the last few boxes her parents had brought to the new flat. A box of hangers lay open on her bed, threading a set of pastel jumpers over them to hang them on a loose rail, a gentle hum of a tune filling the room.

She hadn’t heard the other at the door, and dropped the mug full of pencils she had planned to move to another side.

“Fuck, Oh-oh bugger. Sorry, you made me jump! Next time, maybe say something rather than let me smash the contents of my home, alright?”

The sound of the mug shattering onto the ground made Lucy look up from her book on Latin conjugations and she frowned, eyes studying the shards on the ground before a dismissive shrug lifted her shoulders.

“That mug was ugly anyways. Your voice on the other hand happened to be the prettiest thing I have heard all year. Continue.”

“And then we’d have to take them to the emergency room when they passed out after crying hysterically and annoying the daylights out of us. Truly brilliant,” Lucy replied dismissively. “They think that if they get close to the light, they’ll see their own shine.”

“The Cabinet chose well last year, they will again.” She wasn’t about to be undigified, but the swell of pride she felt in her chest at having the respect of the other girl did cause her to blush. “Anything I can do to help, let me know. After all, it’s you leaving this year. We’ll be the ones stuck with them for a while longer…”

Lucy withdrew her fingertips from the other girl’s arm and tapped them against the flesh of her own. “I will certainly let you know. And you do realize that the Trinity picks our replacements, right?”

“Maybe not this year.” She smirked, reeling off a list of names. “Harden’s second born, Melanie, can’t keep her mouth shut. She snitched on four other girls and got them expelled for much less tan Cabinet worthy scandal. Also remember Josephine from last year? Her younger sister isn’t worth wasting a space on. Family is under investigation for financial fraud, the brother has already dropped out of Trinity for not making his grades. Although there might be one or two hidden gems in the Haberdasher Aske’s Girls this year. From what I remember, they managed to get a teacher fired for not changing their grades without the board suspecting a thing.”

“You’re such a clever little thing,” Lucy finally decided on after storing the information away for a meeting with Lorraine and Selene. She reached out and pressed her fingers against the other girl’s arm. “Thank you. Perhaps with this tidbit of information, we’ll be able to find girls that aren’t total failures at life and in the fashion world.”

“I’m sure you wouldn’t,” Lucy replied dryly, smirking. “Come on then, Ellie. Warn me of those few bad apples that might spoil the bunch. I’d love to be prepared when it becomes time to choose since you won’t be doing so.”
