THIS IS PART 2 OF TO THE MOON AND BACK
MASTERLIST
A/N: Thank you to everyone who comments, votes, and re-blogs! Sorry this took two years lol
“Everett Lynch.” You had seen Rossi go to the basement of the BAU. You followed him to a room in the back. He had a board set up with photos of victims and crime scenes and answered every question you had. “The media has christened him ‘The Chameleon.’ He is a con man and a murderer, who has targeted vulnerable middle-aged women, single mothers. He's cut off their faces and kept them as his trophies. A year ago, we nearly caught him, but his daughter Grace, but she sacrificed herself so that he could get away. He broke Grace out of jail and, again, we almost caught him, if it hadn't been for his daughter. She'd do anything for him. That wouldn't matter because Lynch couldn't bring himself to take Grace with him. Maybe he couldn't bring himself to keep using her the way his mother Roberta had once used him. Everett Lynch remains at large. He is the FBI's most wanted, but there hasn't been any sign of him for a month or so.” Rossi had been hunting this man for months to no avail. Lynch tried to kill him so his frustration was justified.
“He couldn’t have disappeared that easily,” you smirked as you sat down on the table behind you. “Have you looked for any aliases?”
“Yeah, I had Garcia check missing persons reports across the country, but there was nothing,” Rossi let out a long sigh and came to sit next to you. “I don’t want to keep you here for too long kiddo, go home, get some sleep. Tell Krystall I’ll be home soon.”
“Thank you,” you smiled and grabbed your bag from the floor. “I’ll be back in the morning.” The smile on your face stayed there for your entire drive to Rossi’s house. He had graciously offered you a place to stay until you and Reid could figure things out. Unfortunately, Spence still refused to acknowledge your presence. “Hey, buddy,” you hugged your son as you entered Rossi’s living room.
You walked Jason up to the room Rossi gave him and tucked him into bed. Krystall had some things left over from her kids so she gave you those. Jason fell asleep with no fussing. Sometimes you’d watch him sleep, he looked so much like his father when he was sleeping. You made your way back downstairs to talk to Krystall for a little before heading to bed yourself. A good night’s sleep was a rarity for you after Spencer hit you a month ago. You tried to forget about it, but the pain came back every night when you closed your eyes. JJ had noticed this and asked you about it, but you brushed it off.
Your alarm woke you up at 7 the next morning. You made some pancakes for Rossi, Krystall, and Jason before heading to the office. You begrudgingly grabbed the purse in your passenger seat and made your way up to the sixth floor. The chaotic movements of the bullpen brought you back to a sense of calm. You watched as the team individually made their way to the conference room and followed in their footsteps.
“So, Rossi gave me the heads-up, and I was able to find stuff that confirms our very own silver fox's theory that Everett Lynch is on the lookout for his long-lost father,” Garcia started as you sat down. “You see, in all of the cities that Lynch has committed a heinous crime, I have uncovered an alias linked to a wired payment to a P. I. who was retained to conduct searches for men we know were associated in a naked way with Lynch's mother, Roberta.”
“Including Douglas Moore, the man she claims is Lynch's real dad,” Rossi added. “But all these searches are recent, like within the last 8 weeks.”
“Yeah, it looks as though they began a week after we found Grace's body. It's fascinating,” Simmons said as he flipped through the case report. “He might not be a complete sociopath after all.”
You watched as Spencer placed his hand on the table and started to tap his fingers. You knew there was something more on his mind than just this case. “It could also explain his dormancy.”
“Wait a second, Spence,” You placed your file on the table, “you don't think he feels guilty, do you?”
“Not guilt. I think it's more like fear, as if maybe something in the act of taking his child triggered some deeply buried memory of his own father's violence towards himself,” he answered.
“If Lynch never really knew who his father was, or if he had reason to doubt what Roberta told him, then that would motivate him to search for the truth,” Tara added.
“Well, there's only one person we know that knows the whole truth, and that's Roberta, and so she's been manipulating everything in order to get out of jail,” you could tell Rossi was just as stressed as he was last night.
Emily sighed as she entered the conference room, “it worked, at least as far as the Louisiana state parole board goes. I have just been notified that, despite our objections, Roberta is being granted parole, however, her lawyer is telling me he's willing to let us speak with her one last time.”
“Emily, I'd like to talk to Roberta,” Spencer kept his voice calm.
“I would prefer you observe, actually; I'd like to take her out of her comfort zone.” Emily gave him a soft smile. “That means JJ, Tara, you two get to do the honors.”
It wasn’t the same being back, no body treated you the same. They were all walking on eggshells around you. And Spencer. You couldn’t tell who’s side everyone was on. It was all so…blurry. You walked back to your desk and started to work on paper work for an hour, which turned into two hours which turned int… “Confrence room,” Emily’s voice rang through the bullpen. “Garcia found something.”
“Fret not, my intrepid crime fighters,” You could hear Garcia typing on her computer over the phone. “You're no longer flying blind into the silver state. I have matched our mysterious searcher's I. P. address to a business in Reno that touts itself as a ‘private security firm,’ and it's christened Castle Security. Says here the company is owned and operated by Orlando Gaines.”
“What a piece of work,” Matt chuckled.
“He's a former Concord Bay narcotics cop who spent 5 years in prison for selling police-confiscated drugs,” Garcia added.
“It looks like 8 months ago, his company received a wire transfer for $25,000 from an offshore account connected to our old friend, Arthur Terrell,” you furrowed your brow. “Terrell was still alive back then.”
“He was, but that account has since transferred into the hands of an Edward Myles, and Mr. Myles is turning out to be very elusive,” Garcia continued. “Yeah, 'cause although that could be a very likely alias for Mr. Lynch, that name isn't popping up anywhere in Reno.”
“JJ, Luke, Matt, check in with Reno PD, also our FBI field office,” Emily ordered. “Dave and Spence, see if you can get a sit-down with Orlando Gaines. Garcia, work on finding Lynch’s victim.” You sat in silence as she hung up the phone. “Y/N, go help Garcia sort through anything she finds.”
“You found a missing persons report?” You asked as you entered Garcia’s office.
“Coming across the wire now,” Garcia was staring intently at her computer. “Ok, Marilyn Irwin, 45 years old. Cocktail waitress at the Tangiers in Reno. She has a 15-year-old daughter, Olivia. Two days ago, Marilyn gets in this fight with her live-in abusive boyfriend, then she calls her mom, and then she tells her mom she's moving out and she's moving in with a guy named, wait for it, Edward Myles, aka Everett Lynch.”
“So Everett Lynch is no longer dormant and he's escalating,” you let out a long sigh and brought your hand out waiting for Garcia’s paper.
“Letter copy,” she handed you the paper while never taking her eyes off the computer.
You rushed the paper back to Emily and Tara in the conference room. The whole situation was one of the weirdest, everything seemed too easy. They found his hideout and had a SWAT team within the hour. You listened to the phone JJ had in her pocket as they prepared to storm the house. Just as they began their invasion, you heard your worst nightmare. JJ’s scream was followed by an explosion. The line went dead.
“What the hell just happened?” you could feel your voice shake.
Emily sprang from her seat and ran to her office. She stayed there for an hour.
You paced, and paced, and paced. Tara had tried to calm your nerves to no avail.
Emily eventually returned, “everyone’s safe and on their way home. We did however lose 6 agents in the explosion.” With the news she turned and left the room once more.
You sighed and collapsed into the chair next to you. Finally their nightmares were over and things could return to normal. Almost.
“Emily told me what you guys were getting into, and I figured you could use these. Thank god. “Get this caffeine into my face hole. This is from Lunacorn. Luke Alvez, stop making me like you,” Garcia said through a tight smile.
“Ha!” Luke smirked. “Never.”
Matt and Rossi walked in at the same time, “vision boarding went well?” Matt asked.
“Oh, you have no idea how many stickers were used,” you smiled as you grabbed a coffee from the table. You didn’t stay as late as the others but you were still tired enough to need it.
“Where's Reid?” Rossi asked as he sat down. I wish I knew. “I want to talk to the whole team.” He and Krystal seemed to be talking about something as you left that morning but you couldn’t hear what.
“Oh, Spence probably slept in.” JJ brushed off Rossi’s question. “He took it really hard.” Their relationship would sometimes bother you but you knew Spence wouldn’t be as happy as he is without her.
“Well, let's start our after-action review now, and we'll fill him in when he arrives,” Emily shuffled the papers in front of her and turned toward Garcia.
She started typing away at the computer in front of her, “ok, DNA results coming at ya.”
“Casualty count still hold at 8, including Roberta and Everett Lynch?” Luke stared at Garcia while the team held their breath.
“Yes,” The light on Garcia’s face faded into her furrowed brow. “Wait, no.”
The team sat in silence, “Garcia?” you asked, breaking the less than welcomed quiet.
“Yes, 8 casualties” Garcia’s eyes widened at her computer screen. Never had you seen her with such a sorrowful look on her face. “Our 6 agents, Roberta Lynch, and Orlando Gaines, the private investigator. That's it.”
“Wait a minute, that means...” Tara had a confused look on her face as she looked between the agents around her.
You listened in shock as Emily interrupted her, “that Everett Lynch is still alive.”
“Reno PD just confirmed they found supplies under Lynch's hideout,” Garcia let out an exasperated sigh and continued typing on the computer.
“So he must have built an escape to the tunnels under the house,” JJ groaned into her coffee.
“This guy's a planner,” Rossi explained. “He picked that target because it gave him an escape route.”
“We profiled Roberta would take them both out, but because of her love for her son, she hesitated,” you added. “And that hesitation gave Lynch the seconds he needed to execute his plan.”
Matt was sitting still and had a very stoic look on his face, “all right, so he escapes right before the explosion.”
“We gotta get back to Reno before someone else gets hurt,” Emily closed the file in front of her and stood from her seat. “Garcia, run a search on Lynch aliases, any credit card activity.”
Garcia, quick as a bunny, pulled up the information on her laptop, “he's radio silent for now.”
“It's only a matter of time before this guy gets desperate enough to use one of his old aliases, and when he does, we've got him cornered,” Luke sighed into his coffee.
“Stop. Stop, stop,” you could hear the disdain in Rossi’s voice as he addressed the group. “Apply what we know based on our experience with Lynch and others like him. That's all profiling is, that's all it ever was. Now, you're Lynch. You have the full force of United States law enforcement on your heels. Where else do you go? Who else do you hurt?”
The realization hit you like a truck, “us. They come after us.” Though the thought scared you, you didn’t know Lynch and Lynch didn’t know you. He knew nothing that could give him leverage over you. Everyone and everything you loved was safe. “He'll get off on the power of attacking on our home turf.”
“We need security for our loved ones,” Rossi rushed to his feet and stared Emily down.
Emily rustled through the papers in front of her, “Alvez, Simmons, contact troopers at all state lines. I'll notify the director that the Lynch case remains open. Y/N, Garcia, check in on Reid. Fill him in on his way back here.”
You and Garcia left the conference room and grabbed your keys before making your way to the elevator and, eventually, the main lobby. The car ride was quiet, calm. But you didn’t need calm right now, you needed Spencer.
“Did you know he hasn’t spoken to me in a month?” you said to Garcia, cutting the silence. You couldn’t help it as your voice broke. “He hasn’t looked at me in two weeks.”
You could almost hear Garcia’s heart break as you finally admitted that the love of your life didn’t know how to love you anymore. Finally, you pulled into the parking lot of his building and made your way to his apartment. The route was familiar, second floor, 3rd door. You tried to turn the door knob but it wouldn’t budge. Knocking and calling his name didn’t work, so you resorted to your last option. Garcia watched as you rumaged through your bag and eventually produced a silver key.
“Spence!” you cried as the door opened. The love of your life, whether he wanted to admit it or not, was lying motionless on the floor. All the memories of your years together came flooding back at once. “Spence, it's Y/N. Can you hear me?”
Garcia pulled out her cell phone and dialed what you assumed was 911, “we need an ambulance immediately at 937 Hoover Street, apartment 23. We have an agent down.”
You placed your ear to his chest and listened for his heartbeat. it was faint but, it was there“He's breathing.”
“Yes, we have an agent down,” Garcia frantically yelled into the phone.
“No, no, no, no,” you gasped as he started having a seizure.
It took everything in you to not breakdown in the hallway. And on the car ride. And while running through the hallways of the hospital.
“It's Dr. K. Can you hear me, sir?” A doctor quickly rushed to his side. “How long has he been unconscious?”
“I don't know,” you stuttered as you spoke. “There was an explosion 24 hours ago.”
“So he's been under a lot of stress?” she asked while putting on a pair of gloves
“Yes, he's an FBI agent,” you snapped back.
“I need to run some tests,” Dr. K took a flashlight from her pocket and shined it in his eyes. “Are you family?”
“Uh, technically,” you stuttered as you questioned the status of your once perfect marriage. “But, you should speak to his mom”
“Get him to CCU,” all the noise was enough to shake you to your core as the doctor shouted orders and the nurses scrambled to his side.
You put a hand on his shoulder, “wake up,” you said as you held back tears.
“I need to talk to his mother right away,” the doctor’s tone reflected the situation perfectly.
“I'll track down Diana,” Garcia muttered as she pulled out her phone.
“She's at Brookfield.” You stopped dead in your tracks and looked at the message that just appeared on your screen, “it's Emily.”
“Go,” Garcia urged, following after Reid and the doctors.
“No, no, no,” you protested. “I'm not leaving.”
“Spence will understand. The team needs you,” you as Garcia disappeared around a corner. “I've got this. Go.”
Before you knew it your feet were taking you to your car. You jumped in and hit the gas headed for Quantico. Emily was there, ready to meet you. “What’s going on?” you asked.
“We’re going to catch Lynch,” She explained as she handed you a bulletproof vest. She continued her explanation of the plan as she drove like hell to get you all to the airfield.
When you arrived you watched as Lynch got out of the car he was following you with. Immediately, your coworkers drew their weapons and aimed them at the son of a bitch.
“No, no, no, no,” Lynch argued. “Nope, nope, nope.” You watched as he grabbed Krystall into a chokehold and held a gun to her head.
“No. Put them away,” Emily ordered.
You watched as Rossi quickly comforted his beloved wife, “you ok?”
“He didn't hurt me,” she reassured.
“Lynch, we need more time,” Emily tried to buy some time. “Our pilots refuse to leave U. S. airspace.”
“You didn't profile that about me?” he smirked. “You see, the wealthy ladies that I seduce, they are suckers for a real-life pilot. So you got the keys? You fueled up, ready to go?” It seemed as though he found this whole situation…humorous.
“One condition,” Rossi took a step closer. “Take me. She's got nothing to do with this.”
“I need a hostage, Dave, not a martyr,” Lynch started to haul Krystall toward the jet behind them.
“No!” Rossi shouted. “You put me on that plane with you with you and nobody's gonna shoot you out of the sky,” With his years of experience Rossi knew exactly how this would go down. “They'll let you land, you'll disappear, and you'll never hear from me again.”
“How do you know you'd live to tell about it?” Lynch hissed.
Rossi sighed, and took another step closer, “I'm willing to take that risk”.
“Yeah? All right, let's go. Pat your husband down for me, will you, doll?” Krystall visibly flinched as he hissed directions at her. “And lose the vest. Let's go. We're wasting time.”
“My gun's in the car,” you watched as Krystall pat Rossi down.
You watch as the psychotic man comes and handcuffs Rossi, “this can't be how it ends.” Everything they’d fought for and everything they’d ever lost culminated in the rage inside your chest.
“I love you,” Rossi’s reassuring tone made you think for one second that everything was going to be alright.
“I love you,” Krystall responded. You could hear her voice crack.
“All right, put these on, old man,” Lynch ordered. “Come on.”
“I love you,” Rossi managed to mutter one last time before the doors closed on him.
“There's no shot,” Matt shouted back as he ran toward the jet.
“Lynch won't give us a line of sight,” JJ lowered her gun to the ground.
“Prentiss, come on, you said we needed a great plan,” You could feel the tensions rising.
“And we have one,” Prentiss explained. “It started 20 years ago when David Rossi and Jason Gideon submitted their first requisition for a private jet. There are things none of you know about that jet.”
You could see the worry on everyone’s face as their jet started to rev to life.
“Thank goodness,” You sighed as the man stumbled his way toward the SUVs “Rossi. Rossi, come on.” You ran as fast as you could and ushered him away before the jet took off down the runway.
“Fire at the fuel tank,” JJ shouted as she ran back to the car. “Get back! Take cover.” She quickly sent a flare straight toward the trail of fuel. The fireball that was once your precious jet was almost beautiful.
