Hi! My name is Lucy, and I’m a 20-something ex-fandom blogger.
This page used to be my absolute safe & happy place, where I could simultaneously be myself and engage in what I was passionate about, post my creations, make friends, but also maintain privacy and log off when I needed it.
But, now that I’ve grown up a little, I’ve also realized how toxic some cultures were, how communities I was a part of hypersexualized LGBTQ+ and RP relationships, how harassment was sometimes just an accepted part of being a user here, and how we didn’t have a ton of accountability for ourselves, each other, and even the people we obsessed over.
I’d love if you’d engage with this post if you find yourself (especially after quarantine) going back to the fan-themed things that made you happy earlier in life- fanfiction, fandom blogging, creating art / other fanworks, etc.
I’ve definitely noticed myself going way above and beyond than I have with fandom interactions since before university, and I’m so interested to know if others are doing the same, how you’re engaging as an older fan a few years outside of Tumblr’s prime (oof), and how you feel as though involvement in platforms like this one affected you while you were growing up. If you’re comfortable sharing anything, whatever reflections you have, I’d love to hear it :)
(- xoxo irrelevant old person that’s lately only happy reading ao3 for some reason and wants to know if others are like this too???)
