Wahhh a long overdue essay on The Stranger and LimCom
“The Stranger” was written in 1942 by French philosopher Albert Camus. It’s protagonist has the same namesake as a character from the 2023 game Limbus Company, Meursault. As Limbus Company’s chapters called Cantos often reflect the stories that the characters originate from, I will share how Meursault from Limbus Company reflects his character in “The Stranger” and my speculation for how his Canto will play out. I personally enjoyed “The Stranger” as the way that it’s told from Meursault’s sole perspective and what the second part does for the story, and I feel that will be an important thing to look at for Canto 10.
To start, both Meursaults are incredibly apathetic. Neither of them talk much, and both are very observant. In the game, Meursault both notes Sinclair’s mounting panic attack and Aeung-Du taking Bamboo-Hatted Kim behind the couch. However, he opts not to talk about what he notes as he doesn’t feel it’s “important enough” to tell Dante or anyone else about. Similarly, in “The Stranger”, Meursault notes many things but doesn’t mention them because he doesn’t believe they’re important. However, unlike Meursault in Limbus Company, our “Stranger” Meursault withholds information when he’s told to, by his friend Raymond. Our Sinner Meursault, as was previously established, simply doesn’t when he doesn’t feel it’s important. They are also both very blunt, with Sinner Meursault explicily tells off Don Quixote for how her food was inedible. Our “Stranger” Meursault bluntly tells Marie how he truly feels about her, which is true apathy, saying she could be anyone and like her no matter who she was. In terms of their similarities, at this moment, these are the only two similarities that they have. Now, I will talk about their differences.
As for their differences, there are many. Meursault doesn’t talk much in “The Stranger”, he more just lets things happen around him. As opposed to our Sinner Meursault who talks more, even without being prompted necessarily. Another difference is their intro lines, as has been noted before by other people. The difference between “Today Mother died. Or maybe it was yesterday” and “Today I killed Mother. Or maybe it was yesterday” is very great. In “The Stranger”, Meursault’s mom wasn’t murdered in the first place, merely died of old age, however, with the way people act in the second part of the book, you would certainly believe it was his actions that caused his mother’s death. Which causes me to now talk about my idea about how our Sinner Meursault got to our Company and my ideas about Canto 10.
As has been shown numerous times throughout Limbus Company, Project Moon takes the stories they draw inspiration from very loosely and adds a lot of their flair to it, even casting aside the main points of the stories entirely, but still keeping the most major point of each story. The grotesqueness of Gregor Samsa, the punishment of Rodion, the growing up of Sinclair, the obsession of Ishmael, the revenge of Heathcliff, the insanity of Don Quixote, and the loss of innocence of Jia Baoyu. As for the major point of “The Stranger” that is certainly, the judgement of Meursault.
Throughout the story, various people judge him. The funeral director at the home judges him for how he acts during his mother’s funeral. Marie judges him for his friendship with Raymond and in a way, how he feels about Marie. And of course, he is judged whilst on trial for his shooting of the “unnamed Arab man”. He is even further judged after his conviction by both the chaplin who comes see him, and by a vision of his mother, before even being judged by hismelf. His judgement ends as such, “To be executed while greeting the cries of hatred by those who are watching it”. I believe that the main theme of Canto 10 will be focused around the judgement of Meursault as they (likely) head into N. Corp. I believe everything that happened within “The Stranger” (or something similar) happened pre-main story, and I have heard various theories that Meursault has previously distorted, however, I don’t personally believe he’s distorted, I believe he takes on his emotionlessness, because he’s simply like that, similar to how Meursault from “The Stranger” is like that.
I’m very interested to see how Project Moon will adapt “The Stranger” for Canto 10. This is the only story I’ve read that is in Limbus Company. I have a digital version of Crime and Punishment, in my college town, there’s a copy of Demian at the city library, and I have found the Metamorphosis as well as an online copy of Hell Screen (which I do want to read).
