Monster Gallery and LUDO Gallery present Pull/Press/Print, an exhibition celebrating modern, fine art printmakers opening 4th December, closing 20th December 2015.

The title Pull/Press/Print refers to the raw, primary motions of printmaking, and unites a mix of emerging and veteran artists with a spectrum of styles and techniques through preferred printmaking experiences. The exhibition explores the versatility of printmaking methods from woodcut to silk-screen printing, resulting in a unique exhibition that goes well beyond ink on paper.

LUDO Gallery (Singapore), in collaboration with Vin Gallery (Vietnam), is proud to present Liu & Lugis: Hallway, a show comprised of two exceptional Asian fine art printmakers, Leo Liu Xuan Qi from China, and Muhd Muhlis Lugis from Indonesia. The primarily monochrome exhibition curated by Brenda Dwyer & Shyevin Sng from respective galleries features several large-scale contemporary relief prints created with traditional printmaking techniques. Liu & Lugis' style and work contrast and make a powerful statement of the diversity of printmaking. Lugis' illustrative imagery is stark and constructed, employing the use of woodcut on canvas to reflect and critique the vagaries and social issues of society today in contrast to the call for morality in traditional Indonesian culture. The primary figures of his work are formed by a collection of limbs, grasping and reaching for desires and virtues that Lugis feels is lacking in secular modernity. In contrast, Liu's work, diverging from his recent pop-art work, harkens to his Western influenced design background and Chinese heritage. The work emerges as ambiguous, succinct shapes, within which are organic swirls and textures created by ink rubbing. The overarching theme is creation, and the pieces invite further interpretation from audiences of all cultures. Liu & Lugis: Hallway is an exclusive exhibition running for a limited time period, from 23rd to 29th November 2015, at LUDO Gallery.

Balik Rumah - Let's Head Home: 23rd October - 15th November Australian-Peranakan artist Jennifer Lim will be debuting her first solo show, Balik Rumah at LUDO Gallery this October. Named 'Let's Head Home' in Malay, this exhibition is influenced by Jennifer's cross-cultural experiences and the notion of home, and features a stunning installation of nearly 600 miniature handmade prints, spelling out the title of the show. Using the highly technical craft of Japanese woodblock combined with screen printing, linocut and painting, Jennifer produces a visual exploration of history and heritage.

"Our link to the past is so fragile - recording one's family history is a gift for the next generation."

LUDO Gallery is showing Print Edition’s stunning SUPERVENE: a collection of silk screen prints from select Australian artists - graphic designers, illustrators, street artists - displaying unique reinterpretations of favourite superheroes and villains.

For the SUPERVENE SINGAPORE, we are fortunate to be able to showcase the hardcopy. With free reign over a wide and rich pop cultural history, the capes represented come from comics and film, from the famous to the obscure. The featured figures have been explored with an individualistic take, displaying the admiration of the source and artistry of each creator.

For the SUPERVENE EXHIBITION, the artists have used Screen Printing to execute their work. Many of the artists have their own websites and are on Facebook, and we hope that you will take some time to view their work online.

SINGAPORE: HERO + VILLAIN Singapore also has a strong community of Western comic enthusiasts and collectors. For many, the now-defunct Comics Mart in Serene Centre that opened in mid-1980s stoked the flames of fandom. LUDO Gallery will now showcase as a reminder to the existing audience and an opportunity for the next generation of enthusiasts to experience and examine the art of screen printing stabilising our fascination with Superheros and Villains.

At the present time, the local comic convention, STGCC, has been recognised as one of the major Western comics-centric conventions in South East Asia. Superheroes are currently at the forefront of popular culture thanks to film and television adaptations.

Print Edition's intimate collaboration with artists and the resultant silk screened posters are an authentic reflection of comics' place in society and art, and seemed natural for LUDO Gallery to welcome the Supervene exhibition to Singapore’s shores.

This Friday 6pm: Guest Exhibiton - Cinzia Salati’s SWEET & SOUR

LUDO Gallery by B6T9 Design Pte Ltd is a fine art print gallery, but has granted guest artists of various techniques the space to show contemporary, current work. Our upcoming guest exhibition, Cinzia Salati's SWEET & SOUR is opening 6pm on 5th June (Fri), running to 8th June (Mon) only. Although Salati, an Italian artist, has travelled extensively and will continue to do so, works showcased at the SWEET & SOUR exhibition have evolved during her time in Singapore. Salati has a Fine Art diploma with specialisation in textile design and execution, and enjoys exploring the use of different materials – stone, wood, paper and wires on top of the typical canvas base. What truly excites her is the aesthetic combination of various material and the different visual perceptions that can be formed from a myriad of techniques. Salati loves to recycle material that we often discard or take for granted in our modern world: Icons Pollution.

In contrast, the audience will also be presented with beautifully crafted moulded figures emerging from delineated spaces, quietly asking the audience to register the qualities of peace and strength in one place: The Balloon Seller.

Suggested in the name of the exhibition itself, SWEET + SOUR, the audience will be presented with handmade craft that questions recycling and recovery juxtaposed against beautifully crafted figures emerging from delineated spaces quietly asking the audience to register the qualities of peace and strength in one place, The Balloon Seller.

LUDO Gallery Artists: Jennifer Orchard

Round Horn (2015) and Square Horn (2015) Limited Edition Intaglio Print with Aquatint and Paper craft.  “As this is the year of the ram and horns the theme of LUDO Gallery's Cernunnos exhibition, I began the project of creating two works for the show by researching horns online - and there are some amazing ones out there! In order to really see something I zoom in to take in everything about the object especially, pattern, texture and color. In the absence of any actual horns to study I turned to a reference book of sea shells. All these images and ideas then get filed away and the most outstanding ones get saved to memory. I then begin to make rough sketches for the basic layout of the images. For 'Square Horn' I wanted to show two horns as if they were mounted for display. For 'Round Horn' I wanted to show the horn as if you were looking at it still attached to the goat. When I'm happy with the rough sketches I sit down at my drafting table to draw each image to scale. When these images are done I then draw the pattern of the lines to cut and fold. Then it's a quick trip to the copycenter to get a few copies of each image made. Back at the studio, I practice cutting and folding until everything works. If it doesn't work well (or at all) I redraw whatever needs to be fixed. Three prints make up the finished piece. The bottom and middle prints were printed from the same plate in different colors. This plate was made using the etching and aquatint techniques. The top print was printed from a second plate using the blind emboss technique (no ink). This plate was made using the etching and open bite techniques. When finally happy (or out of time) I layer the top and middle prints - prepared previously, attach a copy of the image on top and start to carefully cut. After all the cuts are made I then wet the fold lines and fold back those pieces to form the image. This then gets attached to the bottom print to form the finished piece.”

Jennifer Orchard is an American artist currently based in Singapore. Out of the many different techniques used in intaglio printmaking, she most frequently employs etching for lines and aquatint for tone. Jennifer is most at peace in nature, and is continually fascinated by the sight of things growing: how leaves and flowers develop from seemingly nothing into something beautiful over time. Her current body of work includes prints of imaginary patterns found in nature, layered, cut and folded to create abstracted images of things found in a garden.
