The Minneapolis Institute of Art holds one of the top collections of Chinese bronzes in the nation, dating from the Shang dynasty (2000 BCE). The aim of this research project of about 200 bronzes in the collection, is to learn more about the bronzes through various techniques such as ink rubbings, line drawing, CT scanning and 360-degree imagery.

ink rubbing scarification piece by Yann Brënyàk

The Wu Dacheng Jijintu Scroll is a handscroll of rubbings taken from twenty-one bronzes that were once in the collection of the 19th century collector Wu Dacheng (1835-1902). He made five scrolls of rubbings taken from his bronze collection; prior to the introduction of western photography, the rubbing technique was one of the best ways to record an object. The Ji Zu Yi Zun, a bronze ritual wine vessel from the Shang Dynasty was also once in the collection of Wu Dacheng.
