“Angels & Demons” by Luna Gilpin. 2020.
Project 4 Proposal
For Project 4, I’m thinking of doing a split screen piece that tells the story of an angel who falls from heaven by the hands of a demon. The story will start by depicting the tasks and daily life of the angel, from writing scripts to praying to reading the Holy Bible. From there, we see a demon interjecting in the angel’s life, trying to get her to stray from her holy ways. She rejects the demon to begin with but soon we see a drastic shift in sound and pace and suddenly the angel has given in. We see her appearance shift drastically, as do her habits. The split screen is meant to emulate the devil on the angel’s shoulder, telling her what to do.
This week, I’ve already begun collecting and filming clips for the angel’s scenes and next week I plan to fulfill the clips needed of the demon and of the angel’s transformation. The next few weeks will be dedicated to editing and refining the work!
Project 3 Comments
Fatimah: Your piece was full of very organic sounds that all flowed together so seamlessly that it could’ve been just one long recording! It was very atmospheric and I felt I could be in the kitchen right next to you as you cooked. The overall tone was very laid back and brought me comfort. The sounds felt familiar and I could recognize them as being things like a knife chopping, etc. I envisioned a very warm environment while listening to your audio and felt very calm.
Elaf: Your piece was very dynamic. I like how you interwove different bits and pieces of sounds to create a piece that flows and ebbs. It kept me wanting to hear more. If possible, you should put it on your blog so I can relisten to it!
Marwa: I liked your piece because I felt like it really told the audience a story and allowed it to unfold throughout the audio. At first we hear the car noises and I was worried there might be a car crash or something because the car itself was so loud. It is interesting that instead we were transported to the cinema, which the audience was clued into by use of the 20th century Fox soundtrack. I like how familiar all the sounds are and how you used spoken soundtracks from movies as well as sounds and music.
Bree: I couldn’t hear your piece the first time when we listened to it, so after relistening to it on your blog, I thought it was very interesting how the music so suddenly faded into this very jarring static sound. I’d be interested to know what that sound was because it was very unfamiliar and sounded like many different sounds overlaid to create a chaotic and striking static sound.
Gabrielle: I loved how atmospheric your piece was. It felt very haunting with the woman crying and then later the sounds of what sounded to me like chains rattling. I was envisioning a ghostly apparition of some sorts crying and dragging her chains on the floor like the ghost of Marley from a Christmas Carol. The sounds were all very familiar but they felt like they were of an older era, like the old telephone and the sewing machine sounds, which also added to this haunted effect. I really enjoyed your piece!
Charli: Charli, your piece was so interesting. I really liked that instead of using a typical rising action, conflict, resolution setup, you chose to make the audio very intense from the beginning and then allowed a lull before it picked up again. The entire time I felt like I was running from something bad. I felt overall anxiety during the piece and was really struck by how jarring some of the sounds were. I loved the overall nightmarish, anxiety-inducing tone. I also liked what the professor said about your audio being Campy in a way because it relies on familiar horror-themed audio at times. I like this observation and think it adds to the overall experience of the piece.
Lina: I’m glad you raised the audio on your piece because I think it was very good and deserves to be heard. The overall tone felt very mellow and relaxed with the gentle rain and the soft cat purrs, etc. I felt like I was sitting in a cottage rocking chair listening to this all play out. Your piece reminds me of those videos on YouTube of gentle ambience that are often used as background noise for activities like studying. I really liked it!

Project 2 Comments
Elaf: After viewing the pictures of your yard on your blog, I was even more immersed in your audio. Even without them though, you did a great job of making an interactive piece that was exciting and very descriptive. I really enjoyed that you interacted with other people in your audio, capturing their voices as sounds. I also thought it was fun how your voice changed when you called to your dog! Overall a very lovely piece and very immersive.
Fatimah: Your audio recording had me listening on the edge of my seat the whole time. It felt like you were not reminiscing like many of us, but rather documenting an experience. You seemed like a vlogger in that you were able to take us with you on your journey. I liked that you talked about how you prepared for the trip, like bringing your mask and sanitizer. This was no easy feat, but you pulled it off very well and I’m glad we could accompany you on your journey this way.
Marwa: I loved that in your audio, you didn’t even have to disclose where you were recording, the audience could just tell by the sounds all around and the descriptions you gave of the children and the ice cream truck, etc. that you were at a park. You captured lots of different interesting sounds and I really liked that you incorporated your personal experience with your son and husband.
Bree: Your audio was short but sweet! It was very descriptive and reminiscent of the sort of solitude that has come along with the pandemic. I feel like I got a clear visual image of the pavement exactly as you were describing it and your voice was very mellow and calm.
Gabrielle: I loved how upbeat and exciting your audio recording was! It made me feel like I was really at the mall with a friend, getting excited over anime and Cinnabon. I also loved listening to you talk about how the mall had changed over time as different shops moved in and out. We also got a sense of your own tastes and interests in the mall, making this a very cool personal piece.
Charli: I loved the nature sounds in your audio. Your piece reminded me heavily of mine in a lot of ways, which I found very cool! I enjoyed the different sounds captured (even the wind!) and how you maintained a calm and laid back tone of voice throughout the recording. It was very descriptive and I could visualize exactly what you were saying in my head.
Lina: Your piece was very calm and laid back. I liked how mellow it was. I also loved how you ended it, asking how long it would take to walk across the city. It left the audience with something to linger on, even after the audio itself had ended and I think this was a very strong piece because of it! I felt the same sense of comfort and warmth from the rainy street that you were describing. Overall, super nice job!
Project 2 Comments:
Gabrielle: You could go in so many interesting directions with this! There’s no shortage of cool things to talk about in a mall. Will you go when it is busy or when it is relatively slow? Depending on what you decide it could greatly impact the audio!
Elaf: from what you said in our meeting, your backyard has a pool and lots of amazing things to talk about! I’m sure you will come up with some very interesting things to discuss and I’m very interested in getting a feel for what your yard looks like! Great idea!
Fatimah: Your airport idea is very creative and different and I can’t wait to see how it comes together. It would be interesting to compare and contrast the different airports in Amsterdam, Detroit, etc. It must be such a strange experience to go through the airport during this pandemic! Good luck and be safe!
Charli: You are a very energetic person so I can’t wait to see how your audio comes together, out in your backyard! I know you’ll come up with some interesting things to talk about! Don’t be too hard on yourself, and just stick with your gut! It’ll turn out great.
Skating Through Ponds and Prairies (2020)
For Project 2, we are required to create an audio tour of somewhere of our choosing. I immediately knew I wanted to document a skateboarding trip through some of my favorite outdoor trails near my house. These trails are a part of the land owned by my old middle school, so they bring back a lot of memories for me and I have watched them grow and change over many years. I think skating would create an interesting sound and allow me to cover more ground faster. I particularly want to focus on one area of the trails near a little floating dock over a pond, because my favorite hill for skating is right here and I feel there is a lot to talk about in this area! I’m quite excited to start this project and reminisce about my childhood in this nature wonderland.
Thus far, I have entirely completed the editing process for my interpretation of the Korra meets Uncle Iroh scene. I intend to go back in and smooth out the final cut as well as tighten up some of the scenes, however I am very proud of myself for being nearly complete! I don’t plan on adding any effects to the piece as it is meant to be a simple, somewhat raw interpretation of the originally proposed scene.
our next project features a reinterpretation of a movie scene! I chose to reinterpret the scene from The Legend of Korra in which Korra meets Uncle Iroh. here are my notes thus far!
Here are a conglomeration of screenshots for my final Imaginary Object design in SketchUp! I decided to use stone and tile textures with black trim and deep turquoise paint to create a futuristic-looking gadget that transcends our current technological comprehension. I was able to experiment with new shapes and textures and extend my knowledge of the software further via this project!
For Moodle Assignment #9, I decided to use SketchUp to create a camera. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to upload or import my own textures as that is a paid feature of SketchUp and due to the current COVID Pandemic, I do not have the funds to upgrade my account. I used the colors provided to the best of my abilities to give the digital camera a sleek look.
Here is my first architectural design using SketchUp. I wasn’t sure how to get more color samples than the ones provided, so I stuck to the given ones. Beyond this however, I find the program to be very easy to use and quite powerful in its abilities! I’ve used simple shapes and angles on this first design, since I’m still learning the program.

Mount Olympus Lasercut
My inspiration for this project came from wandering around the internet, searching for great castles and palaces. I’d really love to design a shadow box that takes the lovely photographic images of these architectural feats and gives them a three-dimensional component. Further, I decided my piece would be more interesting and alluring if it had some sort of significance to the viewer, so I’ve chosen to represent the mythological Greek palace of the Gods, Mount Olympus. Above is the image which first sparked my interest.
Unfortunately, my sketches appear only vaguely coherent, but typically I find that I prefer to work off of a simple outline rather than a detailed rough draft because it gives me more flexibility. I plan to have 6 layers of plywood, laser-cut to appear as if the facade of some Greek ruins partially stand in front of a set of floating stairs which stretch far behind to a multi-layered castle atop a steep cliff. The back piece will be etched with designs meant to signify the sky.
I’ve made some progress in Illustrator already. Currently I’ve drawn out the ruins along with some foliage and I’ve begun the floating staircase.
Concept Proposal 2
Including a structured timeline and a materials list that I plan to use to meet this week’s goal.
I’ve decided to map out the needed neopixels after I have the dimensions and shape of the basic skirt to get a more accurate idea of how many I want to use.
The circuit will be attached to the top of the foot so that it is concealed but gives the user free mobility still. When still, the neopixels all glow white but upon walking / up and down movement, they will twinkle and flicker different shades of blues and purples. Finally, when tilted to the side, the circuit board will light up only certain neopixels, creating the outlines of constellations across the piece.
CONCEPTUAL PROPOSAL
Once again, I’ve chosen to present my Conceptual Project Proposal in the form of a two-page journal spread as I find it to be cohesive and visually compelling.
Essentially, my project is inspired by the acclaimed, prestigious world of high fashion, specifically the extravagant runway looks presented forth by corporations such as Elie Saab, Dior or Vogue. However, my piece will further implement technological elements to the design of an elegant skirt. The piece will have the ability to light up on command, highlighting real constellations dotted across the skirt using tiny neopixels hidden throughout. Further, upon motion detectors (attached to the top of the foot!) sensing specific motions, the skirt’s lights will change, light up and twinkle.
I’m very excited to begin piecing together my jumble of inspirations and ideas into a concrete work of art!
