"From a patient too weak to fight. Thank you." - a message left by an anonymous donor on Luigi Mangione's legal fund.
In one of his letters, Luigi Mangione described himself as "a bit of a "quote collector"". On his legal fund, many people chose to share their favorite quotes in their donation messages. The second most frequent quote is a variation of a Chinese saying: "A person who brings firewood for others should not be left to perish in the cold."
Different variations of this phrase appeared in over 20 donations. Totaling over $900. Here are a couple more:
"My dad couldn't even spend enough time with [my mom] in the end, because he had to continue working to keep her insured. Still, they lost their entire life savings." - from a message left on Luigi Mangione's fund.
A rarely talked about issue with insurance: sacrifices people make to stay insured and how having insurance doesn't actually ensure anything. Both insured and uninsured may lose everything.
"I will die but you put a smile on my face. You're on my side and I am forever grateful." - a donation message from Luigi Mangione's legal fund.
"Happy Birthday, Luigi Mangione"
Luigi's fund reached its goal with people from over 70 countries coming together to raise $1,500,000! In just the last 24hrs the fund received 130+ donations worth over $37,000 as supporters keep donating to celebrate his 28th birthday.
"Your Gilman friends were there. They support you and want the best for you." Shout out to Debbie T for telling everyone about this. Debbie is the second highest donor on Luigi Mangione's legal fund (not counting anonymous donations) - who, as of today, has donated $24,500 in the last 9 months!
Over 30,000 donation messages have now been left on Luigi’s fund - 350,000+ words in total! It would take 25–40 hours to read through all of them. Here are a few messages from some of the most frequent non-anonymous contributors who've kept conversations going for well over a year!
Fun Facts:
About 3/4 of the donors choose to leave a message.
A little over half of donors choose to donate anonymously, without giving their name or alias.
Names of the most frequent non-anon contributors are actually variations of "Free Luigi" and "Jury Nullification" (around 1k donations in total), but that's because many people use these two phrases as their names, making their donations impossible to tell apart. 🥲
With thousands of donations pouring in, Luigi Mangione's legal fund has become more than a ledger for him. It often transforms into a chat, with donors using their donation messages to give advice, offer comforting words, and engage with each other.
"My experience trying to get my health insurance to cover the claim was far more traumatic than my injury" - a donation message from Luigi Mangione's 78 year old supporter.
Insurance companies intentionally make their claims and appeals procedures burdensome and stressful in order to discourage people from trying to get the care they paid for. As a result, less than 1% of denials are ever appealed, even though over 80% of denials are reversed when appealed.
Tens of thousands of dollars were donated to Luigi Mangione's IegaI fund because or in honor of those who are no longer with us due to denied insurance claims or lack of insurance.
A common misconception: you need to support Luigi Mangione and his legal team to donate to his fund. In the past five days 1-5 people made 17 anonymous donations totaling ~$100 to express their hate for him/his defense team. In response, around 15 supporters made over 20 donations worth ~$400.
"I, We, We the People, Americans, healthcare workers, the working class, the whole world, humanity, justice... are behind you, Luigi." - a compilation of messages from Luigi Mangione's legal fund
"I lost [my mom] and my faith that day. But you have instilled a hope that I thought was gone." - a comment left on Luigi Mangione's legaI fund
"My patients are more afraid of the hospital bill than of dying." - Anonymous donor's comment left on Luigi Mangione's legaI fund.
