☆ Mario developed a fear of the dark and claustrophobic environments after being trapped in a painting by King Boo + uneasiness/discomfort around framed paintings. Feels the need to keep companions within arms reach at all times when traveling at night/in the dark.
Struggles with the texture/feel of paint after events of sunshine + Luigi’s mansion (having body dissolve into paint, slowly losing feeling in his limbs and body, being overall deprived of his senses while imprisoned). At times can be a trigger
Avoids Boo Woods and surrounding areas whenever possible; feels guilty due to falling for the boo’s trickery. Torn between wanting to accompany Luigi to E. Gadd’s lab to soothe his own anxiety and wanting Luigi to avoid the place entirely (despite logically luigi being the most qualified and skilled ghost hunter on this side of the warp pipe and luigi proving himself capable time and time again)
☆ (Unwillingly) wakes up early every single day due to the triple threat of insomnia + anxiety + ADHD – consequently, usually first of the two to wake up. Able to fall asleep anywhere instantly with the exception of at night and in his own bed.
Sleep during the day: good, solid, actually substantial; can never get enough of it
Sleep at night: a shallow puddle of sleep where every stray sound or shift of the wind shakes him from rest
Traditionally calming music/white noise only makes him more anxious. Reminds him about luigi succumbing to sleep on mount pajama and the ground slipping away beneath him and danger danger danger he needs to hurry. Reminds him of waking up in bowsers castle, alone, his loved ones thousands of dimensions away and a void eating away at the skies
☆ Coffee doesn’t work on him (ADHD edition).
The only reason why he still drinks coffee every morning is because the habit is familiar. It reminds him of home.
☆ Has a handful of stupid scars. Those include: burning himself on a pot lid after taking it out of the oven, trying to jump over a fence in high school with chicken wire, running his go-kart straight into a cactus, ect.
☆ Eternally bad at video games, no matter the genre – but specifically bad at 2D platformers!
☆ Decently good at art, mostly figure drawing and background drawing. As a child, could not stop doodling and drawing on everything, including his brother – the only thing that Mario did more than drawing as a child was running amok causing chaos with Luigi. Was discouraged to continue drawing some time in middle school and especially high school by his dad. Started drawing again after finding the mushroom kingdom. Very calming.
☆ Despite being a genuinely friendly and social guy (comfortably extrovert; he can strike up a conversation with just about everyone), most people don’t know him outside of the amicable hero of the mushroom kingdom. Friends with everyone; close with no one (hurts that much harder when you lose them).
To be clear, he’s not aware of this. He doesn’t consciously want to keep everyone at arms length so people won’t realize he is not as brave as the hero is supposed to be, not as strong as a hero is supposed to be. It’s just wearing a mask for so long you forget you’re able to take it off until it starts to crack.
something something, the standards of heroism are idealized and nobody needs to fit the image to be considered a hero (except for him. He needs to be the hero that everyone is expecting him to be)
☆ In addition to plumbing, he helps with construction and even sometimes travels with the Captain Toad and the Toad Brigade to help them track and log naturally warp pipes. Always makes sure the warp pipe is stable/security ropes are secured tightly before testing the warp pipe.
☆ Firebrand causes Mario to run hot. Mario feels like an absolute furnace – great for the winter, absolutely terrible during the summer. Unfortunately, it skews Mario’s perception of temperature.
Powers are weakest during winter solstice and strongest during summer solstice; consequently, least energy in winter and most energy in summer
☆ Eventually developed chronic back and knee pain due to injuries + strenuous labor.

Luigi
☆ Luigi doesn’t remember most of the events that took place during the end of the world (Super paper mario). His most solid memory is of Bowser and Peach’s disaster of a wedding before things get foggy. He remembers storming Count Bleck’s castle with the others but his memories cut off there. What’s worse is that he can tell something happened during the storming of Count Bleck’s castle: the void’s gone, Count Bleck and Mario’s pixl friend Tipi is gone, everything’s back to normal and he feels like his head is going to split clean open.
Mannerisms from Mr. L brought to the surface. Luigi calls mario mr, jumps-a-lot during some friendly brotherly banter and Mario suddenly looks like he wants to cry and apologize all at once
Luigi gains some mannerisms/habits from Super Dimentio, although Luigi does not notice the connection until someone (not Mario) comments on it
Having a mind controlling flower in one’s head leaves some consequences. His memory and balance are even worse now and he had to retune fine movement in his hands through physical therapy. Has bad brain fog some days because of it where he just. cannot focus
☆ Luigi has a fear of dogs – and subsequently chain chomps – in addition to fear of the dark, fear of heights and general anxiety about doing something wrong/making the wrong choice
The two of them had a hard time sleeping after everything that happened with king boo.
☆ Also has insomnia but chooses to remedy insomnia by simply not sleeping. He would be able to pass out through the entire night tomorrow (he fails to account the entire day between the current night and the next).
Susceptible to calming music/music sleep aids (the magic of Pi’illo Island affected him more deeply than anyone else, spending most of his time on the island asleep and still managing to be tired).
Voted most likely to fall asleep through the end of the world. It takes a while for him to fall asleep naturally but once he is asleep, he is Asleep. Out like a light. You Cannot Wake Him until he gets a full night’s rest
☆ Caffeine works too well on him, feels like his heart is going to fully beat out of his chest and everything becomes Way Too Much.
Prefers tea to coffee on the day-to-day due to lower caffeine content. A nice cup of tea to end the day is part of his ideal routine
only fully switched to decaf (curtsey of e.gadd) after the events of spm because it messed with his recovery
☆ Despite being the more clumsy of the two, the injuries that he tends to sustain are relatively minor in comparison to Mario who will immediately throw himself headfirst into danger if it means it would protect his loved ones
☆ Better at video games than mario but prefers to backseat gaming and provide semi-helpful, semi-snarky comments about mario’s repeated gaming failures (his advice boils down to “get good” and “try not to die”)
☆ Mario took all of the artistic ability in the womb – can;t draw for shit
Has a pretty good singing voice. His own performance anxiety sabotages his chances of actually showcasing it.
☆ In addition to plumbing, Luigi works as E. Gadd’s unpaid intern/research partner. Is in charge of fixing up/renovating the brother’s karts (and may add some features that are less than road safe but shhh peach doesn’t need to know about it
Working for E. Gadd actually helped Luigi feel more confident in his abilities as a hero. Sure e. Gadd isn’t the most traditionally encouraging person out there but is still supportive, in his own weird uncle way. After all, Luigi is E. gadd’s best ghost hunter and it would be best if people (luigi especially) remembers that
The ghosts make pretty good company when they aren’t being brainwashed/controlled by an undead tyrant who wants to murder luigi on every plane possible. At least they have something to relate to
☆ Will make complicated solutions to relatively simple problems if you allow him (Luigi logic).
☆ Has a lower tolerance to the cold than Mario but doesn’t have the elemental drawback/weakness to the cold that the Firebrand does. The Thunderhand is the strongest during storms (excess sparking/energy when a thunderstorm rolls)/autumn, weakest in areas of high humidity/springtime.
Everytime i see people criticize mario sunshine, it makes me giggle because i have this head canon that Mario was LIVID after that vacation, like he did not enjoy it anymore than the player did lmfaoo..
