The Race to the Oscar 2012 - Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

A touching story about the search for answers in a time where nothing makes sense.

Oskar Schell is a weird smart boy that has a father that completely understands him, and when his father dies, victim to the attack of the World Trade Center, on 9/11, he has to deal with it in his own special way. A year after to the "Worst Day" Oskar goes into his dad's closet and finds a mysterious key. The only clue is that the key was intended for someone called Black. And then, the search begins!

Oskar creates a clever system to visit all the people named Black that live in New York City, only to try to reconnect to his father. The tour around city is inspiring, just as the Blacks he visits, because each one of them share his/her story with Oskar, wich makes it all worth it.

The cinematography is great, with some good camera angles. The actors are pretty good too, with an excellent supporting cast. The boy is good but it gets a little annoying during the movie. The two stars, Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock, wanting another Oscar, do their jobs well, but nothing out of their confort zone.

The movie is inspiring drama that does not innovate, but it fullfills its role, and if it's faithful to the book, or not, I don't know. But it sure made me wanna read it.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was nominated in 2 categories on the 84th Academy Awards, including the one for The Best Picture.

The Race to the Oscar 2012 - Hugo

Martin Scorscese's first attempt in 3D was a huge success. Hugo is a movie that celebrates the 7th art in a poetic and innocent way. 

After the death of his father, Hugo Cabret goes to live at Le Gare du Nord, where he is responsible for adjusting the clocks of the station. The only thing that he takes with him is a little robot, that he and his father were trying to make it work, but it was missing a key with the shape of a heart. He expects to find a message from his father telling him how to fix things and where he belongs

If you're going to watch Hugo expecting a children's movie, you're terribly mistaken! First of all, it is a class about cinema and it's history going from Georges Méliès, famous for using illusionism and father of the special effects, to the Lumière brothers, the reality's filmmakers.

The special effects were amazing. There were only two or three moments that they seemed overdone. The 3D was very well applied taking you through fogs, snowstorms and  Méliès'  filmography, including the famous "Le Voyage dans la Lune" (1902).

Hugo is an observer, watching the people through the clocks of the train station. In a way he represents us, the spectators that look through a "window" to watch a magical, and way more interesting, world.

Hugo was nominated in 11 categories on the 84th Academy Awards, including the one for The Best Picture.

The Race to the Oscar 2012

The 84th Academy Awards is just around the corner, February 26th, and I still didn't watch all the movies nominated for the category "Best  Picture", the big prize of the night. But since I watched most of them I'm gonna start to write a series of posts dedicated to each nominee, placing my bet on the winner of this year. Hope you enjoy!

When we talk about comics production from Brazil our minds go directly to Monica's Gang created by Mauricio de Souza. A few years back our national production was limited to that, and writers and illustrators started to leave to seek better chances on other countries. The market changed and is constantly growing, and leaving don't seems to be the only viable alternative for the artists. 

Graphic novels are becoming a huge success around here, but Monica's Gang still is on top, and even tough it seem confortable Mauricio de Souza likes to innovate and will launch four new graphic novels based on his original characters writen an drawn by other artists, hoping to grab an older audience. 

The project seems promising!

When we were children we usually saw the world as a new discovery everyday. By growing up many people forget what that's like, all due to their routines and responsabilities. People get stuck in their own lifes. They forget the children within them and that slowly kills them.

Curiosity is what moves the world. Look around and be able to really see the world, with all it's magic. It must be amazing! We shouldn't feel miserable for our lifes, we should feel happy and just feel sorry for the thing we didn't do.

MTV - Sex is no accident [Now on video]

Esse ano a MTV lançou a campanha "Sex is no accident" que mostrava algumas situações engraçadas no formato de quadrinhos. A arte trabalhou com traços retrô que lembravam as comics dos anos 80, tudo em prol de uma causa, a luta contra o HIV, incentivando o uso da camisinha.

Agora ela relança a campanha em vídeo, utilizando os mesmos traços da campanha impressa em algumas animações divertidas que mostram algumas situações interessantes surreais.
