“–yeah, yeah, you can just put it on the kitchen counter. thanks, luc!” casper’s voice, along with those of his friends helping out with the move, can be heard filtering off the walls from the end of the hallway. the small group files in and out of the apartment building with casper’s things from the truck outside, careening and shuffling along stairs, elevators, and hallways to help bring in as much as they can. the door to his brand new apartment at the end of the hallway is propped open, music playing from someone’s speaker within, the sun is shining from the hallway’s window and a breeze kicks in through the windows of his new space–all in all, casper is having a great day. this is the most excited he’s been in a long time, it’s a fresh start for him and the two tiny human beings he loves most in this whole world (who are currently being watched at his mom’s during the move), and not to mention, he’s worked his ass off to be able to do this for them. it feels good, escaping the ugly cloud his daughters’ mother left over them for a while once she left, moving to a safer neighborhood and a bigger apartment, great schools for when the time comes, and hopefully, great neighbors, but he has yet to figure that out. that is until he steps out of the doorway, ready to go grab some more boxes, but stops himself as his eyes fixate on a rather petite young woman walking in his direction. his thoughts slowly trail off, and without even meaning to, he just sort of stops in his place as she approaches, unaware that he’s just dumbly staring when he should be speaking, saying anything.

stepping out of the elevator rhiannon almost didn’t notice the activity throughout the hallway, her own music blaring through her headphones as her gaze was focused on phone in hand. this was her cool down post-workout, checking missed messages and notifications. avoiding phone use during her regimen was a standard she set years ago. the movement around her was reminiscent of her first day in the complex, surely someone was moving in and it didn’t take long for rhi to have a guess as to whom. out of everyone in the hall, this stranger was the only one paying attention to her. maybe it was her appearance. she was sweaty and her braided hair had started to come undone, not to mention she probably smelled like a locker room. it dawned on her that the apartment being filled was the one across from hers, no getting around interaction with the male now. god he was tall. rhiannon couldn’t casually make eye contact with him as she neared her front door, having to crane her neck given the height difference. despite the music coming from the apartment, silence still fell between them for a short period. “moving in?” she inquired while removing her earbuds. it was a dumb question with an obvious answer but the male could’ve been part of the moving crew for all she knew.
