✧// MERC WITH A MOUTH ❜
“And you would know firsthand what happened with Zaeed?”
Of course he would, he thinks to himself, for what escapesthe Shadow Broker’s spindly reaches? The ghosts in the static find home in theBroker’s embrace—even he, even his story has not been lost in the waves of radio bursts. A little biotic boy who wanted to be better than his Omega slums. There are still shades of that child fluttering in the subcutaneous fat of this aging mercenary, pulling his lips into a thin frown.
“I try to avoid those who know more about me than I do. I’m sure you understand that well enough.”
❝ Heard it through the grapevine, no secrets on Omega, yadda yadda: you know how these things go, ❞ and if ‘the grapevine’ is taken to mean the Broker’s vast wealth of information ( most of which he didn’t even have access to: which practically no one had access to ), then there’s some honesty in what he says. He isn’t one to judge that which he didn’t have a hand in ( the exact mantra he liked to live by was 'judge not, unless your paycheck’s involved’ ), but from what he could discern, all that happened with Massani was screwy, and he wasn’t too fond of things that implied his own boss’ unpredictability or capriciousness: it made loyalty that much harder to anneal.
❝ And you’ve got a point: but unfortunately for you and fortunately for me, getting off the record is a lot harder than it sounds especially when the person keeping that record is the Shadow Broker. ❞ He isn’t even certain what sort of dirt on his own life is stored in those databanks, and he’s resigned himself to being content that he’s just another nobody. ❝ Best way to stay under the radar’s to avoid doing anything which might land you there in the first place: though by the looks of it, you already broke that rule of thumb, Hot Shot. ❞
