Maybe I'll do music art someday too, who knows lmao
I got Nomad this week, and experimenting with 3D for the first time (besides touching Zbrush like twice in my computer classes in hs a decade ago XD) has been REALLY cool!!!
I wanted to start with an arcane character since the planes are so defined, amd I' glad I did, I'm having a lot of fun with it!
I did feel pretty motion sick after my second session though, so I think I need to work woth more breaks until I get used to it LOL
Here's a video I took from a little earlier on in the process so ypu can get a peek at the profile (its improved now but alas, I'm too eepy to get a current video)
Also my lovely friend who studies 3D has informed me about remeshing, making the eyeballs seperate objects, and the like. So I will be fixing his chest polygons and other stuff next session XD
Two studies and some Sukuna doodles from last night :3
Straight in with inks because I'm trying to get better on my first passes! I'm alllmost done with this sketchbook which is wild. I've been really enjoying traditional art the last few months.
Materials used: (on studies) Tombow water-based brush marker in 743, red ballpoint pen, & Uni Pin Fine Line brush pen in black. (On Sukuna) black Muji-brand gel pen (the clicky ones) in size 0.5.
Jjk hyperfixation is at a consistent low simmer, I just wanna draw all of them all the time TwT
I did have a really fun idea for a toji painting tho, so thats exciting hehe - I blame the artist @/to00fu on here (not going to bother tham with a tag) for my recent Sukuna interest uwu their art is so tasty and endlessly inspiring. Sometimes I'll just scroll through their blog and stare at all their gorgeous work <3
A lil' Yuji digital painting practice! I've been loving S3 pt.1 so much (pfft whaaaat? Hyperfixating? me?)
I'm really trying to loosen up lately. I've spent so many years trying to get technical skills down, and now I would like to play more :3 (speedpaint & more yappy art thoughts under the cut!)
Last night I found the art of Nachal on Bsky and I'm just absolutely in love with it! I immediately had to start painting. Their mastery or color, suggestion, and abstract-and-form balancing - GUH!!!! I'm eating it all. (I obviously wasn't trying to imitate or study their style here, rather just try and some of the texture and looseness they employ into my usual painting style :D)
My itadori painting here took a little under two hours to do, probably saved myself a lot of time not doing an undersketch (I tend to get carried away/attached) and just jumping straight into painting. I was directly referencing the pose from this Pinterest image:
Because it's such a close crop and simple composition, I didn't really feel an overwhelming need for it. Usually on my complicated paintings I like to at least do a quick comp thumbnail or smth. All I did here was make sure I painted Yuji beefier than the reference hehehe
Other than that, I've just been experimenting with layer settings lately. Lots of color, gradient maps, etc. this week or so, it's been fun!
I was originally going to make a Megumi to go with this, but idk... I want to draw him at some point, he's been one of my favs since I first watched the show. My beloved sea urchin XD
I have so many wips rn and I've been busy sewing cosplays (not JJK ones for now, I'm trying to get through the plans I already have LOL) so I've been doing a lot of non-drawing/painting stuff lately.
Posca paint pen, Prismacolor colored pencils, & white Gelly Roll pen on blue construction paper.
Yeah, I love her and need to know everything about her expeditiously. Uro and Kirara are my new darlings of S3 so far.
(Detail zoom + color variant under the cut)
I used the liquify tool after scanning the painting in bc there were a couple bits that needed shifting (my sketch was also in paint so there wasn't really a way to adjust in real time w/o losing the paper color)
The pink/'natural'-toned one was me experimenting with gradient maps and color layers, the multi-colored one is the original. I've been trying to pull myself out of the safety of muted colors LMAO
I tried to exaggerate the shapes and push the shadows, using less of the airbrush than last time to have more texture in the piece.
Basically I wanted to try more of a stylized approach today rather than more realistic (*^ w ^ )/
Below is the reference I used, pulled from Pinterest as well as the speedpaint:
Portrait Study
Spent 2h 45m on this one. It's not perfect (reference & speedpaint under the cut) but I'm still REALLY pleased with what I managed in that time :3
I've been rusty lately so I wanna do some portrait studies (and maybe more experimental pieces?) to push my art back in a direction I'm happy with! Loosen up a little by going back to fundementals & play
( ^ u ^ )/
tbh it probably would have taken me less time if I'd remembered to flip my canvas early on XD so much of the time I spent was just de-wonkifying at the 50% mark LOL
I've mostly been doing traditional work the last few months (painting and alcohol marker work specifically) as well as a lot of non-drawing work like sewing, so my body's mapping system with my screenless tablet is kinda not there rn pfft
I didn't eyedrop any of these colors, I just had the pic up on pinterest on my other monitor so I couldn't be tempted, I've been enjoying mixing colors with my traditional work, and feel a lot more confident in my eye now, even if it's still not perfect
I'm still trying to make that video essay on Vi's character assassination in S2, but everytime I think about S2 I get so mad I end up just setting the project back down XD
I have so much to say TwT
And its not like a hate the whole thing, there were good individual moments, but it was such a gd mess. Nothing close to the mastery S1 achieved :(
I had this thought when S2 first came out, and it will not leave me. What am I supposed to do with this? I want to make something about it but what on earth would I make? The brainworms are throwing a rave and I have no music for them, I fear they may riot.
Progress for the night! The underpainting (right) always makes me feel like I fucked up horribly, but I gotta trust the process! The plain sketch (left) is there so you can tell wtf this is LOL
*this is how I imagine the characters would self-identify if they had modern terms and were actually self-aware about any measure of queerness they did or did not hold.
☆°☆°☆°☆°☆
Ciel Phantomhive: The most bisexual bitch that has ever existed.
Also takes what people say about their own identity at face value and will argue in their favor forever, even if he doesn't personally understand it. (He will probably make comments that are accidentally offensive though. He doesnt mean anything by it, he's just a doof doing his best.)
Soma Kadar: Pansexual.
Edgar Redmond: Straight, Polyam.
Would happily makeout with a feminine boy, but wouldn't have sex with them.
It is not however, an objection to male/atypical anatomy, he'd happily date a trans or intersex woman. Its about the person's self-identity. He's attracted to feminity. He wants multiple girlfriends and for the girlfirends to be girlfriends. Closed group. Nonbinary folks are a case-by case basis.
Maurice Cole: Straight. Thats it. Uses more 'feminine' leaning beauty purely for advantage. Not for gender or sexuality reasons. Hypersexual, but too self-absorbed to truly love anyone. If he ever does fall in love, it will destroy him, especially if it does not go how he wants, but even if it does... it will upend the entirety of his daily life, his perspective, his obsession with power.
I know this might be a 'hot take' of sorts, given how blantantly queer his actions can be read, but I think his 'affections' towards Redmond feel in line with Victorian sensibilities between young people of the same sex, and align with Maurice's desperation for power.
Joanne Hargrove: Gay, but Biromantic.
Can also see an argument for genderfluid between being a man, and some form of non-binary identity.
Laurence Bluewer: Bi. Moderately frustrated by this. He thought it would pass after leaving an all-boys environment and having access to women outside his family, however, while some women did strike his fancy, some men did as well.
Clayton: Demisexual biromantic
McMillan: Straight and will be OBSESSED with his wife someday. The most doting husband ever.
Also, not a queer thing, but he would drive you to every planned parenthood appointment without judgement, and would be a little offended if you didn't ask him specifically.
Herman Greenhill: Bi curious.
Edward Midford: Straight lmao
Gregory Violet: Being a man is convienient. It works well enough. Being a woman is too complicated in his era to make it worth his time. But if he'd been born a a woman, that would have been acceptable. What is gender but a dedication of roles to play.
(What piques his interest piques his interest, everything is case-by-case) (I don't think he'd like labels much)
...
Thats all for now, if you want more of my thoughts you can comment or drop stuff in my asks!
Been rewatching this one a lot recently and I just looked at Redmond like: "Wait. He's a fruit but idk what flavor. Bc he's not giving Original Flavor™️ Gay Man to me." the rest spawned from there haha
Working on a character tag page and had to put Dracula as 'favorite classic monster' hehe (Speedpaint & other versions under the cut)
Anyways, here's the speedpaint:
[Written and completed back in October, I simply forgot to post it, and its been loafing in drafts ever since smh]
I always forget how much I LOVE doing proper painting studies like this. They take a lot of brain power, but it's so satisfying, and I feel like I always learn a lot in the process :3
A few days ago (from when I originally wrote this, ages ago now) I actually hosted a Dracula movie night for a few of my friends who'd never seen it before and that was a TON of fun, they really loved it (I was trying to tell them it was totally their vibe haha). It was the best time, I can't wait to host more movie nights this Autumn season :D (we only got a cpuple more smh)
(My fav time of year uwu)
Also yes, I am retroactively changing the category from 'best villain' to 'favorite classic monster'
