when lupe suggested they just see what happens with nolan delilah raised her eyebrows slightly, “are you sure?” she asked, a mischievous smile on her lips. the only reason she had been so secretive in the first place was because that was what lupe wanted. she hadn’t wanted to ruin the friendship she had with nolan, and delilah had respected that. her family drama shouldn’t get in the way of other people’s friendships. but now that the option to be out in the open was there, delilah was relieved, she honestly couldn’t wait to see the look on nloan’s face when he saw them holding hands for the first time.

“sounds like a good idea to me, babe.” she replied, one hand running through lupe’s perfect hair. the girl made her do and feel things she never had before, and she wanted to have every new experience she could with her. she wouldn’t dare admit it was love yet, but it was certainly heading that direction. “if he has a problem with it there’s really nothing he can do, right?” she prompted before she pressed her lips against lupe’s with a gentleness she wasn’t yet used to. she pulled away after a moment and looked at her, taking in every feature of her gorgeous face, “you’re my only weakness, lupe ramirez.”

As far as Lupe was concerned, there were only a few potential outcomes to being open with Delilah. Either Nolan accepted them or he didn’t, and either the rest of their friends took sides or simply allowed Lupe to do as she pleased. Quite frankly, she half expected the worst, but reminded herself that surely Nolan and the others would see reason. They might not understand at first, sure, but they’d come around. That was why she felt a renewed sense of hope for whatever it was she and Delilah had going on. If there could potentially be a light at the end of the tunnel, she might as well see this through.

Returning the kiss, Lupe couldn’t help but beam. “Likewise, Delilah Jules,” she teased, booping the blonde on the nose. “It’s a shame that I’ve got work in an hour, otherwise we’d be able to spend more time together. The birds and the deer are calling to me, but maybe we can hang out when my shift is over? I’ll treat you to the greasiest burgers Talbot’s has to offer.”

though having things out in the open felt good, it was terrifying at the same time. delilah had never laid herself on the line like this before, she had always been the person to reject others and stay completely unattached. but it was impossible to do that with lupe. there was something that pulled her toward the other girl, and as much as she tried to ignore it and pull the other way, she just ended up closer and closer to her.

hearing lupe try to assure her that delilah couldn’t fuck up too badly was somewhat relieving, but still hard to believe. the moment that lupe found out about the secret she was keeping she’d be gone, and that was the scariest part. the longer she kept her species hidden from lupe the more angry she would be if she ever found out, but it was a risk delilah had to take. 

“well, i’m glad you feel the same way,” she said, the tiniest of smiles on her lips despite the nagging fear that lupe would hate her when she discovered the truth. lupe was still set on taking things slow, but delilah usually didn’t function that way. if she was going to do this thing with her, she wanted to start now, but if lupe wanted to continue to be casual about it she would wait. “yeah, we don’t need labels or anything yet.” she agreed, though it wasn’t exactly what she wanted. she took another step closer to lupe and draped her arms over the other girl’s shoulders, a content smile on her face as she looked at her. “i just wish we didn’t have to hide from nolan so much. i want to be able to take you out and not worry about him finding out.”

For most of her life, Lupe had grown accustomed to being everyone’s last option. No one had ever given her the time of day, much less actually shown genuine romantic interest in her. Everything she experienced with Delilah felt so new, which was both exciting and terrifying all at once. Yet she found herself willing to see just how far they’d take this, and how much longer Delilah would put up with her before growing bored, annoyed, or regretful. 

A small smile graced her face as Delilah’s arms came to rest around her shoulders, and she placed her own hands on Delilah’s hips for good measure. “Maybe we should just...let the chips fall into place,” she suggested. “We don’t have to rub it in his face, but let’s not worry about him finding out. We should go out wherever and whenever we want. If he happens to see us or someone runs to tell him, then so be it. Someone with some actual sense once told me that if he’s really my friend, he’ll understand -- and accept that we’re a thing.”

deliah felt her heart beating quicker than it normally did as she waited for lupe’s response. despite everything she had tried to prevent it, she had grown to care about lupe as something more than a friend. though she didn’t know exactly what that meant yet, she did know what at this point she wouldn’t be able to bring herself to use or manipulate her. of course delilah would continue to keep her species a secret since lupe hated fairies, but other than that it was time delilah was honest with her about what was going on in her head. 

at lupe’s words delilah chewed lightly on her lip, eyes trained on her and her body language. what she said was hopelessly optimistic, and delilah knew it. delilah was a terrible person, and nolan was right about her. and even though she knew that, and she knew that lupe would probably end up in the middle of something between her and her cousin, she wanted the girl so badly and was blinded by her desire. maybe the short-term happiness that they would have would be worth the pain that was sure to follow.

“luoe,” she started, unsure of how to continue, “you’re the only one who’s ever had faith in me.” the tiniest of smiles replaced her previously nervous expression. “i’m just scared i’m going to fuck everything up with you, and the last thing i want is for you to get hurt. but, at the same time, i know how well we work together. i like you more than i planned on liking you, and that’s probably something i should trust, right? ‘cause i think you feel the same way, don’t you?”

“Wow, how the turns have tabled,” Lupe lightly joked, offering a small frown. “I’m used to being the one that fucks things up, so at least you can rest easy knowing the bar is set pretty low. You could literally stab me in the back with a knife and I’d still find a way to look on the bright side. Besides, I’m not exactly in a position to judge other people for their mistakes.”

Truthfully, Lupe craved the attention and companionship she received from Delilah. No one had ever given her much consideration, so to have a pretty girl actually falling for her? It was definitely a boost Lupe’s confidence needed at this point in her life. She wasn’t ready to give that up, even if it meant putting her heart on the line.

“I do feel the same about you,” she sighed. “I’m just as scared as you are. This is still new to me, but...I’m willing to work on it. We don’t have to move at the speed of light, either. Admitting our feelings doesn’t mean we have to jump headfirst into anything if you don’t want to.”

Although all of Jess’s concern was directed at Lupe and her crooked fingers, that didn’t stop Jess from throwing a glance in the warlock’s direction all the same, sharing a split second to the cat too. Witchy codes of conduct — she wondered what that entailed. Hell, she wondered what the guy’s life was like in comparison to that of ordinary humans. She couldn’t really pry when it came to Ophelia, so this warlock… maybe he was their next best bet. “Good call,” Jess decided with a firm nod, though she knew if anything else dramatic happened to them tonight, she’d forget immediately to bring up the fact later.

Watching protectively however as the guy began to survey her friend’s hand, Jess felt herself clutch at the seats of the car, glancing around habitually for some idea of a weapon in case… well, in case of anything. Knowing the supernatural, this warlock could work any number on them at any given time and she had next to nothing to defend them with. She knew better than to trust a stranger, especially a supernatural one, but as of right now… they also had no choice.

By the time she looked back at Lupe, sweaty and still trembling a.little likely from the adrenaline slowly weaning itself out of her system, Jess’s eyes noticed how normal her hand suddenly looked. “Holy shit…” She breathed, just as she was asked if she was alright. “Yeah, no, I’m… I’m fine…” She exhaled, marveling at the work and then looking at the warlock with gratitude. “Right, yeah we should definitely bounce before he wakes up. How uh — confident are you that your spell worked? That he’ll remember?”

For a few moments, Lupe was lost in a trance of utter disbelief. Seconds ago, she’d been enduring excruciating pain and wondering if she’d ever be able to use her hand again. Now? It was as if nothing ever happened. No pain lingered, the fingers had crackled back into place, and the skin was no longer bruising. It was as perfect as could be, and the rest of her body also felt re-energized, as if she'd just woken up from a short, comfortable nap.

Roman was still leaning against the door on Lupe’s side, mulling over the questions. “It’s my first time wiping someone’s memory,” he admitted, “but I’m good at what I do. Guess my parents pushing me to study and practice paid off, y’know? As far as I know, he won’t remember a thing. On the off chance he does...well, we’ll figure something out."

“We’ll all be dead,” Lupe suddenly corrected, trying to stress to severity of the situation. So let’s pray to whatever god you believe in that the spell worked.”

Roman gave her a once-over before shrugging and replying with, “Fair enough. Guess time will tell.” And with that, he shut the door to her side, which prompted Salem to pop up out of his bag and peer to the side of his chair, eyeing the two passengers curiously. It didn’t take long for Roman to slide into the driver’s seat, and he let out a deep sigh once seated. “Why can’t humans just mind their own business? I swear, all you humans just run around looking for trouble.”

It wouldn’t even be difficult to orchestrate it so that most all of their meetings occurred her at Alastor where booze would flow freely. After-all it was where Nova spent the majority of her time, and Lupe seemed comfortable enough. Could be played out under the guise of a friendship full of clashing schedules, easy enough to suggest that since she was a bit tied to the club it would be the best chance for them to hang out. 

“I’m always right.” Nova said it as if emboldened by liquor, sipping her cocktail with a bright grin. She was glad of that expression already fixed onto her face when Lupe let slip the names of the other two triangle points. Delilah and Nolan, she made a mental note to seek them out. Outwardly though she paid the slip no mind, of course. “You’ve gotta get a video of that moment if it happens girl, because I will want to see this poor suckers face!”

It was cruel to be throwing out jokes at Nolan’s expense, but Lupe was drunk and prone to talking right out of her ass. To make matters worse, she was being hyped up by Nova and encouraged to act this way. Maybe when she was sober she’d know better, but for now, she was more inclined to poke fun at her friend. After all, it seemed harmless in the moment.

“Call World Star and let them know I got one hell of a video for ‘em,” she snorted, toying with her now empty shot glass. It was obvious that she was far past tipsy, needing a moment to gather her senses.  “Maybe I’ll hit you up when I finally tell him what’s up. You can come with a camera and record the whole thing. We could be viral sensations over night, man.”

everything about lupe made delilah want to throw caution to the wind. the girl was driving her crazy, making her feel things she had always so actively avoided. and though in the back of her mind she knew that distancing from her would be the best thing for both of them she found herself doing the exact opposite. they spent a ton of time together, physically they were always brushing shoulders or holding hands, and though delilah was as closed off emotionally as they come she found herself wanting to be truthful with lupe.

delilah used her powers to sense lupe’s emotions, and she felt the insecurity and disappointment that the other girl was cycling through. a frown set on delilah’s face and she brought her gaze up from the ground to lupe. when she played along with delilah’s unconvincing excuse she nodded her head slightly. “yeah, maybe we should,” she agreed. she wanted to reach out for her, but lupe shoved her hands in her pocket and looked like the last thing she wanted was for delilah to come near her again. she was already ruining things, she didn’t know how to act around someone she actually liked, she unraveled around lupe.

at lupe’s bambi joke delilah shrugged lightly, following lupe where she went. a moment of silence passed between them before delilah spoke, “lupe,” she started quietly, “i fucked up.” she couldn’t bear the thought of lupe blaming herself for delilah pulling away so quickly, and she knew she had to say something. “i - i really like kissing you and stuff,” she sounded awkward and unsure, it was completely uncharacteristic of her usual charm and confidence. “i’m just - i don’t know - i’m trying to keep you safe.” she said, stopping and turning to face her more straight on. stop talking, stop talking, stop talking, her mind was reeling as she looked at her, but her heart had taken over. “i like you too much, i don’t want to hurt you. i wouldn’t be, well, i’m not good for you.”

Lupe was content to walk back to her car in an awkward silence, but was surprised to instead find Delilah trying to explain herself. Maybe she’d been a little too obvious with her disappointment; Lupe was always awful at keeping her emotions in check. She was the type who wore her heart on her sleeve, even though she tried so hard not to. Being closed off made you less likely to get hurt, but given everything she’d endured in West Hollow, Lupe had a poor habit of wearing her heart on her sleeve.

Coming to a stop when Delilah did, Lupe was silent for a moment, trying to take every word in and process their meaning. There was always the chance that Delilah was simply humoring her and trying to let her down easy. On the other hand, it was also just as likely that Delilah definitely 

“Nolan told me as much,” she admitted. “He didn’t go into specifics, but he said you were trouble. But...if you were as bad as he said, wouldn’t we be butting heads and arguing, like, all the time? I mean, I guess you know yourself best? But I haven’t seen anything that leads me to believe you’re a terrible person. If anything, you’ve just been proving to me how wrong Nolan is. You really need to give yourself more credit and not feed into what everyone else thinks of you.”

Jess’s head spun quickly in the direction of the warlock, shocked and surprised mostly at herself for not having even thought of it. It wasn’t as if she was some professional when it came to the supernatural, especially witches and warlocks, but the idea that maybe he’d be able to heal should have come to mind, Jess criticised herself. She was always usually thinking outside the box like that, but right now, fear owned her and it was hard to think about anyting else other than they needed to escape.

Sharing a side-glance with Lupe, Jess gave a sudden, incredulous exhale. Their luck was gushing at this point, and Jess prayed it didn’t stop there. Though at his next comment, she felt her gut restract. “That might take a while…” She muttered, though not important, as right now they just needed to follow the warlock the hell out of here.

Jess’s hand was already reaching for the doorhandle before the warlock inisted that they get in the back, not havig really thought twice about it as it was a stranger’s car and this was the epitome of her mother’s heart-attack material. Glancing at Lupe as she was still partially impaired, Jess held the door open for her before glancing at the cat in the bag, then at the warlock. She knew it wasn’t the time to say it, but the words bubbled up inside her regardless. “You know it’s pretty unsafe to have your pet ride shotgun. I just got a dog — so I was doing sme research… Anyway, it’s illegal in some places to have them up there. You know. Just in case of an accident…. cause they’d go flying — well, maybe not for you. I don’t know what kind of magic you have going on… Maybe witch laws are different, I don’t know…” Jess rambled when she was nervous or under pressure, something her friends knew well about her and were usually accustomed to. She once again shared a look with Lupe as they clambered into the back of the Jeep together, facing one another, and Jess took a moment to survrey the damage the demon had caused once more. She visibly cringed, “That looks janky as hell, Lupe… Does it hurt really bad?”

Roman glanced over at where his cat had peered out from the bag, and the two shared an almost comical look -- as if they were in on something the humans weren’t. “He’ll take his chances,” he replied, figuring they didn’t have time to get into the specifics of Salem’s safety. “For the record, though, there’s not really such thing as witch laws. I mean, we have our own code of conduct, I guess? It’s not -- okay, actually? Let’s put a pin in that and save the conversation for later.”

Keeping Lupe’s door open, he took her hand between both of his to inspect the damage, ignoring the way she hissed in pain. “Wow, he did a number on you,” he remarked, lightly tisking in disapproval. It took no more than a few seconds for warmth to begin coursing through her arm, followed by a soft glowing that illuminated her hand. Then, as if she’d never found herself being tortured by Hugo, the hand was right back to normal with absolutely no pain leftover. 

“Are you feeling okay?” He called over to Jess, all while Lupe marveled at her newly reformed hand. “If you got injured, I should get it healed up before it gets any worse. If not, then we can probably start heading out now while that demon’s still knocked the fuck out.”

This whole resurgence of girl power had been making her life so much easier. Make a few punchy statements about being condescended or toxic masculinity and every woman around you rallied like it was some kind of war cry. It was what Lupe wanted to hear, because everyone wanted to hear that they were on the right path and people agreed with them. She might be laying it on a little thick for someone who had only just met her, but it was easy to blame that on the shots. Tipsy human girls bonded like they needed to meet a quota. 

“Exactly! Being a loyal friend and respecting his opinion is one thing, but like, there’s a line y’know? He doesn’t own you.” Nova pulled a face, like she felt the injustice almost as strongly as Lupe herself did. In reality of course she wanted to jump up and down with glee. This girl was too easy to pull to pieces! She sipped her cocktail, nodding along with what she said, “that sounds like a good plan, attempting reconciliation. Who knows, maybe trying to be mindful of what you think will help the two of them put aside their differences. This chick sounds great though, don’t let him hold you back if it doesn’t work out the way you want.”

The drinks definitely played a part in how compliant Lupe was with all this. Being tipsy -- borderline wasted, even -- was enough to have Lupe agreeing with everything Nova was saying. It was everything she needed to hear and more, perhaps because Lupe desperately sought validation for her issues. Besides, things weren’t too serious with Delilah yet. They’d hooked up once and spent time together, which technically constituted as dates. But were they serious? Not entirely, even if part of Lupe wanted them to be. 

“You’re right,” she eventually agreed. “I’m my own woman and so is Delilah. Nolan’ll come around, I’m sure of it.” Lupe was too far gone to even realize the slip of their names, allowing herself to trust someone who genuinely seemed friendly. “If he doesn’t, then at least it’ll be fun to watch his head explode when he finally puts two and two together.”

when lupe’s lips connected with hers for a brief moment and pulled away immediately delilah found herself wanting more. something about the girl drove her crazy, she wasn’t sure she had ever been this physically attracted to someone. but beyond that lupe’s personality was the biggest turn on, and that was the scariest part for delilah. it was getting harder for her to deny the way she had begun to feel about lupe, and that was something that terrified her.

“bambi can watch if he wants,” delilah teased and pressed herself a little bit further into lupe. one of her hands moved from lupe’s waist to the back of her neck and she pulled her gently in to meet her lips. though the kiss definitely had passion behind it, there was an intimacy there as well. a feeling that the two of them trusted each other to be gentle and kind. delilah let herself indulge in it for a moment, moving her lips against lupe’s instinctively. but as they kissed her mind reeled, and after a few minutes she abruptly pulled away and took a step back from the other girl. “i - sorry,” she said, eyes hitting the floor and focusing on the nature around her to help calm her. she was letting herself get too involved with lupe, it was jeopardizing the very reason she had come to west hollow. and even though she knew that, all she wanted to do was pull lupe further into the woods and stay there with her for as long as they could.

delilah didn’t know what to say, how to explain her uncharacteristic reaction to kissing lupe. it would be easiest to think of some lame excuse, that way their friendship could stay just that. though she knew she wasn’t being honest with herself or lupe, she took the easy way out, like she always did. “i thought i heard something rustling in the woods,” she said and looked around them, “i may have just imagined it.”

Lupe hadn’t been expecting the sudden separation, blinking a few times in confusion. It’d just been getting good, and she’d even considered letting it go a little further despite her previous desire to take it slow. For a moment, she wondered if maybe she’d done something to soil the moment, either by pushing her luck or not pushing enough. Had that been it? Or was Delilah getting cold feet? Lupe wouldn’t be surprised if thoughts of Nolan were wedging into their relationships -- or maybe she just wasn’t enough for Delilah. It wouldn’t be the first time Lupe let someone down by not being enough. It wouldn’t be the last, either.

“Really?” She asked, playing along for Delilah’s sake. Then again, it wouldn’t exactly be shocking that something was roaming around while they were trying to spend time together. Leave it up to the local supernatural community to spoil something for Lupe -- as usual. “Maybe we should head somewhere with more people then. I wouldn’t want us to, y’know, get our heads bit off by a werewolf or turn into a vampire’s snack.

Shoving her hands into her back pockets, Lupe surveyed a bit of the area, poking around bushes and checking behind trees for any actual sign of trouble. It was mostly her own excuse to act as if she believed Delilah, if only to avoid any uncomfortable discussions. “Maybe Bambi heard you and decided to take you up on the offer”?

“So am I!” Nova joined in her giggling “you can’t be serious- tell me you’ve at least drunkenly made out with one or two of them, a weird sex dream, something!” After they simmered down and she caught her breath she said “that’s sound logic though, you get kinda tunnel vision  when you first start seeing someone new right? You become like, obsessed.” Not that the feeling was too familiar to her, she tended not to have too many romantic leanings, but young women liked to bond over flaky things like feelings. “I guess that’s fair, sometimes in a tight knit group it can really cause shit.” 

Which was one of the reasons Nova liked having a wide net of friends in different circles. They didn’t interact so often, it wasn’t likely that they’d discuss conflicting stories they’d heard from her. (She tried not to tell conflicting stories anyway, bad practice.) and generally it made life easier. “Yeah, it’s like when is it about something real and when does it become some weird like, possessive thing y’know? Like ‘oh you can’t date her she’s my friend’ and are you really gonna let bullshit like that dictate who you see?” Not that Nova really had the right to preach about family hate with all the siblings she’d killed. “I’m sure if you tell him whats what and give him some time it will work out okay.”

It was nice to hear exactly what she wanted to, and Lupe admittedly felt inclined to believe whatever Nova was telling her for that reason alone. Having another woman’s opinion was refreshing as well, given she didn’t have too many gal pals to turn to for advice. With every word to come out of Nova’s mouth, Lupe simply nodded along in agreement, feeling herself getting just a little upset at what she was implying.

“Yeah, you’re right,” she agreed, frowning slightly. “I shouldn’t let him tell me who I can and can’t date -- that’s my decision, not his. Maybe I’ll take your advice and give him a piece of my mind. Actually, maybe I should just tell him how awesome his cousin is and push him toward giving her a second chance. If she even wants that, but something tell me she will for my sake. She’s really cool like that; she’d take my feelings into consideration.”

delilah scrunched her nose at lupe as she sprayed the water in her face, she wiped it off with a tiny smile and looked at the girl with a small eye roll. for a split second she found herself wishing life could be this easy all the time, she was happy with lupe like this. she was probably the best and most genuine friend that delilah had ever had, and spending time with her was like a breath of fresh air.

as lupe explained what the plants and trees were and where they were best suited to grow the smile on delilah’s face widened. “well, i have another question for you,” delilah said quietly and suggestively as she took lupe’s hand lightly and pulled her underneath the tree. she leaned her back against the trunk and let her hands wrap around lupe’s waist, “is the acer macrophyllum a good tree to make-out under?” she asked before she leaned in and pressed a kiss to the girl’s jawline.

At first, Lupe was caught off guard when she was pulled beneath the tree, not quite putting two and two together. However, everything clicked into place once she could feel Delilah’s arms sliding around her waist, drawing her flush against the blonde’s body. Though Lupe had been the one to ask for a slow pace, she couldn’t help but grin when she felt Delilah’s lips against her jawline. It was far too tempting, especially since they seemed to have the forest all to themselves...

“As long as my co-workers don’t find us making out,” she snorted. “Not that I’d get in trouble or anything, but can you imagine how awkward that conversation would be?” Bringing her arms up over Delilah’s shoulders, Lupe leaned forward and stole a quick, chaste kiss. “Or even worse -- Bambi and his mom might catch us. That’s definitely a mood killer, huh?”

“That’s fair. Demons have a way of taking down the general mood a notch or two. A power or coincidence? We may never know.” Matty chuckled at his own joke. As much as he tried to keep a positive attitude, when it came to demons Matty struggled to keep the sunny outlook that he was so well known for. The longer he was in Mystery Inc., the more difficult it was becoming to remain hopeful that there was any possibility of good within them.

It was a relief to hear that Lupe had a normal problem. Though he loved Mystery Inc., the break from problems surrounding vampires, demons, mermaids, and fairies was a welcomed change. A smile unintentionally appeared across his face and though he tried to wipe it off as soon as he realized it, he was almost positive Lupe noticed. “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to smile. It’s just that I can’t think of the last time I had a conversation about normal problems with someone.” It made his heart a little lighter just thinking about having a regular conversation about normal problems; the kind of problems that people in Small Town, Indiana and Big City, California had too. 

“Kind of.” Matty answered. “Not personally but I know of her.” He nodded along as he listened, fully focusing his attention on her. “Are you worried about Nolan’s reaction to you having feelings for her or am I way off base? Is she not a relationship person? I don’t want to pry but you’re going to have to give me a little more than that.”

Though the issue with Delilah was definitely something that worried her, Lupe had to admit that Matty had a point. For once, they weren’t hunched over the table quietly gossiping about the latest supernatural news or discussing Mystery Inc’s latest plans. Her biggest problem was happening to like her friend’s cousin -- which, all things considered, Matty might know about firsthand. Sure, this didn’t make her situation any better, but at least this was a normal, human problem that could probably be solved without wooden stakes.

“I’m definitely worried about Nolan’s reaction,” she confirmed. “I don’t see him as the type to make a big deal out of it, but that’s also probably wishful thinking on my part. The thing is? Delilah is, like, nowhere near as bad as Nolan made her out to be. No sooner had she slumped down in her seat than their waitress came by to take their order, and Lupe seemed to perk back up at the thought of food. “I want two bacon cheeseburgers, an order of fries, and a large Coke,” she quickly blurted out, glancing over at Matty. “Wanna split a slice of pie afterwards?”

“No big d— Lupe, your hand looks like a mangled twig.” Jess gasped in shock and horror, sure that if there was better light right now, the girl’s fingers probably would be turning black and blue. Vividly, Jess thought back to the hard fall she’d taken some summers ago with Nolan where her shoulder had popped out. The pain had been excruciating until she’d gotten it shoved back into place. Completely oblivious to the fact they had a warlock in their midst, Jess was already going into panic first aid mode. If they made it fast to the ER, Leah might still be in the vicinity. Otherwise, Nolan knew how to make a good splint, she knew that. Endless ideas flew through her mind as she helped Lupe gather to her feet.

Hearing Lupe react to the warlock, Jess’s hands came in front of her in a quick and defensive, “Lupe, no—” simply given that they didn’t have to fear him, he’d helped them. In fact, if the situation hadn’t been so dire, Jess was pretty sold that this guy was cool in his own right even without the fact he was magical. Watching Lupe quarrel with him, Jess’s gut churned, looking towards the bridge that was still dripping bits of debris into the river. If they didn’t take his out ( Hell, she didn’t drive or have a car anyway ) then there was a chance that demon would bust out of the rubble like Jason from Camp Crystal Lake. And Jess wanted to avoid that frankly.

“We need to go,” She urged finally, looking back at Lupe with a look that read trust me. “We need to go now and we need to get your hand strapped up.”

Still running on adrenaline, Lupe knew her injuries were going to feel far more painful in a matter of minutes. She was giving herself three, maybe five minutes until the pain was unbearable and knew her hand might be well beyond repair, so the potential ride to the hospital was looking a little too good. And given the warlock had actually helped her, along with the fact Jess was urging her, Lupe was more inclined to relent and accept the help -- just this once, of course.

“I can fix her hand once we get to my car,” Roman piped up, nearly wincing when he got a look at just how mangled it was. “And maybe then you can explain how the hell you managed to piss off a demon this badly, alright?” Without waiting for a response, he set off back down the path they’d come, and Lupe motioned for Jess to accompany her behind the warlock. 

It didn’t take too long to reach his car -- a Jeep, which made Lupe feel just a little bit better. The entire trek there, Lupe kept glancing over her shoulder to make sure Hugo wasn’t following them and hissed as her injury finally started kicking in. Once they reached the car, Lupe was cradling her hand against her chest and trying to fight the tears back.

“Okay, first I’m gonna need you two to hop into the back,” Roman instructed, shamelessly putting his backpack -- still containing his cat -- in the front seat. “Salem gets dibs on shotgun. Then I can take a look at both of you to make sure you’re not about to drop dead.”

delilah smiled at lupe, it was something she often caught herself doing around the other girl. she hadn’t ever had someone like lupe in her life before. sure she had people that had pursued her, and she had even dated a couple people in high school. but they were always short-lived and mostly lustful, but lupe seemed to be different. it wasn’t a chore to spend time with her, she actually found herself enjoying herself around her. it was strange, and delilah was worried that she might get too attached to her when all she had intended for in the beginning was to get information. but if things continued the way they did, she might need to explore a change of heart.

“i’d love to keep testing you,” delilah said with a mischievous grin, she spotted a small grouping of flowers poking out of the ground near the base of a tree by them. she nodded her head over towards it, “what about those ones?” she asked. she knew what they were and she was sure lupe did too, but it was cute to see her get all excited about it. it was easy to tell that lupe was really in her element out in the woods.

Honestly, after everything she endured alongside the rest of the gang, Lupe could use someone like Delilah. Whenever they were together, it felt like an escape from the dangerous stunts and secretive behavior required of her to be part of Mystery Inc. And even after being with the group for a couple years, part of her still felt like she didn’t entirely belong. With Delilah, there wasn’t anything to belong to; they just got along naturally, and Delilah always seemed to have a compliment ready to go. Lupe needed that more than she’d care to admit. 

Eyes following Delilah’s gesture, Lupe studied the flowers by the base of the tree with a critical eye. “That’s periwinkle,” she finally replied, giving a firm nod of her head. Standing to her feet, she wiped her hands off on the side of her shorts, though not before sprinkling some water in Delilah’s direction. “They grow on steep hillsides or banks and grow perfectly under or next to trees -- which is an acer macrophyllum, better known as the Oregon maple.”

“Well I will take hot in whatever form it comes in.” Nova laughed, sipping her drink. “You’d never sleep with any of your friends? You need some better friends.” She quipped, fluffing up her hair. Of course, she was the type who made friends by sleeping with people, so perhaps she had a bias of her own the other way. Still a big part of the goal was suddenly to make friends with Lupe and then sleep with her, just to get some strange satisfaction out of proving her wrong.

Ah, slight misfire. But she could chose different words, be more careful with her phrasing. A situation like this it’d be easy to turn her against one or the other. Her mystery girl was trying to pull her away from her friends. Her best friend was trying to pull her away from her girl. Would depend what the both of them were like ultimately as to which angle she played. “It just sounds like so far he hasn’t even given the two of you a chance, y’know? And having your troubles is one thing, but years long grudges with family? I’m sorry, but it reaches a point where that’s nothing more than petty stubborn bullshit. I think you’re right, he has to come around.”

“I’m serious!” Lupe giggled. “I just don’t see any of them like that. Maybe it’s because I’m so into this chick right now?” There was also the issue of causing problems should a relationship in the group end disastrously. With her lack of confidence and luck, Lupe was positive she’d wind up causing issues by getting into a relationship with a friend who’d inevitably get tired of her. “I’m also not super desperate for a relationship, so I’m not really gonna try shacking up with a friend when I can just wait for the right person to come along.”

It felt good to let everything off of her chest, especially when it came to Delilah and Nolan. It was even better that Nova was telling her everything she’d hoped to hear. “That’s totally what I was thinking too,” she agreed. “I get if they don’t see eye to eye on certain things, but to hate someone in your family and willingly tell other people how awful they are? I just don’t see how he could hate her this much. If you can see it, maybe he will too one day.”

delilah was glad to hear that she wasn’t completely closed off to fairies, but she figured it didn’t fare well for her that she had hid her species from lupe for so long. “well, even though they really messed with you it might be good to keep your mind open. i’m sure they’re not all bad,” she told lupe with a tiny shrug. delilah knew that most fairies were nice, it was just unfortunate that lupe had gotten off on the wrong foot with some of the more devious ones. and delilah definitely put herself in the category of fairies that weren’t all that great, and she had no idea how lupe would react when she found out.

when lupe crouched down delilah let her hand drop from the other girl’s and as she dipped her fingers in the water delilah let her hands run loosely through lupe’s dark hair. lupe’s knowledge was definitely impressive, and delilah raised her eyebrows in approval. “wow, that was simultaneously the dorkiest and hottest thing you’ve ever said,” she said with a small laugh. if delilah could have it her way she would start making out with lupe right there on the edge of the river, but the other girl wanted to take it slow and delilah wanted to keep her trust. “i’m impressed, you definitely weren’t lying when you said you knew a lot about the plants out here.”

Though her negative opinion on fairies was crystal clear, Lupe hoped that Delilah never had to see the crueler side of the species. Truthfully, Lupe just wanted Delilah to keep her distance from all things supernatural. Having witnessed the darkness that consumed West Hollow made Lupe eager to keep those closest to her protected -- at least, those outside Mystery Inc. She and her friends could handle themselves more or less, but Delilah didn’t look like she’d last very long against one of the resident ‘baddies’ in town. 

She was thankful for the change in topic, more than willing to focus on her knowledge of the local fauna than anything supernatural or otherwise. The fingers gently carting through her hair eased any nerves that’d lingered, and she was back to being a much happier version of herself as she finally stood to her feet. 

“I could recite a couple dozen poems about nature if you want,” she teased, nudging their hips together. “Unless you want to keep this game up and test me a couple more times. I can name pretty much everything in the forest, give or take a couple trees.”

“Well, I’ll definitely keep that in mind but even if she wasn’t very nice I don’t think that I’d ever want to see her roughed up or with a wild animal in her office. That sounds dangerous.” Even so, Matty enjoyed the sentiment that Lupe wanted to look out for him. It was sweet, even if he didn’t need protecting. “Maybe we can play a prank on her if it ever comes to that. A harmless and silly prank. Mildly inconveniencing at most.” 

Matty picked up a menu and glanced at it, just to check if he brought enough to also have a side of fries. “Go for it! I’m sure you worked up quite the appetite. Besides, have you ever known me to judge before?” Matty raised an eyebrow. It seemed like a timely question since Lupe seemed to be in need of a judgment-free zone. He couldn’t think of another reason Lupe would come to him over other people that they knew. “Demons have a way of ruining a lot of things. What is it you need my opinion on? Is it something with the demon?” His eyes widened as he tried to backtrack, “If it is, I’m not judging you. I’m just curious. That’s all. I don’t judge anyone. I promise.” 

This was why Lupe knew she could turn to Matty. She wanted to stuff her face with two burgers and he wasn’t even batting an eye, nor was he going to sit there silently judging her for the appetite she’d worked up. Honestly, sometimes she wondered what she did to ever deserve a friend like Matty, let alone everyone else in their little group. 

“I try not to think too much about any demons when I don’t have to,” she snorted behind her menu, trying to decide on which burgers to pick out. It’d probably do her some good to at least talk about her run-in with Hugo and try coping with it, but she’d rather pull out her own teeth than rehash that painful memory. “I actually have a normal, human problem I need your opinion on.”

Finally placing her menu down and deciding on her order, Lupe’s gaze lingered around the other diner-goers and kept an eye out for whoever their waiter might be. “You know about Nolan’s cousin, right?” She suddenly asked, fingernails anxiously tapping against the table. “The one I asked him about that one time? Said I was only asking for a friend? Well, I may or may not have been asking for myself, and I may or may not be catching feelings for her.”
