Not trying to convince you in any way, I'm just curious, what is it about Reddit and Twitter that you don't like?
It’s more about what I enjoy about Tumblr that keeps me here. Follower count doesn’t matter, which significantly reduces influencing. Scrapbook style page allows for the collection of liked things as well as the display of created things. Tumblr is unique in that it still allows you to only see what you’ve asked to see (i.e. content from the people you follow) and you can toggle on and off an algorithm-based feed. It’s still decently active with a wider user base than fringe networks.
It’s not owned by Elon Musk.
As for the downsides of the other platforms… Reddit splits everything you make into subreddits. This makes my interaction with community fractured, if any at all. The people on NSFW Reddit are generally vile. Having a good interaction is exceedingly rare. If you don’t match a subreddit’s specific rules, you can’t post. Many require verification prior to participation. And for what? It’s a drag. I cannot be bothered to fit everyone’s rules and molds for the reward of upvotes and vile DMs.
Twitter/X has a character limit. Everyone’s trying to make the latest quip or hot take. Everything’s for engagement, good or bad. It’s a feed, not a collection. Creative work is a blip that vanishes into the void of endless short form posts. I like to write. Also: Elon Musk.
“Why not join [fringe social media network]?” Because this is my home, and I like it here better than other places. I have community here. I’m likely to pretty much vanish if Tumblr shuts down. I tried to exist other places when they kicked me out in 2018, but everything else felt wrong. So fuck it, honestly.
