Whenever people bleat and whine about the “invisibility” of trans men, I think about Heated Rivalry. The biggest show of the year had a trans man, Harrison Browne, cast in a prominent role where he appeared in multiple episodes and had a good handful of lines. Following the show he had a bunch of articles written about his role and the importance of trans inclusion, including one on CNN.

Heated Rivalry also features a trans actress. In one scene, in one episode, the one where Rose is getting her makeup done on set. The actress’s name is Miss Niki Nikita, her character is not given a name. She is given one line, with only one word: “Same.” Trying to track down the name of this actress requires you to dig through the guts of Google search results, and still the main thing that comes up is a reddit post where someone credits her. (Googling “heated rivalry trans woman” still just returns results on Harrison Browne.)

When you say “trans men are invisible” do you just mean that online spaces are constantly trying to raise awareness for the violence trans women face? Because from where I’m standing, trans men get to experience the joy and the limelight while trans women get the violence and the vitriol. But sure, I guess they’re “too visible.”

Cambridge professor of sociology Jason Arday is accused of plagiarism by another academic

the accuser is a "race realist" who believes that in a true meritocracy all university professors would be white. this is somehow not acknowledged much during the entire ordeal

this leads to several days of media coverage demanding an investigation, or that Arday is expelled from his post immediately

somehow this accusation that has no effect on the lives of 99.99% of the population becomes FRONT PAGE NEWS in all the newspapers for multiple days, above anything else happening in the UK or the world at large

following intense media scrutiny, Arday resigns his post as a Cambridge professor

today, august 14th, days after resigning, Arday is found dead at his home in Battersea

the British tabloid press remains, and will always be, fucking evil

Went to google more news about professor Jason Arday, and I swear to God the first two pages of research are rancid propaganda sites smearing the man's reputation, up to and including popular Brazilian news magazine Veja.

The rest of the story unfolds pretty much as described. And he was a fucking Sociologist studying racial equity in schools and academia. They publicly bullied a black autistic man to suicide for being imperfect whilst asserting a place for blackness in academia.

We have had so many prolific serial killers in the U.S. who got away with it for decades because the people they were killing were sex workers, in the throes of addiction, people of color, members of the LGBT community and/or children who were ‘runaways’, the kinds of people the police believe are better off dead. They will say “We need police to protect us, cops have such an important job, we can’t abolish/defund them.” while the police aid, conceal and commit crimes and ignore the families of victims begging for help. It is monstrous.

I hope the friends and families of the 4+ women known to have disappeared in connection with this house get to lay their loved ones to rest, I hope Philadelphia PD is held accountable and they are forced to answer some very difficult questions very soon.

It's really frustrating and bleak that transfemmes are getting picked apart so much that in order to justify our existences we are having to start with like. Metaphysics and epistemology. And I mean like the very fundamental goddamn basics of metaphysics and epistemology. I feel like we would have to begin arguments by discussing questions like "why is there something rather than nothing" and "cognito ergo sum" and fuckin'... Allegory of the Cave type of shit, and then we have to take that shit to "what is gender?" and then we have to take it to "what is sex?" and then we have to take it to "what is oppression? what is misogyny? what is the entire history of medicine in three minutes?" and then and then and then, we have to have all those motherfucking conversations just to begin talking about what being a transfem is like and what specific problems we face and why other people should care about us.

But even if we did go to all that effort to explain our positions we'd still probably get another heaping pile of "you're dividing the community! you should be kissing instead of infighting! the state hates us all equally! stop playing oppression olympics!" like we always do.
