I'm a BIG fan of low ranking characters suddenly thrust into a position of authority they're unprepared for. a young princess, too far down the line of succession to merit any training, forced onto the throne when her whole family dies in one attack. a lowly technician on a team who finds themself the defacto leader when a mission goes wrong and every single person above them is captured or killed. a group of strangers comes together for survival, and the only person with any assertiveness gets assigned a leadership role, even though they have no special skills. do these characters rise to the challenge and lead their respective groups to victory? do they crash and burn under the pressure so hard no one ever trusts them again? do they massively restructure their whole society because any system that puts them in charge can't be doing things right?
wAiT I'm confused, did the Lord Chancellor know iolanthe was a fairy before her banishment and their separation?? Or did he only find out when they were reunited??? Bc I feel like he already knew but idkk 😭

My considered opinion (which I have posted about at Some Point) is that his early exchanges with the Fairy Queen suggest that he is learning about fairies for the first time: "it seems that she's a fairy / from Andersen's library" - that's not a man who knew that fairies were real before right now. He does not, for instance, say: "it seems that she's a fairy / like the girl I chose to marry." He also doesn't seem to know about the law against fairies marrying mortals, because the moment he finds out he changes. And he's on board with the notion that she's Just Too Young to be who she claims to be: "I didn't see her face but if they fondled one another / and she's but seventeen, I don't believe it was his mother." If he's aware of the existence of fairies and their ways, that wouldn't necessarily be a deal-breaker for him (although it's already mediated away from by the presumed fondling so maybe).
Anyway, it's a very different encounter if he understands the Fairy Queen as the woman who murdered his wife - nor does she know who he is. But if they did, well, it would indeed display, madam, shocking taste...

Also (I'm going to yap more abt this lol) how would iolanthe have hidden her fairy-ness (fairyhood?) from the Lord Chancellor? It seems they were together for a while, and are also implied to.. Have some more 𝓲𝓷𝓽𝓲𝓶𝓪𝓽𝓮 moments together (I.e. Strephon 😭😭)(unless ✨fairy magic✨ was involved and she just magically became pregnant??)
Would he have just like. Assumed she's weird and has wings?? Or did she hide them? Ig she could have used ✨fairy magic✨but that seems like a lot of effort? Idk tho lol
Okay I was thinking about the wings and it's honestly weird that no one clocks them. The wings are in a the costuming and you would think this would allow people to immediately recognize who is a fairy and who isn't, right? But no one every realizes the fairies are fairies until thru say so. It would have really defused the whole Why Are You Talking To Another Woman thing if anyone had been like "look at her she's got wings!"
But we know they do have wings and other people can in principle perceive them from the cut song "fold your flapping wings"
But okay Strephon doesn't have wings, or doesn't appear to, and he really should if he's a fairy from the waist up. The wings tend to fall above the waist after all.
Okay I am wildly drifting but has anyone thought to play Strephon as intersex? That is, since all the fairies are women, Strephon is (among other things) female from the waist up and male from the waist down.
Okay Strephon says explicitly that he's concealing his fairy nature from his bride - it would make sense that Iolanthe is doing the same, especially since her marriage is illegal. We know that fairies can become Very Small, so they must have a lot of personal control over their bodily presentation. Presumably for the duration of her courtship and marriage Iolanthe is shapeshifted into human size and shape?
(But why does she consistently veil if she can turn herself invisible at will?)
I am chewing on this. What I keep coming back to is that everyone is consistently Very Bad at noticing when other people are fairies, until or unless they are explicitly told - even when those people come on stage singing "enter all the little fairies"
Actually isn't "Fold your Flapping Wings" Strephon's song, not the peers'? That makes a difference. Because what I am thinking now is that fairies existing is hard for the human mind to hang on to. Like, the peers are surprised and frustrated when Strephon is wildly successful in parliament and the "fairies are like well yeah we're using magic on the MPs." This comes as News even though they told them exactly what they were gonna do in the Act I finale. And it seems to slide off the peers again - they say "this is what comes of women interfering on politics." They are incapable of engaging with them as fairies.
So now I am thinking that the fairies exude some kind of glamour that makes it very hard to notice (and to remember) that they aren't human even while they're singing choruses about it in public. Strephon has a fairy brain so he doesn't count, but it just slides right off a human brain.

So it's been a while since we did Les Mis Letters and maybe this is contradicted by some detail in the book, but here's what I think would be fun: you know that thing where you grow up thinking that something is, like, a Widely Acknowledged Gender Role Thing and actually it turns out it's just your specific parents that it's true of? like "oh yeah women stereotypically love birdwatching" but actually it's just that your individual mom loves birdwatching and your dad doesn't. And how many formative years does Cosette spend knowing (a) nuns (b) schoolgirls and (c) Jean Valjean? And Jean Valjean is like superhumanly strong, everyone knows this. It would be really funny if, based on that, Cosette just has a wildly exaggerated concept of how physically strong men as a group are. And later she's like "Marius please hold this cartful of heavy rocks for me real quick? 🥺" and he has to be like "no one can do that"
Actually, after thinking about Marius Pontmercy, and the way that he is and the things that he does, I think there’s a very good chance he says nothing at all and this scenario ends with him squished.

i mean i do understand that on some basic level mean girls is somewhat a julius caesar retelling but it’s not enough we can do better. sororities and toga parties are RIGHT THERE. julie just led her sisters to victory at the 24 hour danceathon for charity. but cass is concerned she’s getting a big head after many of the other girls express their willingness for julie to name herself president even though they’ve vowed not to have one. so cass enlists (seduces?) julie’s (platonic?) best friend brooke for help……

Apparently there was NOT, there WAS Robespierre but he was unsuccessful in overthrowing the Queen of the Ballpit, was guillotined and came back dressed as Napoleon. Fascinating. I don’t think I really understand Dashcon.
