something I've been trying to do lately when reading people's opinions or perspectives about various things, is not to be trying to determine the whole time whether or not I Agree With What They're Saying. I try to frame it like I'm learning about someone else's perspective rather than reading statements in order to evaluate whether or not they align with my understanding of the world. I can certainly do that, and I certainly do examine things and think about if I think they're a valuable way on which to change how I have been thinking about something. ive started trying to begin from a place of "it makes sense that this would be your perspective" and think about it from there. this is a value neutral fact to pin people's statements on: it makes sense that you would feel this way, it makes sense that you would respond to something this way. it's explicitly not "your reaction/opinion Makes Perfect Sense" as in "everyone's opinion is equally valid" or whatever. it's "given the experiences you have had up to this point, it makes sense that this is your perspective on this at the moment"

this also has the knock on benefit of allowing me to look back at myself and think, yeah, before learned more about this or that subject, it MADE SENSE that I said this or that about it. it made sense that i believed such and such thing until I learned more about it. this isn't an excuse because it's not assigning value -- it can make sense for people to say or do absolutely terrible shit, it can make sense for people's experiences in the world to cause them to view reality in a way that is incompatible with my own. people still hold responsibility for the things they say or do and the impact that has on others. I think we bear a responsibility to listen and learn as much as we can about the world so that we can expand the ways in which it makes sense for us to understand things.
