Report: Next Apple Media Event Is October 4th, To Star Tim Cook And The iPhone 5
After months of leaks and speculation, it seems as if Apple is finally ready to unveil its next iPhone. AllThingsDĀ pegs the announcement dateĀ as October 4th, which falls in line with most of the previous rumors concerning the next iPhoneās fall rollout.
With Steve Jobs gone, his hand-groomed successor Tim Cook is expected to take over the dog and pony show. Appleās future likely hinges more on his on-stage presence than just a piece of hardware.
Steve Jobs is a masterful salesman. He previously used his keynote addresses to show the world why they wanted his latest toy. He would pull the product out of his pocket, pull back a black sheet or simply stand in front of a massive screen and, even for just a few moments, make the most mundane feel life-changing. That was the power of Steve Jobs: his passion alone drove sales. Surely if Steve likes it, then we will, countless Apple loyalists said after each Applenote.
But Timās in charge now. Heās at the helm of Appleās massive machine and to delegate the role of chief Apple spokesperson to anyone else would undercut his own role completely. During Steve Jobsā medical leave, Phil Schiller took over the keynotes for Macworld and WDC, but per AllThingsDās source, Tim is going to take the stage and announce the next iPhone. It is, after all, his company now and he has massive New Balances to fill.
Tim should have some help, though. Steve Jobs rarely did keynotes alone. Expect department heads and marketing people to play wingman and help Tim Cook along.
October 4th. Thatās (reportedly) the day that Apple will move into the Tim Cook era with a little help from the iPhone 5.
Rumor: Sprint To Sell iPhone 5 In October
As we once again enter the iPhone 5 breach, one would do well to keep their grains of salt at the ready, but theĀ Business InsiderĀ reports that Sprint will be among the few carriers to sell the iPhone 5.
The news is something of a coup for Sprint, the nationās third largest wireless service provider. If true, it could provide a stay of execution for a company that would otherwise be facing Verizon and AT&T/T-Mobile without a Cupertino trump card. Sprintās stock has already jumped due to the news, although at last glance it seems to be returning to pre-announcement levels.
Like Verizon, the backbone of Sprintās network runs on the CDMA standard. Rather than manufacture a different iPhone for each carrier, the possibililty of Sprint selling the iPhone 5 lends a bit of credence to news of the deviceāsĀ dual-network nature.
Sources also report that instead of the hoped-for September release window, the iPhone 5 may instead see the light of day later in October.
This story is currently developing, please refresh for updates as they happen.
Update:Ā TheĀ Wall Street Journalās articleĀ has gone live, and has fleshed out a few of the more salient details: the iPhone 4 will reportedly be sold alongside the iPhone 5 on Sprint. Additionally, what scant details WSJ has on the iPhone 5ā²s appearance indicate that the new handset will ābe thinner and lighter with an improved digital camera.ā

How Appropriate, Pampers Mobile Ad Promoted On Sex App
There is a lot of mobile ad inventory out there and sometimes brands canāt be sure where their ads will appear. Just like on the Web, automated ad placements can sometimes turn up in the darndest places. Take a look at the Pampers ad at the bottom of this screenshot for a popular app calledĀ 300+ Sex Positions.
It is an ad cross-promoting Pamperās ownĀ Hello Baby app. The copy reads: āDiscover the wonders of babys development with Pamperās Hello Baby app.ā Hello Baby, indeed.
The Pampers app appropriately enough is a pregnancy calendar that might come in handy if you try some of the sex positions in the first app. But I really wonder whether Pampers and its parent company Proctor & Gamble want their ads appearing in this context. It just isnāt P&G enough.
This isnāt just any add either. It is one of Appleās own iAds. If you squint your eyes, you can see a watermark in the lower righthand corner. What do you think, was this ad placement intentional or a big mistake? Anyone from Pampers out there who can enlighten us on the marketing strategy here?
Google+ iPhone App Now Live In The App Store (Screenshots)
Google+ās iPhone app is now live in the App Store, and you can download the free appĀ here.
From Googleās description of the app,Ā Google+ for mobile makes sharing the right things with the right people a lot simpler. Huddle lets you send super-fast messages to the people you care about most. And no matter where you are, the stream lets you stay in the loop about what your friends are sharing and where theyāre checking in.
Similar to the web product, Google+ for iPhone includes Circles, your stream of updated from contacts, and Huddle, for group messaging in your circles.
While theĀ Google+ Android appĀ was ready to go on day one, the Google+ iPhone app had remained in review with Apple. Until now, iPhone users have had to access aĀ mobile web versionĀ of Google+ in Safari, which wasnāt nearly as feature-filled as the Android app.
It appears that the iPhone app and Android app are fairly similar in functionality except for the instant upload feature that is included in the Android app. Instant Upload automatically uploads videos and photos to your Google+ album in the cloud. Additionally, the app doesnāt support iOS 5 yet.
As Larry PageĀ told us last week,Ā Google+ now has has over 10 million users who have created profiles (after two weeks), and these users are sharing and receiving 1 billion items per day.
UPDATE:Ā Many readers have commented that the app is freezing. Google has responded to some of these concernsĀ here.
