I’ve never really done one of these before; but felt like making one xD
“Disclaimer”: This is just the way I’ve done it, I don’t claim to be an expert or anything. Feel free to modify the specifics if anyone bases their painting on this. Also, I wanted to include more pictures (to better show it) but there seems to be a limit on tumblr, so I’ve reduced the number of pictures to these.
1. Decide on how large you want the painting to be, and in what shape. Here I’ve decided on a circle and so drew a circle outline in pencil.
2. I started with blue paint. First by outlining the circle with the paint (dry brush), before dipping the brush in water and brushing it inwards so that the blue fades to a lighter tone. This is so that the edges are darker in tone than the center.
3. I wanted the galaxy “background” to have a mix of colours, not just blue. Other colours I’ve used for the background include red purple and purple, as well as black later on.
For this I did something similar as in step 2. Paint the colour with the dry brush (where I decide I want it to be more concentrated), then blend with the brush wet. I’ve blended the red purple and purple with the blue background here.
4. Next, as decided beforehand, I added black to the painting, doing similar steps as in 2 and 3 (blending etc).
5. For this I used a flat paintbrush that’s damp and dipped in into white paint. It has to be able to splatter. Then I’d run my finger quickly up the side of the brush as pictured. The splatters create the stars in the galaxy.
6. Besides the smaller stars, I wanted larger stars in the foreground. To do this I began with making larger white dots. I used a dotting pen for this (which I have because of an interest in nail art), but it can be created with a small paintbrush as well.
7. Paint a ring around the dots in 6. The colour of the ring will depend on your preference for what you want the “glow” of those stars to be. I chose the pinkish purple from earlier on and a light blue for mine.
8. (Semi-optional) For this step I’ve added some “embellishments”, and outlined my circle with gold paint, but that’s my preference :)

Brushes: *I’d recommend using ones you prefer. I think the ones I used were paint brushes for kids (HAHA).
