The two first species created, and the two baseline species, humans and animalfolk were made to both be very generalist species... Unfortunately, something went wrong with the creation of humans,
Animalfolk are made of roughly equal parts meat and magic, but humans were made without any magic in them whatsoever, relying on electrical signals instead of magic. But, being made of meat meant that unless they had magic coming from an outside source, like a patron, or from witchcraft, humans were completely unable to use magic, and they were unable to heal from physical damage nearly as easily as animalfolk, meaning that they were relatively easy to harm, causing several of the first humans to accidentally get killed, as the animalfolk saw violence as something fun and fairly harmless...
To remedy this, and get the two on roughly equal footing, humans were given several boons
They were granted generally higher physical abilities, especially Speed, Stamina and Luck, but their Strength and Endurance were also naturally higher, though their heartbeat was unable to be raised alongside the others.
They were also granted latent psychic abilities, that could both be used on their own (Unlike magic), and also be used to cast spells in place of magic. Unfortunately, few humans were able to actually USE this psychic power, so human minds were modified to be better at grasping science and math, giving them enhanced skills in Medicine, Technology, and other fields.
And lastly, two extra traits were given based on their high levels of Meat. They were granted the ability to eat several non-food items with little to no health repercussions, like moss, gunpowder, chalk, and more. They were also granted a pool of extra heartbeat they tap into after hitting 0, allowing them a chance to heal and regenerate during or after a fight, lowering the mortality of humans. After this, it was finally deemed enough...
Though, despite all of this, animalfolk aren't entirely invincible. Due to having magic in their bodies, sometimes when experiencing extreme emotional distress (Especially Fear and Sorrow), they will just, stop continuing to function, they also have a weakness to poison, Especially certain kinds. Another effect of their magic contents, though not necessarily a negative one, when they die, they melt into a pile of blood, though unlike the blood that runs through (almost) all species, this blood has extra levels of magic
