essek blinks in surprise at the sensation of lips on the bridge of his nose , craning his neck to peer at jester , brows lifted in curiosity . his gaze darts down to the infant in his arms , a little red tiefling with chubby cheeks and the tiniest hands he has ever seen , and his heart swells . the word ‘ niece ’ flickers across his mind , and his chest tightens ; years ago , he had been prepared to die at the hands of the dynasty , of the cerberus assembly , of the mighty nein . and now ... jester lavorre places her newborn daughter in his arms and calls him the little girl’s uncle .
he smiles at jester , eyes brimmed with unshed tears that he does not bother attempting to blink away . “ she is beautiful , jester . you must be so proud . ”

he has never attended a harvest close festival before . granted , such an event did not exist in xhorhas , and it was rather difficult to celebrate harvest in a country so desolate and void of vegetation to begin with . under his disguise ( a red tiefling , warm golden eyes and curled horns that are reminiscent of a mother-daughter duo he knows ) he openly marvels at the sight of the bustling crowds , the stalls of food , handmade trinkets , games , and sighs in pure wonder . how strange it is , that he is so easily captivated by the sight of a festival like this .
a familiar blue arm curls around his to link them together , and he glances down to smile at jester , gently tugging her closer to steer her towards the game stall that caleb and fjord have landed upon . “ do you reckon that either of them will win this game , or will they be wasting their coin ? ”

the beach is not quite essek’s favourite place to be ... at least in broad daylight . it is beautiful and quite pleasant at all times , but the midday sun is bright and warm and oh-so-painful for his eyes . he had placed his floppy sunhat on and joined the group in the water for some time , but there was only so much time he could spend out there with the light reflecting off the ocean before he had to step away and take a break . so he heaves a sigh and collapses on his designated towel , situated perfectly under the large umbrella , and allows his eyes to blissfully slip closed . the exhaustion has already begun to settle into his joints , and he surmises that he will likely be sore come tomorrow morning .
he jumps at the feeling of cool lips pressing against his forehead . his eyes flicker open to peer up at the culprit , and smiles softly when he sees that familiar blue complexion and curled horns of his friend . “ hello jester . do not mind me , i am resting my eyes for now . ”

essek was never reckless before . he had always tread too carefully , too cautious of everything and everyone around him . there were many ways to describe essek , but reckless has never been one of them . and yet , he had not hesitated to fling lightning bolts at the aeorian nullifier to distract it from caleb , who had been knocked prone and lost his sword in the process . he had been terrified , absolutely stricken with fear , but he surprised even himself with how quickly he put himself in harm’s way to give the paladin a moment to recover from the blow . he had taken significant damage in the process of baiting the creature , but he cannot find it in himself to care ; caleb is okay , he’s alive , he’s safe .
a shiver races up his spine as caleb leans in towards him , their mouths pressed together so gently that it makes essek’s heart race . he is so careful , this magical man , the first person he has ever loved , he wants to imprint this moment onto his brain so he may always remember it . essek’s trembling hands reach up to grip the paladin’s scarf tightly , using that shaky hold to keep him close enough to feel his warmth ; he whines when the kiss is broken , but concedes to it . his gaze searches , and his heart clenches at the sight of the other man’s fear , evident in the way his voice shakes . “ i’m sorry . i did not mean to frighten you . ”
