I was wondering: Is Nan autistic, in modern-day terminology? The way she is blunt, struggles to deal (lie, mask, keep up) with the Metropolis etiquette + a bunch of other things have me read her as such, but I was wondering if it was deliberate.
The way this show is about friendship and care and loyalty means a lot to me. Thank you, again.
This is such a wonderful, beautiful note (and an awesome question!). It means a a lot to me that you're enjoying the show, and especially that the themes are meaningful to you!
The more I think about Metropolis, the more I realize that the show is about what it means to care about human beings (and, alternatively, what it means not to care about them).
Nan cares, and she goes alone to a place that does not. Yet once she's there, she is never alone, because even in that place there are people who care the way she does, and they find her and she finds them.
It's funny how sometimes you write the thing and *then* the themes of what you've written become clear. 😂
With regards to your question, Nan's characteristics were something that were pretty well-formed early in the writing process, and certainly many of them can be read as neurodivergent. In terms of an actual diagnosis or label, I actually don't feel qualified to assign it 😂. I know Nan, and I know how to write how she'd think or feel or react to a situation, and I admire the heck out of her even while I'm making her life hell, but I actually don't know if the way she is makes her autistic or not. So if you're listening and she comes off as clearly autistic, then your assessment is probably better than mine.
I realize that's probably an unsatisfying answer! Apologies for taking so dang long on it (as delayed things related to Metropolis are becoming a stock-in-trade at this point 😂). I hope you'll enjoy the conclusion to the show, I know I'm thrilled to get it out, because I think it does give everything a fitting ending.
