I know, I know — it’s been a lot of talk lately. You see it in ads, you hear about it everywhere, and you might already know a little bit about it… but let’s do a quick deep dive before we go any further.
Y’ALL BETTER GO GET YOU THIS REBORN UPDATE!
You can claim yours free99 by getting a redelivery @Mainstore if you’ve already purchased the body or if your body didn’t auto-update.
If you want a PBR-compatible head, Genus also updated their Baby Face W001 head with PBR capabilities. This update is also free99 via redelivery @Mainstore for previous purchasers, or it can be purchased at the eBody event .
NOAWWW… let’s talk about PBR.
First question… WTHelly is PBR?
PBR stands for Physically Based Rendering. It allows a mesh to react to and render lighting from the surrounding environment onto its surface.
These reactions appear as reflections and surface shading, and they’re controlled not only by values set through HUDs, but also by the material information built into the mesh itself (like roughness and metallic properties).
Before PBR, Second Life used Blinn-Phong materials, where most of the “shine” or reflection behavior came from settings created by the artist alone. Things like the sky, water, or nearby objects were not actually reflected on a mesh’s surface — only real light sources (like the sun, moon, or a face light) affected how shiny something looked.
With PBR, meshes now respond to their environment. Bright objects, the sky, and surrounding scenery can appear in reflections — which is how mirrors work now.
Just like in real life:
the sun hits an object → light bounces off → your eyes catch that reflection → your brain says, “Oh, that’s a red apple.”
PBR works the same way. Light interacts with objects in the scene, and your mesh reflects what’s around it based on what it’s made of.
Why do I even need PBR on my head and body?
Simply put: because it’s a more realistic and accurate way for materials to interact with light.
PBR gives us lighting behavior that’s closer to real life, creating a more consistent and immersive visual experience for users — especially for skin, bodies, and fashion.
WHAT IF I DON’T WANT TO USE PBR??
Both the eBody Reborn body and the Genus Baby Face W001 head give you the option to turn PBR off and continue using materials the same way you did before.
What if I want to use eBody PBR with my [XYZ] head?
You can still use the eBody PBR body with another head — however, PBR materials are dependent on the mesh itself.
If the creator of the [XYZ] head hasn’t updated their mesh to support PBR materials, then PBR will not work on that head.
Much like any other big Second Life update, most mesh head and body creators will likely update over time. Suggesting it to your favorite creator isn’t a bad idea — just remember that creators have real lives, other projects, and need time to update at their own pace.
That’s all from me for now!
Of course, stay tuned for future posts… and stay stylish, my loves! 💅🏽
