The phone call comes on a Monday. Of course it does â what business would it have coming on any of the good days, or a day that matters? Roxas has gotten so good at ignoring them that they hardly come anymore. Allowing himself to be lulled into this false sense of security is his unsuspecting folly, because for the first time in over a year, he answers the goddamn phone. Thinking that itâs Axel, or Xion, or Olette â any of the friends heâs made in the recent weeks, the ones who give a damn about him, he thumbs over the accept call button without checking the number.Â
WHO DOESNâT CHECK THE FUCKING NUMBER?Â
His attention is fully on the TV in front of him when he laughs out a cheerful, âHello?â into the receiver. The voice on the other end of the line is none of the people heâs expecting it to be. None of the people he wants it to be. When his mother chokes out his name, the fake one, the one he fucking hates, the one that does not belong to him, Roxasâ breath catches in his throat, and he is helpless to her crying, her begging, her pleading, his father screaming in the background. âCome home, sweetie.â She says. âWe miss you.â She says. âWe only want the best for you.â She says.Â
She says, she says, she says: but she does not mean any of it. Roxas has seen the newspaper headlines. Politicianâs Daughter Flees to California Under the Guise of A Boy. Heâs read the nasty articles online about how heâs âone of those transgendersâ and âhow could her father allow something like that? Why, if that were my kid, Iâd knock some sense into her!â All his parents want, all they care about, is their self image. On and on and on she goes, until finally Roxas canât take it anymore, hanging up the call just in time for Axel to come in through the door.Â

In the back corner of a busy party, such and suchâs house alive with people, the thumping bass pumping out of the stereo deafening, Roxas will admit heâs a little bit tipsy. When he leans in and presses rough, chapped lips to the smooth apple of the girlâs rosy cheek, he delights in the soft gasp she emits. They donât know one another, see, but sheâs cute, and his inhibitions are out the window after a few drinks.
âSurprise!â He cheers, loud enough to be heard over the music. âThe â the cheek kissing fairy has bestowed his blessings upon you!âÂ

x. axel
"Bummer. I actually like my name." Heâs proud of how heâd coined it, using his original backwater name and twisting it into something partially interesting. Lea was the poor Catholic boy, trapped in a house with a God he didnât want and a family that didnât want each other. Axel, on the other hand, didnât squander his time on things that werenât worth the effort. So yeah, itâs a little 80â˛s metal band-esque, but itâs something to hold onto. Itâs why he doesnât question a name like Roxas, as odd as it is, uncommon and never before heard in his current lifetime.
Then comes that loaded question. He even thinks heâs ready to give the hefty answer to it, but rethinks that decision the second it comes to him. Did he want to give out the reason he was blackening his lungs beyond their original organic composition, thoughtfully alone in a park long after the hours say anyone should be on this side of the fence? Just like you canât stop a hurricane on its path, Axel could not just bottle his thoughts up and hand them over, a simplified answer in the palm of his hand. Itâs not a good time, not yet. Theyâre still strangers balancing precariously on the line of becoming almost more and while he could hit the mental rewind and view every single step thatâs brought him to this city, to this skate park, this spot in front of Roxasâ Axel vows to save it for later.Â
Because heâs convinced, at this point, that there will be a next time. Why wouldnât there be? An all powerful deity in the sky didnât set this meeting up, because They didnât exist, but the universal forces that bring unlikely people together do. Fate or whatever the kids called it these days, he wasnât up to date with all the trends. That existed. It was real and it had to have been what possessed this wholly uninterested skater into spilling meaningless commentary that would naturally catch Axelâs interest. This conversation that otherwise would have never happened, did, and it was too late to take it back. On Axelâs side, at the least. Which meant he was going to pursue this, even if all he got in the end was a familiar living body passing the night hours away with him.
It would just be too hard to discard this, all of this. This being what kept his eyes trained on that youthful face, unmarked like his own. Even when the board had noisily hit the ground, he hadnât broken contact to glance at it. Axel was too busy thinking, too busy committing the details of this encounter to memory. He had to speak eventually, though, and if he couldnât yet tell the whole story, heâd tell the truth, as much as that surprised him. âIâm not working tonight and sleep would elude me anyway. Thought Iâd shave off a few more years of my life with the nicotine while I waited for the sun to rise. Gonna kick me out?â
Lips quirk upwards of their own accord, an ease to this manâs presence that creates an unlikely comfort Roxas cannot ignore or fight off. Every part of him aches with the urge to shutdown, retract, step back and reanalyze the situation. Close off with walls up, a steadfast guard to ensure maximum defense. But Roxas does the unwise thing, not for the first time in his short twenty-one years, and chooses to proceed.Â
The streetlamp flickers, Roxas crosses his arms, and the night bleeds for them, the clandestine meeting of two of Satanâs rejects. âI never said I didnât like it.â He does. Like Axelâs name, that is. Ridiculous, as formerly stated, but unique. Simplistic. Something about it matches up to all the piercings lining his ears, the permanency of his tattoos, the clothing, the swirling nicotine cloud that goes floating up when he puffs on his cigarette.Â
They donât know each other (yet) but Roxas likes to think that Axelâs name fits him to a T, down to the bare bones of his essence. âItâs not my place to kick you out. I donât own the park.â Frequents it every single day more naturally than clockwork, sure, but the only thing in this park with his name on it (other than his board) is the old, beaten up quarter pipe on the other side of the park. Heâd tagged it way back when, during his first summer here. The park was new, freshly built, just like Roxasâ new identity, and that quarter pipe had been his best friend for months until the half pipe had gone up and the park plans had started moving along.
Roxas has class tomorrow, knows that he should go home, the same way he knows that he shouldnât be rolling his board under foot to keep his itching body in motion, the way that he shouldnât be curious about Axel, about what he does for a living, how he really passes the time, where heâs from. Millions of blank spaces open up for every passing thought that Roxas allows himself to contemplate over Axel, and suddenly heâs determined to fill in every single one. Axel is an empty scantron, and Roxas is here to study for the final.
A hand passes over his left ear, tugging at the black orbital there. A tic that Roxas picked up just as soon as heâd gotten the piercing in the first place. Not necessarily out of nervousness -- it grounds him. Keeps him tethered to his body, makes him feel real for at least enough time to prevent any unwarranted out of body experiences. Roxas wets his lips. âHow do you feel about nasty, greasy diner food at two in the morning?â The night is hot, the air is stifling, Roxas isnât thinking. Or maybe heâs thinking too much. Both of these pose as a real, honest to god problem.

âSorry, bucko, no can do. Official business - this ramp is off-limits âtil later.â He flashed a grin, patting his pocket as though to signify a badge. It most definitely wasnât a badge, but, nobody needed to know.Â
âCome back later, yeah?â
âIf it were officially off-limits, the owner would have told us.â Roxas shoots back, board gripped loosely in hand. No one said anything about the park being closed today, and there was no sign on the gate indicating otherwise. âIf youâre trying to pull off a drug deal, go somewhere else. The park is a clean zone.â
For the most part, in any case.

@luxumis liked for a starter!
{â} â â Are you sure you can handle it? â came an intrigued inquiry, her paintbrush clutched in her hand as her other hand grasped onto her sketchbook. She had been clad in her apron, seated on a nearby bench, switching between watching him skateboard and resuming her watercolor picture. Apron was a F U T I L E thing to wear as her cheek had some paint smears, alongside her arms when she rolled up her sleeves.Â
â Seems like a dangerous trick in my book. â
Attempts had been made during previous excursions, but today -- today Roxas is certain he can do it. In theory, Hospital Flips arenât difficult. In practice, however. Well. Heâs struggling. The words she fires out at him, though innocent enough, irk him. The blond turns a withering glance upon her, eyes narrowed with frustration. Sheâs been watching him intermittently this whole time, between bouts of painting and splattering herself all over. Itâs a little... unsettling.
âI can do it. Just takes some effort to get the hang of it, thatâs all.â
He tries not to sound petulant, but this trick is R E A L L Y much harder than it had initially seemed.Â
x. stranger
His excitement was absolutely contagious, earning a small laugh out of Xion. Clearly he was right in his element. âSix to seven years is a long time! No wonder youâre so good at it.â Practice certainly did make perfect, as Xion was well aware. She was sure that the rest of the people here had been skating for similar periods of time, or maybe even longer.Â
âWell, Iâve never had anyone to teach me.â Her dad and older brother were both absolute nerds who would never even consider picking up a skateboard, she was sure, and her identical twin brother â yes, identical twin brother, despite how different they looked now â had never been that into it from what she could tell. He was more of the type to stay in his room and blast music. Heâd been the rebellious child out of the three. âBesides Iâm not sure how good Iâd be.â
âI could show you how.â Roxas is quick to volunteer, fact aside that theyâve only just met; a lot of the older people in the park help the younger ones, or the people who have had no experience. It isnât strange by Roxasâ standards. Her latter words have Roxas shaking his head, still grinning at her. âDoesnât matter if youâre not good at first. No one ever is, but it doesnât hurt to try, right?â
Seldom do people come to Roxas for his skating expertise unless they have simple questions about tricks. The boy seems standoffish to most of them, a little weird in his lack of speech and his zombie-like trances that he sometimes goes into. Social cues generally go amiss on him, but Roxas figures that it canât be too hard to teach someone how to skate. Heâs seen the others do it, he totally knows what heâs doing.
      âIâm Roxas, by the way.â
x. axel
âYou still think about me.â The sentence is punctuated with him tossing the nearly burnt out cigarette to the ground, the heel of his boot crushing the last of the lit embers, staining the concrete with black ash. Axel exhales wearily, his lungs protesting and simultaneously making the decision for him to not pull his pack out for another one. Hearing washed-up as an insult was nothing new and loser? Hah. He snorts in a very unattractive manner, face screwing up as exhaustion and amusement bleed together on his features. âIâm so sorry to be a hindrance. It must be hell, really, having a harmless guy like me around.â
Unlike the actual creeps that hung around preying on some of the weak willed teenagers easily manipulated into buying the questionable product they were selling, Axel offered only company and words of the wise. Sometimes wise. He wasnât that much older than some of the students and could have easily passed for one of the university brats, but there were years of struggling on his own under his belt. He wasnât an expert in any means but the advice he dished out? You couldnât get it anywhere else- certified Axel brand.
He kicks away from his perch and further approaches the annoying skater turned Roxas. A name to a face. A name to a barely lit, semi obscured face, but thatâs why his steps bring him closer. Heâs a glutton for punishment anyway, never in his life being able to resist the ones that call him names and offend his lifestyle. He loves the way the kid isnât even phased. âThe nameâs Axel. Now, are you asking to ask or has this bumped our relationship up a level?â
Axel. Itâs a ridiculous name, for a ridiculous guy. The streetlamp situated on the other side of the half pipe, the one furthest from Roxas and, by association, Axel, offers a flickering, yellow luminescence, faded light that illuminates Axel as he comes into the full, eerie shine of it. Roxas stares down at him for a long moment, a cicada crying in the distance, shrieking like a woman giving birth to a half-baked son, loitering in skate parks and smoking himself into an early grave. But Axelâs not wrong: he really is harmless. Thereâs never been much of a threat from him -- that Roxas knows of, anyway.Â
      Ignorance is bliss, right?
Thatâs why Roxas, hefting himself and his board up, makes the slip-sliding descent down the pipe, heels dug into wood as he fumbles his way down as gracefully as possible. From a distance, Roxas hadnât put any correlation into their respective heights. Up close, though. The guy towers, popped-cherry red hair cascading over his shoulders like a fucked up heroâs cape, little purple tear drops under his eyes, and Roxas wonders what this guy deemed sad enough to cry eternally for. Maybe himself. He looks like heâd be full of philosophical bullshit that way.
âYour name is ridiculous.â Roxas says, dropping his board to the ground, listening as it clatters about. Roxas doesnât bother packing any heat behind his words; he doesnât say them to be mean, theyâre just an observation. He used to be Roxanne, before the binders, before the circus runaway act minus the circus. Before his father had stared him in the eyes and told him to put the goddamn fucking dress on, stop pretending, playtime is over. Before his mother had broken down crying in the living room because, no, mom, you donât have a daughter. You have a son. Youâve always had a son.
Maybe Axelâs name is like that, too. Maybe theyâre both just made up people in a made up town with made up goals, dreams, aspirations. Fake, fake, fake, until everything becomes real. Roxas dreams about being real, one day. A real boy -- like Pinocchio, but not.
      âWhy are you here?â

Xion shook her head with a slightly sheepish sort of smile. âNo, I donât: itâs just a fun sport to watch for me.â She also couldnât help but think that it would make for some excellent inspiration for artwork, whether it was a drawing or a drabble. There truly were benefits to stepping into environments different than one was used to. There were different sorts of things to experience, different types of people, and more, giving her a wider range of subjects for her works.Â
âIt seems like youâre a regular, though,â she continued, her own smile widening a bit. The way he handled his board implied heâd been skating for a good while, which was nice: it was good to have a pasttime one enjoyed, even better if it involved some physical activity in Xionâs eyes.
His responding grin is positively radiant. âSkating is an art form !! It takes a lot of practice, and tons of patience. Itâs always the best when someone says that they enjoy watching us.â Roxas gushes excitedly, unable to hold it all back now that sheâs admitted that she finds watching them fun. Truth be told, Roxas could probably spend hours waxing poetic about skateboarding, but he laughs, sort of embarrassed, and runs a hand over the back of his sweat-slicked hair instead.
âIâve been skating since I was fifteen, actually, so... six years, now. Almost seven.â Roxas pops his board up, one foot coming down onto the back of it to send the other end up and into his expectant hand. âYou should definitely try it sometime. Even if you never learn how to do any tricks, itâs super convenient for getting around, just being able to balance and ride.â
x. stranger
Axelâs not surprised in the least to be pegged as a weirdo. From every angle, even his own, heâs aware that his actions donât leave a good impression on the eyes of a stranger. But really, what kind of explanation did he owe a vaguely familiar skater that happened to share the same public space with him on certain occasions? His first response to the question is a long drag of his cigarette, his slow exhale further clouding his visage with smoke in the dimly lit skate park. The street lamps did him little to no justice when it came to his status as an already shady figure.
âYou wonder about me? Iâm flattered.â If anyone else wonders, this guy was the first to let Axel know. The druggies didnât mind him at all, they liked him even, when theyâre all just blatant reminders of the company he kept before he graduated. He knew how they worked and how to get along with them, so despite the differences in age, he was always there with a pack of smokes to lend out while they exchanged stories of bad trips or board tricks. His feet hadnât even touched a skateboard in years, but it fascinated him nonetheless.
It would be a lie if he were to say that his new acquaintance has escaped his notice before. Nearly everything that went on in this park had been subjected to his observations at one point or another because people watching was his hobby. It easily passed the daytime hours before he had to shuffle off to work and there was truly no better place to bum around than at the skate park, the home away from his shabby apartment. Casually, he pulls the still burning cigarette from his mouth while feigning a confused look. âKinda weird that youâve spent so much time thinking about me when you donât even know my name. I donât even know yours. Care to share?â
Once upon a time, there used to be a sign at the gate of the park, yellow and obtrusive, big black letters screaming: NO SMOKING. But it had been knocked down by belligerent young people hellbent on tarring their lungs with nicotine. Roxas remembers being there the day theyâd taken a metal bat to it -- beating it into submission, laughing, screaming profanities with reckless abandon. Watching this guy chain smoke like his very life depends on it has always taken Roxas back to that moment, watching as tiny, white assholes aggressed an innocent sign until all that remained of it was a stub of metal sticking up from the concrete.Â
âNo one said that I spend a lot of time thinking about you.â Roxas corrects, flipping his board over to observe his deck. Some people like to buy theirs pre-designed, but Roxas himself prefers to decorate it on his own. Stickers, decals, spray paint, scratches, and dents. Thereâs character in his board, stuff that canât be mimicked by a Plan B, or a Zoo York. He prides himself in this thing. âJust think itâs weird as hell that some washed up has-been loser spends a lot of his life people watching in a skate park. Your life must be pretty boring if this is what eats up your spare time.â
Roxas isnât looking at him to see the confusion on his face, studying his trucks, the wheels theyâre attached to. He flicks one of them just to watch it spin, a blur of bright, lurid pink, and thinks he might actually have to buy new ones soon. These wobble too much, worn out. Certainly seen better days. No, Roxas doesnât see the confusion, but when the wheel has stopped its merry-go-round of movement, thatâs when he looks up, stares down at that figure in the dark and says, âRoxas. My name is Roxas. What about you?âÂ
