There was something about the way he treated you, the way he was so good with words that it made you believe maybe he wrote everything good and worth reading. Perhaps your life's recent tendency to go downhill when everything is great, then he's there to pick back up the pieces and reassure you that you're going to be okay because, "You're strong, you're a good person, you're such a sweet girl." Even on the days when you felt like a toxic abomination to the entire planet Earth. Oh, how your soul ached for this validation.
Luigi was a tender guy you met online by chance, right platform, right time. Sharing similar value discussions and differing opinions that made you both enjoy each other's company more. Sure, there was a sea of other people but he chose to talk to you. Because you could hold a discussion without making a big argument or criticizing him for his personal beliefs. Solemn but respectable communication.
Gentle flirting.
It was never obvious, occasional teasing but nothing more than harmless fun. It was no biggie, you guys never went further than either of you were comfortable with. Luigi just knew how to handle a conversation without making you question his intentions.
You knew what he looked like, but he couldn't say the same about you. It wasn't that you were nervous or self-conscious, you just wanted him to like you for you, before your looks. Not that it mattered, you were solely friends. Nothing more, nothing less. It was nice at first to have that companionship of someone you could talk to every morning, every night, tell him about your favorite book series and movies- while he told you his. It was so easy to get lost in conversation with him that when it came time for it to end, you felt a little empty.
Slowly, your feelings for him developed. You were never too sure if he felt similarly or not. Luigi was hard to read and he was pretty private about his personal emotions, mental health, and all those things. He enjoyed talking mostly about his passion for computer science and being a big ol' nerd overall. It was all he wanted to do. It was his love.
Somehow he became yours.
After a stressful day, he'd be there to talk to, open up to about your small struggles of various things like work or home life. How you wanted so badly to escape this town. He was more outgoing than you, for sure, bolder, livelier. Meanwhile, you weren't the type to go out with friends on trips to other states or countries, you weren't sure what your passions were, there was an idea, but that was all. You felt so far behind him sometimes, his life gave you whiplash. All that while also suffering from a major illness. Luigi managed to still wake up with a smile on his face every day despite how his physical body turned out, and he treated others with endless kindness.
You could only have wished to be a fraction of that.
Maybe he was the nicest guy you've ever met. Maybe he was the guy you've always longed for in your life, that saw you for who you were and not the way others perceived you before. Not as a manic girl that loved too much, just as another human who lived a long life despite being so young; just like him. It was real, it was perfect.
Was.
You talked every day, give or take sometimes unless one of you didn't feel up to converse that day. At some point it felt as though he was slipping through your fingers, something so warm and tender became cold and distant. It's not that he didn't want to talk to you, no. The problem was he wanted to, too much, it scared him. He knew he wasn't good enough for you. Sometimes you believed you weren't good enough for him either. It went undiscussed, life started to become bland again. The world started losing its color the less and less you spoke with Lu, a life once so full of color now felt like a black and white TV show.
It was nobody's fault, maybe school got too hard, jobs became too dependent on you, mental health was declining, or perhaps it was the elephant in the room every time you spoke to one another. It hurt like a dagger in the back, because you really liked Luigi. The problem? You couldn't tell him. You hadn't known him that long. Maybe two months by now, and it was something special to you. Who cares about looks when you have a personality that unique?
When you see the world in so much more detail than other people that your perspective outshines every damned opinion that has ever existed. When you let yourself actually be a human and absorb life the way people were meant to instead of dreading the days coming and going, until eventually death takes your hand.
You never debated relationships so hard, the past ones were never the best, not something to be proud of. This time it felt different, it felt better, it felt right. Something that didn't happen often. Something worth living for.
Then today happened, it was around evening time when you received a message from Lu, and you tried not to open it too quickly, but something told you to. And you carefully read his words on your dim screen:

You hesitate with responding. It's hard to tell if that's a "goodbye" or a "see you later."
⋆˚࿔ "Hi, it's no worries. I hope things start to look up for you, Lu. You take care as well, I'll be here whenever you come back!"
At some point his account disappeared, without a trace. No messages since the last one, Luigi had gone blank and part of you wondered if you might've said or done something that contributed to it. But he wouldn't have told you he was leaving if you did, Luigi admitted to trusting you on multiple occasions. He was a good guy that wouldn't ghost you for no reason. That wasn't like him. None of this seemed like him.
You try to shake it off, assume it's for the best. You can't get attached to someone you barely know but know too well at the same time.

Nothing much had happened since Luigi suddenly disappeared from your life.
Besides your personal life things, and despite it having been months since you talked to him- you thought of him almost daily. Your thoughts would wander or take something and turn it into a reminder of him. You didn't mean to fall for Luigi, it happened overnight. You woke up feeling a flutter in your heart at every 'good morning' text, smiled with your phone clutched as your droopy eyes reading the 'goodnight' ones. Everything he'd done made you feel so incredibly special.
You missed Luigi.
Maybe somewhere out there, he missed you too.
Or maybe not.
It crossed your mind more than you'd like to admit, and you hated telling your friends. They'd think you were crazy as hell for falling for some stranger on the internet. Yeah, it was crazy, but it was yours. It was all yours. Your secret, your sanctuary, your security when those days were unbearable. He knew what to say, when to say it. It hurt that he wasn't there to talk to anymore. To give his advice on certain situations, or say something cheeky to make you smile.
It hurt and you felt stupid. Because, of course the second you found someone who you thought might be better for your health would end up leaving. But maybe it didn't hurt so much because you were used to it. Someone was always leaving.
You clench and unclench your hand in your lap as you flip through TV channels. Nothing special nor interesting. Life had just become a mix of work and watching TV on your days off, life lost that spark when Lu left. You sigh.
Every time you open that app on your phone, you solely think of him. It's a curse. You delete it ten times over, redownload, and try to forget or reconnect with old friends you met there. No one stayed long enough, no one was ever really your friend, were they? No.
By this point in time, you were alone. Your friends had become too busy to hang out, but good on them because they were doing something with themselves. Not you, not really.
A channel caught your eye.
Then there he was, getting escorted out of a police car.
