when you’re feeling all sad and emotional but then you remember who you are
Terrifying
If I could offer a young person advice about anything it would be do NOT make life decisions based on your boyfriend or girlfriend. Girls especially. Do NOT stay close to home for him, do not skip opportunities to travel or study abroad, do not pick a safe college to be with him. Expand your horizons. Broaden your own life. He is not the world.
I want everyone who disagrees with this post to come back to me in a couple years and tell me how that shit worked out.
1. People will promise to never leave you. They will. It’s okay to be sad when they do. 2. It is always okay to cry. Always. Find a bathroom, bury your face in your pillow, and let it out. Cry in the shower. Cry in the car. Cry when you need to. 3. Boys will flirt with you for a while and then ignore you. Then, they will flirt with you some more. It will be confusing. You have every right to stop putting up with it. 4. Pay attention to what people say when they’re angry. When you make up and they tell you they didn’t mean any of it, know that they did. Also know that they wish they didn’t. Forgive them. 5. Never pretend to be someone you’re not. If you don’t like tea and classic novels, don’t act like you do to impress people. If you don’t want to wear leather jackets and combat boots, don’t wear them to please someone else. 6. People will be mean to you; they will spread lies, call you names, and talk about you behind your back. Eventually you will realize that it is petty and stupid and not worth your time. You’ll be right. Move on with your life. 7. Your friends will not always be there for you. When you really need to talk, they will sometimes not want to hear it. That’s okay. Take a deep breath and remember all the times you felt the same way. Exhale. 8. You will wait and wait and wait for your first kiss and your first date and your first relationship. The anticipation will kill you. You will keep trying to find the right person in everyone you meet. Relax. There’s no rush. The best things happen unplanned. 9. Enjoy being young. Love that everything is spontaneous. As you get older, things become more and more scheduled out. Embrace the fact that you aren’t there yet. 10. Tell people how you feel. It will be terrifying in some cases and gratifying in others. It will create relationships and ruin them. But speak your mind, even if your voice shakes, because your thoughts may never otherwise be heard. 11. Sleep. If you go to bed late, sleep in. If you’re still tired when you wake up, go back to bed. If you can’t stay awake during the day, take a nap. Sleeping is a foolproof way of getting rid of your problems for a little while. Utilize it. 12. Talk to people. Talk to your sister about the guy she likes. Talk to your mom about her childhood. Talk to your dad about his favorite books. Talk to your grandparents about their families. Talk to your friends, talk to your pets, talk to the cute waitress at the restaurant. Learn things from them. Be inspired. 13. Always bring a sweater. Even if you think it won’t be cold. 14. Try new things. Eat a new food, try a new kind of juice, switch up the way you dress. You never know what you might end up loving. Life can get boring. Mix it up a bit. 15. Take care of yourself. Wash your hair with that good smelling soap you love. Eat fruits and vegetables. Drink lots of water. Go for long walks in pretty parks. 16. School is important. Try your hardest. If you don’t get something, ask for help. Do your homework. Show your teachers that you’re willing to work hard, and when it comes time to apply to colleges, you’ll be glad you did. 17. There will always be someone prettier, smarter, funnier, or more popular than you. The beauty of it is that it isn’t a competition.

Then there is the boy you can never stop thinking about. Whenever you see his name, it trips you up. Even if it’s one that belongs to many others, even if he belongs to someone else. You know he is a symbol of your weakness, your Kryptonite. How he rushes in like wildfire and burns through everything you worked so hard to build since he last left you in ashes.

There is no designated time for anything in your life. You don’t have to have your first kiss at any certain time, you don’t have to get married in your 20′s and you don’t have to do anything just because other people think it’s best. In fact, you will be much better off if you just do what your heart says. The day you stop caring what other people think is the day their opinions don’t mean anything, because you’re not there to give them weight.

The Harlem Renaissance
Group number 5 had a topic very well known, titled the Harlem Renaissance. Not only mentioned in the book Hip: The History but also students knowing something brief about the topic itself. As each group member discussed each point and gave their opinions, more insight we acquired in what made up the Harlem Renaissance. Black culture became very popular during the 1920’s. It was when African-Americans came out of their shells to show what black culture was made of to society. It was the beginning of black becoming the new Hip.
The Harlem Renaissance was when the Whites became fond of the blacks. Around this time African-Americans had a new voice and the starts of a new culture movement. It was their time to create new identities and strive to make African-Americans known. Black culture became so Hip that Whites were eager to be part of this great movement. It was a crazy, fun movement and although segregation still existed during the time people lived in the moment.
African-Americans wanted to be Hip but didn’t want to include others to be part of their culture. It was one of the most influential movements in the African-American up bringing. Jazz was also very popular during the time. It became so common that they held local jazz places in Harlem. These places were the way that Blacks used to express themselves. The Blacks were recasting their identity such so that Whites were having expectations of Blacks. Black culture was impacting in strange and increasing ways. It was a time for the Blacks to reclaim their identity that was taken away during slavery. A term given to the Blacks which was also hip was the new negroes. The history of the Harlem Renaissance opened doors that deeply influenced the generations of African Americans. It was the new negro movement. Not only that but Whites were so fascinated of Blacks that Whites began to publish the writings of the new negroes. It was something that was heard in the streets and read in the newspapers. It was a rising time for the new negroes. The Harlem Renaissance can go from artistic, literary, to cultural as a movement. African-Americans served as inspirations to Whites and leaders. Their influence spread throughout the nation and the center of New York became the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was where Hip was born during the time of African-Americans. It was a great time, it was the birth of the new negro culture.

The Lost Generation
After World War I a new generation fled to the village. A new generation was the hybrid culture which meant the combination of two species or culture. The lost generation had its given name because they lost sense of direction and lost hope. The lost generation came after World War I. The term was best known popular by Ernest Hemingway who wrote his novel the Sun also rises. The lost generation defines a sense of moral loss or aimlessness literary figures. Many young men who had recently came of age perished in World War I. Due to this these young men who survived returned home either mentally or physically wounded.
A quote said by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, "All gods dead all wars fought all faiths in man shaken".
The fact that World War I created such a great impression on people made people stop believing in God. People lost hope because of all the death that occurred during World War I. It was a time where no one was good or holy. The faith that they earlier held onto was no longer valid they were lost. It was said that all the young people who served in the war are the lost generation. However the term does not refer to all the artist who lived in Paris after World War I.The village citizens fled to Paris because after World War I happened, the damage caused the destruction of the souls. This generation then became known as the lost generation.
The end of banality was known as lacking originality. It was not being able to be oneself during the time. It was a time where art became more interesting.
The new bohemians was the practice of an unconventional lifestyle. Also known as out of the ordinary. The previous generation of bohemians were known as babies. The lost generation became the new bohemians by breaking social norms. Thus relating back to Ernest Hemingway who was a veteran of World War I, created the environment for a new form of literature. His style derived from Gertrude Stein and Sherwood Anderson was were also known during this period of the lost generation. The lost generation replaced idealism in the village. Idealism is said to be the practice of forming or pursing ideals. Such people of the lost generation were very hurt and distraught due to what occurred during World War I. World War I seemed to have destroyed the hope that if you behaved in a good way good things would come your way.

Music, Language and Religion
The merging of cultures becoming one together is what defines Hip. White American culture and African-American culture were a great start to what later became Hip. During the time both cultures mixed to create new identities of Music, Language and Religion. Throughout Chapter one you can see that John Leland states how African-Americans impose their ideals to the White American culture. By doing this they created a new style of what was Hip. Like the authors thesis, there is nothing essentially white or essentially black. To me this means that we all compose what it means to be an American. We all somehow contribute to this melting pot and we’re not constituted under a classified culture. Such that whites started using the language of black, listening to their music and practicing mixed religions.
Music was the intertwining between the whites and African-Americans. White Americans began to rap as if they were black. An example of that is Eminem as he started rapping black music but was a white boy. Thus stating that music was a place were both cultures came about to become one. As the older generations established this bridge, today we could enjoy what is any type of music and not focus of the complexion of the singers.
Black english was what considered hip during the time. Faster rather sooner people began engaging in this black english type of language that even slaves made it common to speak it. Such words like dig, banjo, jive and hunky were the black english of the time. Today blank english is known as Ebonics and this merged onto what is rap music. For example like the word “she’s fire” would mean that a person looks good. This type of language became so popular and common that people got used to blank english or ebonics. This was known as the normal language of time.
Religion on the other hand was the mixture of both cultures incorporating each others faith with one another. Christianity became a place were both put aside their differences to become one as whole. Here unity was practiced and everyone was equal.
African-American and European American became one through this stepping ground of Christianity. Later knowing that one culture shaped what today is known to be America. Both races experience and practice Christianity under one roof.
Even white kids wearing doo rags was what was hip during the time. This new form of merging cultures still exist today as more cultures incorporate themselves in what builds the American culture. We all form American even with our distinct form of thinking, acting or imposing our ideas. Someone at one point we meet and this is the purpose of Hip. This first chapter to me opened my eyes. Honestly i didn’t take much into consideration what made up both African and White American what is today. And as of now i have a different perspective towards what i believe and how i see both when together. Both cultures had several points of contact which were music, language, religion and sex.
What is hip ?
Lucely Montolio LEH Blog post #1 Being "turnt up" is how how the millennialist refer to what America knows to be hip. In contrast to the beatitude of a thelonious monk what today means to be hip is Girls running the world like beyonces famous hit. Hip is being able to have the "looks" like Jennifer lopez or buying expensive brands that range from Michael Kors to Louie Voutton. It is being able to have the best family like the Kardashians or the growing up to be good at a certain hobby. Dance theatre singing acting you name it! Being hip constitutes to the best and latest technology like apple or walking around the streets of manhattan with ray bans alongside a long champ purse. The way you dress, act , speak or carry out yourself and daily activities is what can determine if your hip. It's the old made new in American culture as fashion repeats itself through time. In today's society can be expressed when someone says something like thats sick or mad cool in their attempt to be hip. Being hip can't really be taught but somehow we all cling to what seems to be hip. like most teenagers say I'm wid it or i dig that meaning acceptance or This artistic freedom that we somehow grasp upon preludes to how fit in society we really want to be. Just like Starbucks , pink berry and chipotle are all hip ; McDonalds with free wifi goes hand and hand with what hip is. Social networks like Facebook , tumblur , Instagram and twitter are now hip. Astoundingly over the years the change in hip culture has revived itself into its own forms of a continuum cycle. Having beats around your neck is what can be said is hip. However in just past years colorful headphones were adhered to what is hip. Today having a north face in the winter is overrated being hip is keeping up with latest trends and having a merm. Being hip is having flat screen TVs in your living rooms to natural manicures when doing your nails with Essie nail polish.
