Scorpius snatched the letter rather hastily from the girl, brow knitted and lips pursed. "Nothing," he blurted, mind too clouded to think of a smooth excuse to appease the girl's curiosity. He stuffed the thick parchment into his schoolbag, regretting taking the letter out in such a public place. The last thing his wanted was his entitled and nosy housemates prying into his personal life and spreading gossip like wildfire around the school. He wished that Rose was around, but it was well past curfew. Besides, h'd never understood how to answer the silly riddles that guarded Ravenclaw's dormitories and he wasn't in the mood to attempt. He glanced up at the girl, face blank and waiting for an explanation for his uncharacteristic mood, and he immediately felt a bit guilty. His mother would be displeased at such a curt answer - it wasn't as if sh'd tried to read the letter, and it was hardly her fault for being curious. Wouldn't you have asked the same if she had dropped something in the same manner? And there he was, back at his mother's voice, scolding him as if was ten again and broke her favorite goblin-made earrings. Looking down sheepishly, Scorpius adjusted his robes and bag on his shoulders. “It’s a letter from my mother,” he admitted, “and thank you for not reading it.”
Lucy had always been clever with reactions--she could see something was certainly suffocating him, but somewhere deep down she sort of wanted him as an ally--no, a friend. So, she didn’t pry and she let his words come all on his own. She remembered when she was really young and how her mum had become terribly ill for almost a whole year of her, at the time, puny life. She remembered how she wouldn’t talk--selective mutism is what the label at Mungo’s was, and, since then she had been back far too many times to like it. Her thoughts wandered pretty far off track in only a moment. So, she just focused back on him. “Oh. You don’t say that enthusiastically so, I won’t push, but, yeah. No problem. I wouldn’t want someone reading my letter. Courtesy, you know?”
