“No no it’s okay, you’re a movie star. What should I expect?” Catalina smirked, stepping towards her. “I’m just glad you’re doing well, that’s all. You have lunch next, right? Let’s eat together, catch up.”
lucy flipped her hair over her shoulder at that, being as extra as she could be. “ true, lucy day. movie star. ” she said with a chuckle. her mind was starting to race now, the coke having hit her. “ lunch next? yes! i could use all the food right now. ” she said, looping her arm through cat’s. “ i need mac n’ cheese. ”
ccarvahlo:
Catalina felt on cloud nine–the weekend had been great and relaxing, and she felt like she couldn’t wipe a smile off of her face. August had agreed to go on a date with her, her moms had visited, and she felt rejuvenated. Heading into the bathroom during her science class, Cat paused when she saw Lucy, a bit of a concerned look on her face. “Just needed to pee,” she smirked. “I feel like I haven’t seen you at all this last week, how are you?”
lucy pouted at the girl across from her, nodding her head in agreement. “ i know, i’m sorry. i’ve been so busy with work and shit, i think i can count on one hand how many hours of sleep i’ve gotten over the past four days. ” she laughed, wringing her hands under the water running from the sink. “ but, i’m back now so no need to fret! ”
it was only monday, but somehow lucy felt as though she had already had the longest week ever. her weekend had been filled with press interviews, red carpets, photoshoots, and a-list parties that didn’t end until the sun had risen above the horizon. she was exhausted, to say the least -- and she still somehow had to make it through class. her energy was dwindling, and these days coffee just didn’t cut it. with her mind clouded, she raised her hand to absentmindedly ask for a hall pass, slowly making her way to the washroom when she was granted it. her fingers dug to the bottom of her bag, fishing for what she needed. a small smile pulled at the corners of her lips as she grasped the little dime bag, spilling the white powder onto her hand, her back to the bathroom entrance. her free hand pressed her nostril shut before she inhaled, eyes blinking a few times as the sudden rush hit her. she shook her head before taking another hit and stashing the little bag back into her purse, whipping around to fix her hair in the mirror just as the bathroom door opened. she turned towards the body, a smile adorning her features as she saw cat’s familiar face. “ hi, honey. lipstick break? ” she asked.
for hebrew, it was all about the little things. the small rules he could break just by merely walking around on campus - for the first time in a year, mind you.
for one: nail polish adorned his finger nails. black, which was the exact contrast to the nude-only polish redwood allowed. two: a small dime bag sat comfortably in his pocket, one he’d probably break into before the night was out. and three, and best of all: technically, hebrew was still on his year long suspension until tomorrow night. but he thought he’d swing by early - go out of his way to hit the trifecta.
“they still selling funnel cake this late?” he asked, working a piece of gum between his teeth. “i’ve had a long ass flight, i’m starving.”
lucy had been having a pretty good time at the carnival this year. no drama, no fights, no fish bowls thrown at anyone’s head. all in all, it had been a pretty good night. that was, until she spotted him. the second his familiar voice registered in her mind, her blood began to boil. what the fuck was hebrew doing back? she slowly turned around, face cold as stone as she met his eyes. “ who let you back in? ” she asked, arms crossed tightly across her chest. “ and what the fuck were they thinking? ”
augvstxs:
“you realize if i could’ve told ten year old me that the lucy day said i had a perfect personality, i would probably die and not make it to this point?” august laughed, almost immediately aware of the absurdity. the pair were four hundred feet in the air - august attending a school four times out of his mother’s income range, talking to a celebrity he’s adored since the second grade.
“no, but yeah i am liking it here.” he nodded, unable to rid himself of his grin. “i mean the classes and the facilities are out of this world.” he casted a gaze out towards the carnival below. “and i’ve definitely met some characters here, present company included.”
to that, he flashed a sly grin.
“i wish i didn’t feel like such a sore thumb though. if it’s not the aforementioned essay, it’s some weird brainiac identifier all of the students seem to have on me thats’s kind of… isolating.” august said. “you guys really do your research around here.”
“ listen— i wasn’t gonna mention it, but are you doing okay?”
the girl’s head tipped back in laughter, the fear she felt spreading throughout her body disappearing momentarily. it was odd, the way he could do that. it wasn’t the first time that his presence had made her feel exceptionally better, and she doubted it would be the last. “ trust me, i’m nothing special. ” she said with a chuckle, her mind coming back to its senses -- and how they were probably about to die any minute.
she nudged him softly with her shoulder at his next words, a soft blush cascading across her cheeks. that was another thing -- he made her blush. lucy couldn’t remember the last time she had genuinely blushed, aside from while filming, but that was just acting. as was much of her life, she supposed. if there was one thing lucy had learned in this life, it was that if you acted like something was true, eventually you’d start to believe it. she had acted her way into happiness, plastering a smile on her face everywhere she went, fooling people into believing she was okay when in reality, her mind was eating away at her. the constant itch for a drink, or a line of coke never left her mind, but you bet your ass no one knew that -- not with how good her skills had become. lucy day truly was the actress of the century, both in her personal and professional life.
so, at his question, she did just that -- a smile painted across her lips, her head nodding at his question. “ of course, ” she started, eyes meeting his. as soon as she looked at him, she knew she couldn’t continue with her show. her smile faded, her shoulders slumping slightly. the boy that sat beside her was so genuine, so real. how could she act in front of him when he was nothing like the rest of the people in her life? “ i just -- ” she paused, biting her bottom lip before taking a giant leap of faith and leaning towards him, softly pressing her lips against his. her hand rested on his forearm as she lingered a moment longer.
augvstxs:
august did okay with heights. he was a thinker after all — and could pretty easily separate himself from what was happening currently, and what could happen later. all that to say, the two of them could die from a ferris wheel malfunction. but the way august saw it, they weren’t currently. so everything was fine.
that’s what life in new jersey had reduced him to, really.
but lucy, lucy was clearly having a harder time with this. so august did his best to keep the conversation flowing, trying to get her mind off of the situation until it was over. “ah, i’m not worried about it if you aren’t. honestly i think the cameras are kind of cool.” a genuine smile crossed his features. “i feel like i’m some movie star they’re stalking. like, post-torrid affair or something.”
he watched the blonde carefully as he talked, wanting to make sure she was doing okay. “— the headmaster called me into his office the other day, and introduced me to this random brunette girl. c-caitlyn i want to say? maybe catherine. a real overachiever type, you know? like me, but a girl. — anyways, he was telling her all about the framed essay he had in his office. and i was half listening, but mostly wondering why on earth this girl kept glaring daggers at me the whole time. and then i noticed… it was my essay he was talking about. he was talking me up to a girl who wants nothing but to grind me into dust probably. i wanted to die. isn’t that insane?”
lucy laughed softly at his words, “ well, i can guarantee there will be headlines about us dating tomorrow. i bet they’ll say i purposely broke the ferris wheel to get alone with you. ” she said with an eye roll, glancing down at the cameras once again. “ but hey, i won’t complain about someone not minding the cameras. you have no idea how hard it is to get a boyfriend when you’re constantly being photographed -- most guys aren’t too impressed. ”
she continued to breathe in and out slowly as their cart swung in the breeze, her knuckles turning whiter and whiter as she held her grip on the support bar in front of them. she had seen one too many videos of people dying on carnival rides, and she was not ready to leave this earth quite yet -- at least not until she got to stay a night in the versace mansion. the sound of august’s voice broke her out of her fear-ridden thoughts, bringing her back to reality. she tried her hardest to listen and ignore the crippling anxiety she felt in the pit of her stomach and focused all of her energy into him -- her eyes scanned his face, watching his lips as he spoke. okay, that was good -- doing that helped, kept her grounded, no pun intended. “ there’s a lot of those here. ” she said, gaze still focused on the boy. “ but that’s great, august. really -- if we weren’t about to die, i would totally hug you in celebration. you’ve got brains and a perfect personality, i could just snag you right up. ” she said with a nervous chuckle. “ so does that mean you’re liking it here? ”
ccarvahlo:
“It’s because you’re hot, everyone wants to kiss you,” Catalina smirked at her. “Can we… not do that right now. I need a break, Let’s get cheese fries,” she giggled. “And we can talk. I feel like I haven’t seen you in forever.”
“ i know that’s why. it was very overwhelming, though. like, almost more overwhelming than walking the red carpet. ” she said with a soft chuckle. lucy still found it hard to believe that so many people wanted to see her, even after all these years of being in the spotlight. she supposed that was a good thing though, it kept her humble. the girl offered her friend a smile, squeezing her arm as she nodded in agreement. “ ah, cheese fries. the way to my heart. ” she said with a laugh, pulling cat towards the foot stands. “ i know, i’m sorry i’ve been so busy. life, you know? ”
augvstxs:
august let himself lean into her hug. it was a sweet gesture, and more than welcome. plus, lucy smelled vaguely of strawberry shampoo, and that tickled him.
in the few hours he’d spent with buddy the fish, august had grown a little attached. he just might take lucy up on her offer - eager to spend more time with the both of them, really.
more people had started to gather around the fish toss booth now. if he was just a tad more naive, he’d offer to start a game for any one of the students; launch into his spiel about two tickets for three balls. but the cell cameras pointed in his and lucy’s directions were glaringly obvious, and he decided not to bother with the niceties.
“i finish up my shift in ten minutes. you mind waiting?” he asked. august debated just leaving early, but his paranoia got the better of him. he pulled another three ping pong balls out from a cardboard box and set them on the booth, for lucy to free play with while she waited. “i swear, it’ll be the least boring ten minutes of your life.”
the blonde shook her head at his question, picking up one of the ping pong balls he had set down in front of her. “ not at all, ” she said with a soft smile, rotating the ball around in her hand. “ i’m holding you to that statement, by the way. ” she shot him a playful wink before turning her back to shoot the ball, sinking it right away. she continued to play for the remaining ten minutes of his shift, sinking each and every ball into a fishbowl and earning quite the applause from the crowd that had gathered. with a final curtsey, she took august’s hand in her own and pulled him away from the booth, skipping slightly as she tried to escape the wandering eyes of everyone at the booth.
a few hours later, the pair had hit pretty much every booth at the carnival and lucy had a permanent smile plastered on her face, which was something very unknown to her. they sat on the ferris wheel now, slowly making their way to the top. of course, as fate would have it, the wheel stopped working just as they reached the highest point of the wheel -- and lucy was absolutely terrified of heights. her knuckles were white as she gripped onto the sides of the cart, deep breaths rattling through her lungs. “ fuck, ” she said, nervous laugh bubbling up, “ i wish i had a joint. ” she looked over at the boy, trying her best to ignore the fact that they could die at any second. a yell from below broke her gaze away from august, her eyes peering down to the ground. once again, a dozen cameras were pointed up at her, no doubt ready to post about how scared the famous lucy day had gotten on a high school carnival ferris wheel. “ fuck, ” she said again, shaking her head slightly. “ i’m sorry about all of that. and at the booth earlier -- i know it’s not what you want to be around. ”

“Hey,” Catalina smirked at Lucy as she came up next to her friend, looping their arms together. “I haven’t seen you all night. Too scared to learn about your future?”
the blonde smiled at the girl as she approached, rolling her eyes playfully. “ you have no idea how long my line was at the kissing booth. this is the first minute i’ve had to myself in three hours. ” she said with a dramatic huff, “ but feel free to tell me my fortune -- i’d love to see what else the world has to throw at me. ”
