Chris nodded and grabbed the knife with his good handâ his bad one was already starting to bruise and swell around the thumb. He took her wrists carefully and started cutting through the ropes.
When she thought he had made progress on the ropes, she tugged herself the rest of the way free. She rubbed the rope burns on her wrists. âThanks.â She paused, looking with concern at his thumb. âYou alright?â
Chris nodded and smiled. He looked down at his thumb and waved his good hand dismissively. âYeah, Iâll be fine,â he assured her, glancing towards the front of the vehicle. âI think we could risk trying to throw ourselves out the backâ it would be safer than waiting until we get where weâre going to jump them.â
"Yeah, lets do it." She was honestly pretty nervous about jumping out of the back of a moving vehicle. She had done some pretty scary stuff though. She'd just have to take a deep breathe and do it. "Ready when you are."
Everyone has scars. We just donât all wear them on the outside.

âThink of the one thing that youâve always wanted. Now find it in your mindâs eye and feel it in your heart.â
âI want so much more than theyâve got planned!â
âHello? Who said that?â
âWhat are you reading?â
âI am NOT a beast!â
âMy room? But I thoughtâŚâ
âOnce this door closes, it will never open again!â
âHave you really read every one of these books?â
âAs a specimen, yes, Iâm intimidating!â
âI never thanked you for saving my life.â
âIt just occurred to me that Iâm illiterate and Iâve never actually had to spell it out loud beforeâŚâ
âYouâll join me for dinner. Thatâs not a request.â
âOh, you are very strong! This is a great quality!â
âI want adventure in the great wide somewhere.â
âYou are the wildest, most gorgeous thing Iâve ever seen! Nobody deserves youâŚâ
âItâs more than I can bear.â
âYou have to help me. You have to stand.â
âHello! Pleased to meet you! Wanna see me do a trick?â
âCome into the light.â
âOh, Iâm not a princessâŚâ
âYouâve taken me as your prisoner, and now you want to have dinner with me? Are you insane?â
âThere must be something there that wasnât there before.â
âDo you realize what you could have done? You could have damned us all!â
âJust a little change, small to say the least.â
âI will escape, I promise!â
âHow lovely to make your acquaintance!â
âWhen we return to the village, you will marry me.â
âPretty eyes, proud face, perfect canvas! Yes! I will find you something worthy of a princess!â
âAre there any other tasteless demands you would like to make on my artistry?â
âI was the one who had it all.â
Sheâs never where she is. Sheâs only inside her head.

I do believe this library is quite perfect just as it is.

âI-Itâs going to be your ass!â Chris protested, unable to help the way his cheeks flushed red in response as he said it. âI feel like this is your decision here!â
She sighed and leaned back. It didnât make her any more comfortable. This was a super awkward situation. On the one hand plan A would make things even more awkward, but plan B involved him dislocating his thumbs.
She would have buried her head in her hands, had they been free. She was not about to choose, but she also knew their chance at escaping was slipping away by the second. She looked over at him, clearly distressed about making this decision. âWhich way would be quicker.â
âAt this rate, dislocating my thumb. You know what, Iâm just going to go ahead and do it. Saves time,â Chris said quickly. She clearly wasnât going to make the decision anytime soon, and they were wasting precious time.
In one quick movement Chris reached over, grabbed his thumb, and wrenched it backwards. There was a loud popping snap before his thumb hung down limp. He didnât even appear to flinch. He slipped carefully out of the handcuff and popped his thumb back into place before reaching out for the knife. All of this took a few seconds at most.
She winced when thebloud pop filled the air. She was in all honestly, amazed at how painless he made it look. She used her mouth to place the knife on her knee. "Can't exactly hand it to you."

It had been an very long day. She had started taking collage courses, another depressing reminder that she might never get home. She nodded and opened her arms. âWell then I could definitely use a hug.â
She wrapped her arms around Beatrix, hugging her gently. âIâm Victoria, but you can call me Vix, you?â
âBeatrix, but you can call me Bea.â She sighed in relif. She really needed a hug, even if it was from a total stranger. She back out of the hug and crossed her arms over her chest. She had been combing through shelves at the library, obviously about ready to cry, when the younger girl had come up to her. She liked to read when she was stressed. It was one of the few things that still worked to calm her. âWhat brings you here?â
Vix smiles, âNothing much, Iâve got to do a report on Metropolis and thought why not see it and all its glory? Odd idea, I know but Iâm full of them. You?â
âJust looking for something new to read,â she shrugged. âBut Iâm pretty sure Iâve read everything in here.â
âAny recommendations? Iâve been having trouble looking for a good read,â Vix asks before turning back to the shelves and peering at the codes, âI swear I should get glasses with my eyesight,â she mutters before pulling out a book from her satchel (totally not a purse), handing her a copy of Millie Jane Cobblepotâs diary, âHere you go, this is a required read over at my school, quite interesting too, you may like it,â
She nodded. Sheâd been reading a lot recently. âThanks, and here.â She reached up and grabbed a book off the shelf. âSix of Crows by Leigh Bardugo,â she explained. âIts different than what I usually read, but its really good.â
Vix flips the book over, quickly skimming the blurb with her eyes, âSeems interesting! Iâll be sure to read it!â She smiles, âMetropolis has a much bigger selection than the libraries over in Gotham, have you ever been?â
âNot in quite a whileâŚâ She wasnât exactly sure how to explain that she had been to Gotham in several different timelines, but not the one she was currently stuck in.
âIt takes some getting used to, but I like it, after all, itâs the city that saved me, I like to say,â
She nodded. She was curious, but she didnât want to pressure her. âYeah, I like it here though. It reminds me of home.â
âYour not from Metropolis?â She asks, tilting her head slightly in confusion, âIâm not from Gotham, so I canât really say anything.â
âYes its just I lived in a different part of metropolis, you know big city.â It was a sad attempt to make up for her slip.
âOkay, then!â She perks up again, which wasnât really hard seeing that there was caffeine buzzing through her veins and her head was up with the clouds.Â
âYeah,â she nodded. She shoved her hands in her pockets, shifting awkwardly. âI think I gotta goâŚ.â
âOh! Well, it was nice meeting you!â She smiles, âDonât let life get ya down, itâll only mean that it had won. Keep that in mind the next time youâre in need of a hug,â
"Thanks." She smiled kindly, making her way to the door.
