On my recent obsession: the Pacific Northwest
Maybe it began as a sort of escapism, as all of my geographical obsessions begin. What caught me by surprise was the fact it was new, not the usual rotation of Scotland, Nepal, Tohoku and Minas Gerais.
I thought the Appalachians would be the next victim but no. Maybe it was me trying to reconnect with my teenage self that would have a healthier relationship with the internet by spending countless hours researching whatever instead of being spoon fed content through the broken algorithm. At least I used to learn something. At leats I've exercised my brain.
The seeds of the obsession:
I. It started with having to search for references for an class assignment to design a book cover for kids. Because of the book subject, I've used Gravity Falls as the main art reference, and while researching it, I've found out it was based in Oregon;
II. Recently my Instagram feed was inundated with "the urge to travel the Pacific Northwest" kind of post with photo edits of misty forests, lake side camps, flannel fashion, and The Full Moon by the Black Ghosts, a Twilight OST song, as the background song. Usually it has either an orange tint or the Twilight turquoise tint.
Today I've started researching Oregon, maybe I'll move on to Washington.
What I have gathered about Oregon through countless wikipedia tabs (I may be wrong, I'm trying to remember without revisiting it):
It is slightly bigger than the United Kingdom.
There are a bunch of lakes.
If you look at the map, closer to the coast it's greener, the further east, in the direction of the Rocky Mountains, it's paler, maybe more drier as it get's close to the Nevada Desert? Maybe.
The mythical policule ridden Portland is from Oregon, but it is not it's capital, which is Salem, not the Witch Trials Salem though.
Maybe I should go over the geography again, looking for national parks, lakes and waterfalls.
I should probably research musicians and artists too. The thing is though, maybe the feeling that I am searching for comes from the state of Washington: Forks, the Ring, Twin Peaks.
Nevertheless, maybe I'm completely wrong. There's only so much I can learn through the internet. Tomorrow I'll continue.
