Project 4 Reflection

What are three things you would change if you were to go back and finalize this video further?

1) I would adjust the audio so that it fluctuates more with when narration begins / ends.

2) I would adjust the lighting to be more cohesive. There are some scenes that are brighter / darker than others. The scenes in front of the computer were the most challenging to adjust the lighting to look more normal... I’m not entirely sure how I feel about how the final color editing turned out.

3) Stabilization... This was one of the trickiest parts for me. I am not satisfied with the time-stretch effect I did in a couple of the scenes; I think it could have look smoother. I would go back and make sure the stabilization looked smoother.

What is the main takeaway that you learned from working on this project?

I learned so much about video editing! This was my first time making a film, and I actually had a lot of fun and am proud of the way that it turned out! I learned that making videos is enjoyable and it’s a lot of fun to put a story together out of what seems like a bunch of random shots.

Having fun with obscuring text in scene.

Screen grab from my Product Video! I am having fun with Kinetic Typography for this project, too! I’m also trying to incorporate blending the text with the background, like we learned in class. I’m hoping to get through arranging the clips and everything as quickly as I can so that I can start working on color editing and all that good stuff. PROJECT UPDATE!! Interviewing is difficult. It was hard for me to find the right things to ask my dad about his job. Long story short, the interview didn’t end up going as smoothly as I planned. However, there are some bits of conversation that I recorded which will be awesome to throw in the movie along with scenes of him building and making cool things.

SO, I won’t be able to use a LOT of the audio from my Dad and I will have to go back to the idea of me narrating the video. I’m going to try to not say a whole lot and still use some of his narration as well. I’m going to stick to the idea of me talking about what he taught me growing up through his constant attitude of fearlessly making and creating things. One of the lines I am planning to say which kind of sums up the idea of the video: “Sometimes, it’s the experience of learning that makes the end result so satisfying.” Hopefully I can get that interesting / inspiring / thoughtful vibe across in my video! ...Back to editing!

This is a great resource for what drives your storyline. “We believe that story is based on 4 P's: People, Places, Plot, and Purpose.The 'P' you put first, or prioritize, determines the type of story you'll end up telling. Lead with Plot and you have an action movie. Lead with Purpose and you have a commercial. But when you lead with People, we have the potential for an emotional, character-driven story.”

Good things to know! It helps to see the things that I need to be paying attention to; how far away voices are from the camera, etc...

Here is a rough storyboard. Hoping to capture lots of warm colors and pretty outdoorsy-ness and sawdusty, half-finished projects. Also a closeup shot of a chicken would be awesome.

Rough Script for Product Video

[Narration]:

This...is my dad.

He likes to build things.

He used to build houses for a day job.

When I was little, he would get home late and my sister’s and I would untie his muddy boots and pull them off his tired feet.

My Dad always told me, the best quality someone can have is the ability to work hard. To put all your effort in. To get the job done. You can change a person’s life by working hard for them. Whether that’s building them a house... Or just being kind to them. Helping them out. Building them up.

My Dad likes to invent cool stuff.

[Interviewing]:

Have you always had projects going, your whole life?

Have you always liked to invent?

[Narration]:

My Dad became a house designer by teaching himself Archicad.

He built his own business from what he learned. He designs really beautiful log homes.

[Interviewing]:

Are you ever afraid to learn something new?

Is it hard to teach yourself how to do things?

[Narration]:

As I grow up, I often get scared. I’m afraid to fail, afraid to commit. Sometimes I’m even scared to work hard when the challenge is daunting and unknown.

My Dad built a rocket stove from watching YouTube videos. (I don’t even know how I could be related to him!)

[Interviewing]:

So what’s your biggest piece of advice for someone in their 20′s about to go out into the real world?

##Note: May change around the narration and interviewing segments a little.

Here is a very rough draft of my shot list ideas. I know that there will be a mixture of indoor and outdoor shots. Some steady, some more of a “homemade” / shaky appeal, wandering around the outdoors. Other shots will be close to still frame, and I haven’t decided yet if I am going to through some stop motion in there as well.

I love Kid President. The Kid President pep talk inspires me for my Product Video because I want my video to address fears and apprehensions and speak to them in a powerful but gentle way. Kinda like how Kid President does. I also love the mixture of narration and speaking directly to the screen, mixed with the “messy” type matched to the words. The music is uplifting and plays a part in the feel of the film. The filming isn’t steady and cuts to new scenes of walking around outdoors and doing things generally unrelated to the narration. This is the same look that I am hoping to go for in my video. Very casual, everyday life feel. Basically, I’m going for the heart-warming approach. I only hope to someday be as cool as Kid President. :)

Project 3: Type Specimen: Clarendon (And yes it is almost 2 am right now...)
