From the top. Belfast’s own Colin Davidson’s “Ed Sheeran”, 2016. Bet Sheeran’s dad, art historian and curator is delighted to have his son immortalised in paint and hanging in the National Portrait Gallery, London! Beautifully loose and pacey, Sheeran looks mature and reflective whilst still youthful. Big fan of both these creative giants 💙

The enlarged eye by John Mc Carthy which unlike Sheeran above is not in the permanent collection, but instead was entered into this year’s BP Portrait Award which is of course what I wanted to see in the first place before being distracted! Mc Carthy is no stranger to the portrait award and was made visitor’s choice back in 1999. He made this eye portrait of a man named Derek who is a pupil in one of Mc Carthy’s classes where he works with young people with learning difficulties.
