Chicago Reader has published an important story this week about how the impending loss of the Affordable Care Act will impact Chicago's music community. This moving story also includes testimony from me and other musicians for whom the ACA has been critical. Debilitating chronic illness changed my life forever two years ago, making it incredibly difficult to work, perform, and write and release new music. But without the Affordable Care Act, I would be much sicker than I am today. Detail of 7/100: Let’s take a moment to talk about the issue of sex, which is going to come up in a lot of these poems. ≪⌯≫ I was (and am) a practicing Mormon. I chose not to have sex before marriage, but I also chose not to repress my sexuality, and consider myself a very sex-positive person. At the time, Mark often told me that such a choice was incompatible with feminism, and he did not respect that choice. He felt that not sleeping together created a brother-sister dynamic between us. I don’t think he was entirely wrong with regards to our dynamic. The difference of opinion was, I felt that dynamic would be solved when we got married. Mark wasn’t so sure. ≪⌯≫ When Mark left, I had to face the very real truth that I might never find anyone else. I was never very successful dating in the Mormon community. I was always too much: too weird, too smart, too awkward, too secular, too fat. So when the relationship ended, I had to face the reality that this might have be my only chance, and I might never be able to have sex. ≪⌯≫ This poem is the first to really tackle my horror. The idea of not having that essential human experience was really scary to me. It’s very easy to be proud of absitance at 20. Even 25. But around 27, you start to feel unnatural. Your body feels unhealthy, and you feel undeveloped and strange not having it. So being 30, on the cusp of finally finally FINALLY being able to fulfill that desire, and then having it taken from you, THAT was hard. That was so, so hard. ≪⌯≫

CHICAGO: I'm casting spells at Asrai Garden's SPELLBOUND event at Freehand Chicago on October 22. Evening includes brews by Nandini Khaund, temporary tats by Black Oak Tattoo, palm readings by Theresa Principe, a smudge stick station courtesy of Asrai Garden, and DJ sets by Heather Gabel and John Biggerovksi. I'll be performing from 7-8pm. Last year's event was packed from the start, so show up early and party late. 🔮🌙
