Angela would rather get blood on her shirt than feelingsâŠ
Donât waste time blaming yourself when you can spend time planning how to destroy our enemies.
- Lillian Lynburn is much wise. Unmade by Sarah Rees Brennan. (via bookphile)
I was rereading The Lynburn Legacy last week and I kept noticing all of Kamiâs descriptions of her clothes⊠All of these are (at least partly) described in the books. ft. Jaredâs jacket. separate images on my art blog | society6Â
(also partly inspired by walkingnorthâs fashionable fictional character thing :))
Is this not the most beautiful and perfect thing you can imagine? How lucky am I! Kamiâs fashion is near and dear to me because I gave her some outfits I actually own⊠not least the Fluffy Pink Bathrobe, which alas had to be thrown out because I âwore itâ âevery dayâ âover my clothesâ and it was âdisgustingâ. And seeing said fashion interpreted by such a HIGHLY GIFTED artist and in such a cutiepie manner delights me. (Look at Jaredâs jacket with the heart t-shirt! And the hood with the EARS!)
I love what characters wear and what that says about them. Just now I am writing something with a male character who dresses like a high-end weirdo and I know so much more about Alexander McQueen than I ever knew before! And seeing this beautimous picture reminds me of the terrible thing I did in Unmade and how sad I was to do it. (Oh no⊠you know⊠the *other* terrible thingâŠ)
âHereâs the thing,â said Kami. âHolly came to me with this story because nobody else would have listened to it. And nobody would have listened to me if Iâd called the police and said, âOh, the kids are making too much noise in the woods.â Theyâre listening to me now because I went out and found something. I found something. And it was horrible, and the only way I know how to deal with something horrible is to do something about it. This is my story. And Iâm not going to give it up. Iâm going to see how it ends. You donât get a say.â â Unspoken by sarahreesbrennan.
I stink at making edits but I love making collages on my phone. Sorry? Image sources: [X], [X], [X], and [X]. (The image of the Frost quote from Unspoken is my own. Part III of the book, in case youâre curious.)
Ooooh so so pretty! WHO IS THAT CUTE LADY, what a great pick. Those woods SHOULD be yours, girl. (I always thought so.) (So it makes me very happy to see celebration of my girl! THANK YOU.)
Lynburn legacy candle. Made using: a glass jar baked in polymer clay and filled with a melted candle.
I was reading Untold, by Sarah Rees Brennan, and I was making polymer candles, this just sort of happened.
This candle is inspired by the first two books - Unspoken and Untold- in the Lynburn Legacy series.
The house at the front is supposed to be the Glass house. I gave it a thatched roof (does it have a thatched roof in the book?) Old, and a bit wonky, made of the same Cotswold stone that the rest of Sorry-in-the-Vale is made from. To the left is a spooky, gnarled tree. To the right a sword, possibly a Lynburn dagger?? (It should be gold, but I havenât got any so its silver) To the back sits Aurimere, the great Lynburn manor. Set in black so that when the candle is lit it looks as if the manor is on fire (lots of mention of fire in this book) Below the manor sit the twin pools, nestled between are the pinpricks of the town. Once the candle melts down those pinpricks should shine, like houses on a dark hillside. Blood and glod are major themes that run throughout the series. I hope the red candle, and golden flame are able to represent that.Â

Isnât this so so pretty? I love it because it symbolises the two sides of the story. But also how cool it looks with the candle burning within. I wish I was crafty, but I am not at all: all I can do is gape in admiration at the crafty who bless me with their wonderfulness!
books read in 2015 | untold by sarah rees brennan
She did not know why the townspeople had not risen up against the Lynburns years ago, frankly. Whatever happened to the folksy and charming tradition of storming the castle with burning torches and pitchforks?
I love it all but perhaps specially the KISS IN THE SNOW, which took me aaages to write. ;)
So whenever Kami thought about Jared in Unmade, was poor Ash just curled up in a corner like "agh no stop I do not need to be thinking that about my brother"?
Ash was thinking and feeling a lot of things which Ash himself would never have thought or felt in Unmade!
Poor Ashâthe other two are such strong personalities, and so used to connections like this in a way he simply was not. He was buffeted by the winds of fate. He just had to hold onto the steering wheel and go âI hate you guys and Iâm running away to uni, I hate you guysâŠâ
I mean, which is worse, sometimes hearing sexy thoughts about your brother, or being accidentally brainwashed into being in love?
I guess the WORST would be: accidentally brainwashed into being in love with your brother. ;)
Count your blessings, Ash.

Aw, what a perfect title! And a beauteous moving album cover.
'How You Get the Girl' has almost instantly been accepted as a song 100% about ladies gettin' with ladies and I hope that is what TSwizzle intended. Delighted to be part of that.
And indeed, Long Live is on the official Unmade playlist, so we are as ONE. (Me and Allie, and me and TSwizzle, whom I have loved a looong time. Way before John Green loved her, so now she says John Greenâs her favourite YA author, he is clearly my nemesis.)
(Iâm just kidding, Iâm excited Taylor Swift reads YA, and David Hasselhoff is my nemesis.)
(Thatâs a long story that mostly involves Game of Thrones actors.)
Ahem. Back to Holly and Angela. I also love Tegan and Sara, and Colbie Caillat, and their lyrics fit in purrrfectly with some particular feelings my ladies have. Holly, embrace your future: it contains more naps than you were perhaps prepared for.

I love how the songs work as an evolution of Hollyâs character. ;) Plus, I love the songs!
The kiss transformed into something world-changing, warming the air, slowing time. The sun shimmered behind Hollyâs closed eyelids, and above their heads the wind whispered promises to the leaves.
I read Unmade yesterday. I have a lot of emotions about Holly and Angela.
Aw. I have a lot of emotions about them, too.
So, Iâm going to tell an anecdote, but before I tell it, Iâd like to be clear: I think the biggest problem in LGBT* representation is that there isnât enough representation of any kind. I am always glad to see representation of any kind: it makes me very happy, and it makes me think the creators of media with said representation are people who share my values.
That said⊠when it comes to representation, there are many other problems and one is: the fact of the matter is, we are all unfortunately brainwashed by society to believe dudes are more interesting and important than ladies.
Which leads to stuff like this conversation I had once:
READER: Are you going to write about gay guys?
SARAH: Sure, I want to write a lot of LGBT characters.
READER: No. Are you going to write about a MAN falling desperately in love with ANOTHER MAN?
SARAH: WellâŠ
The answer, as you all know by now, was âyes, yes I amâ but I admit at that moment I sure didnât want to. I felt terrified for my girls, and for girls generally, who get ignored and get the fuzzy end of the lollipop far too much.
One of the many reasons I quit writing online (yep, that is a weirdly coy reference to fanfic, but also disclaimer because: my experience is not universal, fanfic can be an awesome thing, my experience is just my experience) was that I am mainlyâthough obviously not exclusivelyâdrawn to writing about women, and I felt more and more subconsciously like I couldnât do that. I felt hemmed in and frustrated to encounter hostility when a girl was too important, and horrified to see my own writing become more about boysâbecause itâs hard not to believe what people tell you, itâs hard not to buy into the worldâs definition of whoâs important.
But Iâve written 27 books that will never be published (because they are awful) and 24 of them were about girls. Iâve written 7 traditionally published books, and 6 were about girls. I am into ladiesâ stories, and I want to write about them, and I wanted to write about Holly and Angela, but also feared for them hugely.Â
I mean, if people think that the point of a girl in a story is to make a boy happyâand they may not like her thenâhow could I, I thought, get people to care about girls who werenât going to do that? Who werenât there for that?
And maybe it was unfair of me to be thrown into misery because of that particular question I got, because people are into what theyâre into, and can feel free to ask authors for what theyâre into! (Though I would note all-boys-club no-girls-wanted forever is not, to me, representation, and should not be argued as an issue of representation.) It certainly was lovely of the reader to ask me, because knowing people want more of my writing on whatever subject is exhilarating and flattering to hear. But it was also sad and scary.Â
Boys are taken note of more. The Demonâs Lexicon series, Iâve noticed, was on far more LGBT* lists than the Lynburn Legacy seriesâwhich, Iâm not saying I deserve to be on any lists, Iâm just using myself as an example, and Iâm not saying I donât love Jamie and Seb of TDL because I doâeven though the LGBT* characters and their relationship had more pagetime and narrative centrality in TLL. Iâm saying, I also saw Rachel Hawkinsâs Hex Hall on fewer lists than similar-sellinâ books with gay male supporting characters. Iâm saying the dismissal of girls is an endemic problem.
Boysâ stories are considered better and deeper, as we can see by, for instance, how many Printz winners and Printz honours have male or at least dual PoV rather than solely female PoV (hint: the vast majority). This sadly does not go away when the boys are LGBT*âtheir LGBT* stories are considered more important.
So I spent a lot of time worried about a lot of things: will this aid in torpedoing the series, will nobody care at all times infinity, would it have been smarter to put off the reveal of Angelaâs identity to book two, will people ignore them both as if they are dual Invisible Women, will they dismiss them because (insert various reasons)? And sometimes people did.
But there were other people, too: the people I met at conventions who told me how surprised and delighted they were, the girl I saw at a friendâs signing who unexpectedly recognised me and thanked me, the people who cried and who I instantly hugged (and I hope that was okay because it is not okay to impulsively seize people into oneâs arms and press to bosom unless they are cool with it and usually I try to check!), the people who told me at my own signings that they shipped it.Â
There were, of course, many other worries besides girls getting ignored: I am a flawed person and my writing is flawed, and I hoped not to be hurtful but knew I could be. Moreover, Holly and Angela, as pictured above, have the Big Pre-Battle We-Might-Not-All-Survive-This-Climactic-Scene First Kiss, and I knew people had to be invested in both of them and their relationship for the structure of the entire book to work. Â Â Â
The end result is, despite all my worries, I am so, so glad I wrote Holly and Angela. I am so, so glad to see art like this, not only because itâs beautiful (and it is RADIANTLY beautiful) but because itâs celebratory.
They really mattered to me. And it really matters to me that they matter to you.Â
Thank you.
She is great, and beautiful. Sheâs like a star to me, something bright and lovely seen from another world. Sheâs someone elseâs sun. Thatâs how all other girls are to me. Youâre my sun.

Reciprocal Weirdoness (1/?): Kami and Jared Moments -> the balcony scene
Jared abandoned Shakespeare and demanded, âWhat do you think youâre doing?â
âThrowing a pebble,â said Kami defensively. âUhâŠand Iâll pay for the window.â
Jared vanished and Kami was ready to start shouting again when he reemerge with the pebble clenched in his fist. âThis isnât a pebble! This is a rock.â
âItâs possible that your behavior has inspired some negative feelings that caused me to pick a slightly overlarge pebble,â Kami admitted.
Awwww, reciprocal weirdoness! *wipes tear* I love it. I love the juxtaposition of the words and the beautimous picture of romance.
I mean, I figured, if this was going to be my Romance series, letâs address the most famous teen romance of all time.
Then I added weird stuff and destruction of property. Because I am amazing at being romantique. ;)
