“I didn't have confidence in myself in social situations. But I was confident within myself that I knew what was real…”
Octavia E. Butler
The Night Bird Soared on Central Avenue
Acclaimed writer Lynell George weaves a wonderful story in Central Avenue in its musical heyday, the forgotten Jack’s Basket, a legendary night of Bird playing there after Camarillo and the memories of mainstay Buddy Collette. Great storytelling and a great read!

I started working in the Octavia E. Butler archive back in 2016. I had been commissioned by Clockshop, an LA-based arts nonprofit, to create a piece that would be part of its year-long program honoring Butler and her legacy—“Radio Imagination.” As I was finishing up that piece, I realized that there were other threads and paths of Butler’s writing life that were summoning me. This book is the fruit of that side path. It publishes 10/20/2020. Available for preorder at Angel City Press. (angelcitypress.com)
