First Movie Notes
taken as watched
It is Saturday, Memorial Day weekend here in the USA, and as I walk out of work my coworker stops me to ask if I want to buy a hotdog for our Type 1 Diabetes fundraiser. I say that I’m allergic to most hotdogs but will donate. In lieu of a hotdog I was given a fresh bag of popcorn and a can of Coke.
Seemed appropriate to go home and watch my movie with my snackie.
Firstly I would like to say that Unica/You’re the One is easily my favorite song in the franchise so it’s a great opener for this movie. The 3D animation is very pretty and manages to stay true enough to the 2D designs to not be jarring to me. Now I do personally prefer Winx in 2D, but I am unbothered by the 3D in this movie.
It is now Tuesday afternoon. My dog was hospitalized. She’s finally home so resuming movie.
This movie is going to exacerbate the timeline issues isn’t it?
Oh fuck yeah, Oritel has Soul Calibur. Inner 10 year old Hope is hyped. Book animation is beautiful.

So Alfea is a 5 year program but they’re graduating the Winx minus Bloom at 3 years? Wouldn’t this early of a graduation mean the girls are moving forward without core curriculum for their majors? What happens if they want to go to grad school or if a situation comes up they have no context for? What if their employers look at their transcripts and almost half the credits are missing? You can’t apply for some grad programs without specific prerequisites and labs that you get in later years of college. Why is Alfea stunting them like this? Musa, Tecna, and Flora are not royalty, being employed matters!

You know me making Sky deeply religious in my rewrite makes the “we’re going to magic Hell” thing pretty amusing. I had an idea for a scene in my story I’ll likely not include but basically Sky is so overwhelmed his religious trauma activates like a sleeper agent and he starts singing the magic dimension equivalent of the Arky Arky song, hand motions and all. And that’s how they find Oritel. Oritel rounded the corner assuming some poor dude was trapped there with a preschooler and instead finds his best friend’s son having a really embarrassing panic attack. Then they proceed to talk about religion while not noticing who the other guy is for thirty minutes. It’s probably too silly to use but I’m tempted because imagine being reunited with your dad because your boyfriend was going “rise and shine and give god the glory glory” out of stress.
This place looks like Coldharbor.
Wait, where the fuck did Musa come from?! Also pour one out for Riven always having to be corrupted.
I forgot everyone was literally turned to stone. It’s giving Magic of Pegasus actually. Marion chilling out in Soul Calibur is also something I forgot.

The sword says “Absolutely fucking not, no girls allowed” apparently. I knew there was a reason Sky reminded me of Siegfried.

Bloom not being told months earlier Sky got coronated is really dumb, this has bothered me since I was nine. Like this is a major political event, it would literally be in the news. There were probably foreign royal guests like I don’t know FUCKING Stella and Aisha! There’s no reason this had to be a secret other than for pointless drama. I like drama but this plot point is nonsense.
Restored Domino is beautiful but I must admit I wish we could keep some of the snowy landscapes. The architecture is one of my favorite restored features.
OK but that’s fucking brutal, them finding out their eldest is dead mid reunion! Poor Marion and Oritel.

Final Thoughts
This movie was entertaining, probably better if you aren’t pausing to write for a while. There are some issues I have, mainly the really dumb “Sky can’t tell everyone he was coronated” plot. Most of my other gripes are an extension of the timeline issues from the first 3 seasons in regards to Domino and the Company of Light.
While I generally like 2D better, the animation was gorgeous in this movie. I loved the backgrounds especially but all the characters looked good for the most part.
My biggest petty complaint is the voice acting. None of the voices felt correct to me. It genuinely took me out of the film several times because nobody sounded like themselves to me. That bothered me.
In conclusion: good movie, lots of interesting bits to play with. The Harpy Lady was fucking useless though. I understand why I forgot about her, she was deeply pointless.
While I doubt I’ll follow super closely in my own fanfic, that is not because the movie is bad, it’s creative liberty.
