By Czeck writer Karel Čapek, inventor of the term ‘robot’ as well!
This is one of my husband’s favorite short stories. He quotes it from memory. I’m pretty sure he can recite the entire thing from memory.
This is a tremendously impactful short story and every time I see it, it serves as an excellent reboot button for my state of mind.

I’m an oddity, a commodity, a rumor. I’m the king’s favored. His prized saddle. The one he gold-touched and keeps in a cage at the top of his castle, my body bearing the mark of his ownership and favoritism. The gilded pet.
I’m the darling of King Midas, ruler of Highbell and the Sixth Kingdom of Orea. People flock to see me just as much as they come to look upon his gleaming castle worth more than all the riches in the entire realm.
I’m the gold-plated prisoner. But what a pretty prison it is.
GILD by Raven Kennedy (The Plated Prisoner Series #1)
Another backlog papercraft! I can’t believe I missed this one too, even though I’ve posted Plated Prisoner content before. This was my first fanart for the series, back when I was gushing about the greedy pleasure that is The Plated Prisoner series by @ravenkennedybooks. It brought me out of my reading slump after having to put down ACOSF for a bit (20% in). While Gild (book 1) had my curiousity, Glint (book 2) absolutely had my attention! They basically claimed an entire weekend, the world building and character designs were so addicting! I had papercraft designs ready for both books and had planned to release them together, but I probably won’t finish the second one until the third book’s release! *GRABBY HANDS* Be sure to read the content warnings if you plan to dive into these! Holy cripes this papercraft was such an endeavor with all the different glitter and metallic papers. The lighting for the final photograph was so critical to get right. I used 8 different types of gilded paper and a metallic vellum for the harp strings l. ✨🧡 *****SPOILERS FOR GILD BELOW***** I hope I didn’t spoil this from the title alone, but I reaaaaally could smell the fools gold oozing from Midas’ every word in book one. With Auren’s affinity for the harp and her SUPER cool golden ribbons that run down her spine, how. HOW. Could I not make this allusion? Midas literally playing her. UGH The second design for Glint is just as good, featuring my favorite egnima character, Rip.
Here it is! Part 1 of a new parody series of illustrations themed as Jude in Wonderland! Ever since book 1 of The Folk of the Air, I had always loved the symbolism of Cardan considering Jude the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ of Elfhame.
I thought it would be fun to re-imagine these characters in the roles of the classic tale, but with a TFOTA twist. This first illustration has Alice!Jude meeting Cheshire!Cardan. And yes, Cardan has cat ears! I thought these two paired nicely with this iconic exchange:
… said the Cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.” “How do you know I’m mad?“ said Alice. "You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.”
I’ve mentioned before how I found Cardan so closely aligned with Cheshire - clever with his words, no alliances, disappears with a grin. This exchange just solidified it for me.
I went HAM on this environment here, which I normally don’t enjoy doing. But by combining it with some Gustav Klimt-inspired textures, I had a little bit more passion fueling my pursuit at creating a Wonderland / Elfhame landscape. I have two more of these illustration planned with this parody crossover; so stay tuned!
It’s DOOOOONE! It’s finally finished! Oh my gosh, what a journey this has been! I started concept on this last July (2020) and have been working in chunks via Instagram Lives to complete this sequel papercraft of the Six of Crows for over a year! I’m so excited to present Hook And Crook, inspired by a specific scene that happens in Crooked Kingdom. I’ve been stating this over and over again during the lives, but there were specific mirrors happening here between the two papercrafts that wholly define the dynamics of the characters and the two books.
We talked about how the symbols in the facade of the Slat in Featherdark (Six of Crows papercraft) represented the strengths of each character (cane, knife, guns, bombs etc). The crow is standing proud and upright, above the city, to symbolize the upper-hand that the dregs had during SOC.
Now, the tables have turned in Hook And Crook. The symbols on the facade of the hotel show the character’s weaknesses (gloves, a red bird, gambling wheel, Dunyasha’s stars, paintbrush & laurels etc). The crow is defensively crouching with its hackles raised, the city above and oppressing - all representing the dregs having to turn and fight under dire circumstances. And bonus! When you put the two side-by-side, a little nod to a certain Ravkan symbol takes form! What a stupidly fun project this was! I’m so happy it’s finally finished and I thank you all for those who joined me in the lives to watch the process! (so sorry for the low quality on this; Featherdark is my most pilfered artwork for unsanctioned merch 💔)
