NG+ good ending but the only difference is Yosuke’s a girl now (but doesn’t know that) and Yu is… a hot mess. To put it very lightly.

Remixed Signals! Or: Rise being roped into a murder case wasn’t her definition of a nice break from the idol business. Featuring a cool blue tanuki in an equally cool hat, Teddie the bear pun menace, and local dogboy delinquent Yosuke if he’d learnt that biting first and ask questions later would solve all his grief and self image issues (it does not)

There’s other swaps too like Lovers!Chie, a kid athlete on hiatus due to an injury, Fortune!Yui, The Detective Princess of Inaba who goes through The Horrors, and Priestess!Kanji who’s got imposter syndrome for days.

Here, have some more organized Souyo thoughts from me that nobody asked for: Ok but does the end of Yosuke’s character arc not make sense to anyone else or is that just me?

Like… the fist fight scene they had was great, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a weird plot point to end on. If he wants to be truly equal to Yu… why would they fight??

Maybe to show how they’re equal physically I guess but like… Yosuke’s character arc is centered a lot around his own self perception and how the town both hating him and his coworkers treating him as the Junes Complaints Department… it’s very inner conflict driven.

So… they throw hands to help him resolve his issues? I mean sure I guess- but also like-

“I think out of everyone, I wanted to be acknowledged by you the most.”

“You’re special to me, you know?”

Like COME ON. you can’t just have him say that in his last couple SL events and NOT resolve that… because a fight doesn’t make sense to resolve it.

Call me biased, but a confession would have. Yosuke’s SL10 event being a fist fight instead of a confession despite dialogue like that still being in the game is my smoking gun for the romance route getting cut VERY LATE into developing the game.

More heavily disorganized 12am Souyo thoughts from me that nobody asked for: THEY. MIRROR. EACH OTHER. SO DAMN MUCH.

Exhibit A: Shape language and how cool persona design is.

Yu by himself is very round, and Yosuke is sharp. Then you take a look at Izanagi and Jiraiya and the script is flipped. Izanagi, Yu’s inner self, is sharp, and Jiraiya is round.

Perhaps Izanagi looks like as much of a bancho as he does because Yosuke was there with him. He’s with someone he can finally be real around (woohoo I’m team The Narukami parents suck and should step on Lego bricks lol), and because of the situation they’re in he’s gotta play up the cool guy act a bit. If not just to keep Yosuke from getting attacked by the Shadows, but maybe it’s also to convince himself that he’s worth that attention, somehow. I dunno.. anyway!!

Whereas with Yosuke and Jiraiya… well, I mean, look at him? He’s a goofball disco ninja frog. And also this bit of dialogue during Yosuke’s SL “I feel like with you, I don’t have to lie.”

He doesn’t have to lie about being a silly loser who loves so so much with his golden heart, and Yu likewise doesn’t need to lie about his preferences and tastes. He can be himself now.

They both can. They both are.

I think Yosuke and Yu on some level have become comfort characters for me and y’all— I cannot describe how freeing it is to have experienced Souyo when I played through persona 4 golden for the first time.

I played the game at a point in my life I now realize was maybe the worst I’ve ever been in terms of being a fan in fan spaces (I was deep into miraculous ladybug brain rot, but like, not even that. I was into the idea of it, nothing close to the execution. If asked I might talk about it in future, but eh)

No but for real, shipping a ship and engaging with a media that I love so deeply that it almost feels wrong to do for me is the weirdest thing, and I mean that in the best possible way.

There’s something so fun about writing Adachi in like. The worst way imaginable I think. I look at his character in game over all and think “ooh you are so fun to hate. Ooh, I can make this guy worse actually.” He’d be very fun to make worse (and a great plot device for Souyo angst-)

You guys ever think about Yosuke Hanamura persona 4 is really a hopeless romantic and how him and Kanji aren’t as different and how the Rise arc of the game kinda tears the scooter scenes apart as just an act?

All the talk about ‘up close and personal’ plans after he gets his scooter license and then like a week or two later in front of a celebrity crush, Yosuke just gets flustered and stutters (and forgets what ganmodoki is?? Despite Kanji explaining it like five minutes earlier).

He’s a flustered hopeless romantic who, when he loves, he loves deeply and sometimes if the crush is that strong he forgets about stuff he’s told because he’s so overwhelmed with the feelings he can’t think straight.

I also like how Yosuke’s crush on Rise doesn’t completely distract him from what’s really important, even though he trips over his own words (though to be fair that is typical Yosuke behavior, he’s a fumbler for a reason)

Oh, and this is the big one: When Shadow Rise finally makes a clear appearance on the Midnight Channel, Yosuke is extremely freaked out by the idea of Rise ‘bearing it all’, and he’s the most.. I guess openly determined to save her out of all the IT at that point.

You’d think what with all the talk about girlfriends and getting ‘up close and personal’, Yosuke would take advantage… heck, you might think he’d be against going in immediately…

But he isn’t.

He barely knows Rise by that point, and yet not once does Yosuke ever think that he could take advantage of that situation… but you know what he does think of?

Saving her.

His first thought after the Midnight Channel turned off was about saving Rise.
