Ok so far I've got a few ideas on what connects them but these are not perfect
Technically Impressive/Inovative
Weird/Experimental/Subversive
"How did this get mainstream" or "How did this get funding" or "How is this good at all"
Also, perhaps, more specific elements:
Cosmic Horror or Cosmic Comfort elements (be it the multiverse, branching timelines, the end of civilization, outer space, aliens, the internet, universal conciousness, omnipresent surveillance, even The Narrative Itself, characters know they are in a video game, etc)
General chaos/weirdness/absurdity (in the form of fast pacing, visuals, cinematography, pacing, structure, layout, premise, etc)
Mundanity. So, if you take out all the weirdness, it's actually all very normal. Like, these characters are just guys and maybe even a little lame. Or very lame. Not over the top. These people are painfully un-special.
Tonal instability. Am I meant to take this seriously or not, or both. I will cry and laugh at the same time. "Why is the sausage finger universe making me cry" or "it doesn't make sense. Compels me though."
Unreal ammounts of good will and earnestness and/or 7 layers of irony that cancel each other out.
"It's all meaningless. And yet."
These don't apply to every single work listed or they do to varying degrees. But I need a way to like, systematise it somehow.
