Rita couldn’t help the smile that tugged at her lips as she overheard Meg with her customer. Bleeding hearts on their sixth whiskey, neat of the night were not exactly the world’s cheeriest of conversationalists at the best of times. You’d have to be on that at least to think that Meg wanted to hear your latest sob story. Rita gave it another beat or so before finishing up and heading over. “Man, you just cannot catch a break. I think you just need to take some time for yourself now, bud. Forget about that guy, you deserve way better. How about leaving the keys, calling a cab and heading home for the night? It’ll be better tomorrow,” she winked, clearing the empty glass. Rita gave Meg the slightest nudge, holding back a smile- “You ready to get outta here?”

Meghan continued to hold a fake smile as Rita urged the guy to get the hell over it and get out. From what she could tell, it seemed like Rita had somehow caught even more of the man’s conversation that she had because she barely had any context for what had finally shut the man up. “God, yes.” She exclaimed, dumping the rag she was using to clean the bar and grabbing her coat. “If I have to stand her for one more second, I swear one of these customers won’t survive their next shot.” Meghan hung her coat over one arm and linked her other with Rita’s as they headed towards the door. “My hero.” She faked a swoon.
