thoughts on killing eve and the interviews
I thought the interviews are very in line with what the writers have always been saying. I donāt think the romance is dead by any means. Yes it wasĀ ādismantledā when Villanelle shot Eve, but I also think that itās clearly going to come back. When I think about the context of that romance, it was very much delusion. When the romance hits again, I think itās going to be a more honest sort of relationship - as honest as it can be given who they are.Ā
āSo I think youāve just got to keep that alive and keep that sense of mystery and surprise going. So I hope that what the fans ask: āwhatās going to happen next to this relationship?ā
This part of the interview really gives me hope. They know what this show centers around. I know people have zeroed in on:Ā āIt can just be turned off like a light switch. So if at any point Villanelle feels itās not reciprocated, we knew that was a really dangerous moment too. We knew the background, and we knew what the truthful behavior would be, but we didnāt know the detail of it.ā
But that doesnāt surprise me. The way I personally see this (which could be wrong) is that Villanelle is trying to turn her emotions off right there. I donāt think it was actually like a switch, and my reasoning for this is that Villanelle was still hung up on Anna at the beginning of season 1. You can tell that from episode 2. And I think Eve and Villanelleās relationship is severely different. Eve is a different person than Anna.
My point is, Villanelle doesnāt understand her emotions, but sheās been told sheās a psychopath and rolls with it. Which brings me to another portion of the interview.Ā
āShe is somebody with psychopathic tendencies and sheās probably a whole complex of other bits and pieces, but sheās a way for us to explore, if you like, a fantasy of what it would be like to live without fear or anxiety about circumstance.ā
They did not flat out call Villanelle a psychopath. Sheās more than that, and I think we saw bits of that this season and will see more to come.Ā
Now, as for where they are going I think that there is going to be a lot of distance between Villanelle and Eve at first. I think the spell over them has been broken, and they are going to see each other in different ways.Ā
āBecause the truth of it is that when theyāre together, itās very difficult for both of them. Of course thereās a huge amount of electricity, but thereās also a huge amount of complicated loathing. Thereās all sorts of negative things that come too with this obsession. Eve is really not yet at a place where sheās become so cavalier and so detached from reality that she isnāt aware of how dangerous this whole thing is.āĀ - Emerald Fennell
I really think Emerald has a great grasp on these characters. Eve isnāt where Villanelle wanted her to be, and Villanelle doesnāt see Eve for all that she is yet. There is a loathing in their relationship, it isnāt clear cut romance and never has been. They love each other, but they also want to kill each other sometimes.Ā
āWe all want Eve to go bad, but the pleasure of āKilling Eve,ā for me, is showing it in a way that is far more honest and weird and distressing than what we expect. Because the truth is so much weirder and creepier, particularly for women, because we spend so much of our time hiding how we feel, particularly when it comes to sex and anger and all those kinds of dark emotions.ā
This quote is really my favorite out of all the interviews. Like, Eve isnāt going to just snap out of it next season and be normal. Sheās still descending, and I think part of this descent needs to be away from Villanelle. She needs to come into her own. Be her own person and figure out what that means.Ā
When Villanelle and Eve come together, and when the romance is back in full force; I think it will burn brighter. Theyāll know each other, theyāll know what the expect. The delusions needed to go away to make way for their story.
Anyways. This show is completely unpredictable. I could be totally wrong, but so far I donāt have a reason to lose faith - personally. I understand people who are mad, I get that. It could go terribly. For now, Iām going to keep enjoying the ride.Ā
Youāre Mine [pt.2] - eveās perspective in 2x08
welcome to part 2. again, iāll be unpacking eveās perspective in the finale in this post. iāve already uploaded villanelleās, and tomorrow, iāll make a post about why i think the finale was, plot and character-wise, a great choice for the show going into season 3. letās jump in. EVEās thoughts and feelings in the finale. something thatās important to remember is that while villanelle has always lived a life of extremes, eveās life was exceptionally ordinary until last year. in this past week or so, her husband has left (even if it was a long time coming), she saw someone murdered in front of her for the first time, has been confronted with the reality of aaronās weapon, and has semi-hooked up with villanelle. sheās holding it together like the absolute legend she is, but just try and contextualise the finale within the sheer amount of upheaval eveās undergone in even the last few days. for eve, the episode essentially kicks off with two almost simultaneous adrenaline shots: villanelle saying āgentlemanā, and hugo getting shot. she nearly gets hunted down herself, and then makes her first major choice of the finale: to leave hugo and go after villanelle instead, who she assumes is in similar danger, and who, ultimately, she cares about more.
eve acts her way out of the hotel and into aaronās house, all the while believing sheās probably headed to the even worse of two evils. she grabs the letter opener and goes in, prepared to defend villanelle, which is an important precedent for later. but then villanelleās just⦠fine. she abandoned hugo, dying, and their world-saving (or so eve thinks) recordings of aaronās dealings, for nothing.
then villanelleās revealing aaronās a killer, and aaronās offering villanelle something eve is afraid she wonāt refuse. and he verbalises one of eveās deepest unspoken fears: that villanelle WILL get bored of her. that she canāt possibly keep villanelleās interest once theyāre no longer caught in a hurricane of external pressures. and then she has to deal with the absolute overload that is the question, push come to shove, would villanelle hurt her? while villanelle never considers hurting eve here, eve understandably doesnāt realise that. after all, as far as she knows, villanelle killed anna, as well as dozens of other people. villanelle thinks sheās been clear about how strongly she feels, but eve is caught at the crossroads of kenny, hugo, jess, carolyn, konstantin ā all these people who promise her that no matter how real it feels, villanelle is a psychopath, could flip the switch in a second. thatās a terrifying possibility: that the woman youāre obsessed with, have given up everything for, might end you and walk away. shrug it off.
villanelle kills aaron, and eveās currently up to seeing two bodies in about fifteen minutes. while she hates aaron and isnāt particularly bothered by his death, sheās abruptly sure that theyāve blown the mission entirely, and quite apart from carolyn crushing her under heel, eveās afraid that their screw-up might result in aaronās weapon going public, that he might have some contingency plan they werenāt authorised to know about. eveās all messed around; villanelleās surprisingly chill. but eveās used to villanelle thinking of the immediate, small picture ā eve is sure itās up to her to get them out of all this. sheās concerned for both of them, and believes villanelle truly doesnāt understand the scope of the trouble theyāre in. notice that she uses plural language. āweā, āusā. sheās already trying to plan THEIR way out of it. villanelle is a tacit premise, a guaranteed.

ā[Jodie is a] dance partner who knows a couple of moves you donāt. Villanelle is a very unpredictable character. And I think Jodie has been able to find freedom in acting in playing someone like that. It makes for wonderful spontaneity. Itās like you see them in a box together. Thereās a scene at the end of the season that is extremely physical. It was tough to shoot because we had to do it in tiny pieces. But at the end of it, something happened quite spontaneously; it was not scripted, which I think changed a lot of the meaning in the scene between us. And itās in some ways a way that Villanelle expresses her care for me. Iāll leave it at that.āĀ - Sandra OhĀ (x)
