Field Visit and Site Analysis
For this project, we visited F. Nilandhoo to conduct a detailed site analysis in order to gain a better understanding of the on-the-ground urban dynamics at both the regional and island levels.
This allowed us to identify vulnerabilities that could stymie the development of a future resilient island.

The sectional perspective shows the wind entering through the open spaces allowing cold air to flow through, meanwhile the hot air rises and escapes through the skylights.
The common spaces acts as a balcony space which allows ventilation as well as a view of the neighborhood.

Both of these organisms are able to live separately but their symbiotic relationship makes it easier for them to depend on one another.

The final crit was very informative and interesting..
I was able to understand what was missing and what could have been done to make my design better

Reliance means having to trust or depend on someone or something. In this case both islanders and the floating island depending on one another.

Conceptual and Narrative Schematic Plans
For this part of the project, I chose Sea Anemone and Clownfish as a Concept.Ā
The idea behind the concept is that, the elderly people on the island being hesitant to further developments and collaborations with others, other than within the island. This could mean limiting younger generations to sources.
Just like how the sea anemone and clownfish have a symbiotic relationship. It could be possible for the islanders and floating island to coexist and benefit from one another.

Precedent Study
For this part of the project, we were to choose an existing building to study and analyze before designing one on our own
The project I have chosen isĀ San Francisco Floating house by Robert Nebolon Architects.
The spaces in the precedent study were designed to accommodate a couple, and was focused on creating big spaces for families.Ā
Light rays stream through the large windows into the house making the floating house lively. Moreover, each room consisted of large black frame windows with the wooden flooring

Designing hulls-
Different types of hull were designed and tested in the water for the most suitable type
Experimenting - salt harvesting
This batch was left to dry naturally with sunlight, however ended up taking about 3 days.
This batch was obtained using heat- on stove.
Final result- salts crystallized

A successful? end to the group work part of the project.
A lot was learnt from the weeks of brainstorming and sleep deprived nights in the studio. This could not have been achieved without the great chemistry (pun intended) in the group!

F.Nilandhoo is known for its rich cultural heritage.
First one shows ruins of the temple which was was used for worshipping in the olden days. It is now known asĀ āFoahmathiā.The second one is known asĀ āVevuā and it was used as a public bathing area.
The well shown above is found in Hukuru Miskiy, which was the second mosque built in Maldives. Coral tombstones with Arabic inscription can also be seen around hukuru Miskiy.

Oh what a day! Carried out a Masterplan Workshop; both rigorous and exciting. Moreover it turned out to be fruitful. What did we accomplish?
Masterplan Location & SWOT
In groups of three, we picked out three different locations for each of our masterplans from within the vast lagoon of F.Nilandhoo.
Produced a SWOT analysis for our designated locations, identifying the different aspects and factors that we should be aware of as we continue our design.
Main Income Source for Masterplan
Determined the various possible economic directions we can explore to generate an income that can sustain the masterplan settlement as an entity and community. Ultimately choosing one option to be the main income source.
Our group chose 'Salt Harvesting' as a main income source, due to its intriguing potential.
Theme and Conceptual Zoning Model
The theme our group decided to give our masterplan is "Bissaaveli", in dhivehi refers to a saltwater pond surrounded by a strip of sand. An attempt to connect our theme to our possible income source and livelihood, 'Salt Harvesting'.
We also developed a conceptual model featuring the main zones that our masterplan would require in terms of our location and distance from the main island.
All of these will become more developed and refined and as they do I shall share them with you here. ;)
