In 1946, Yves Montand and Edith Piaf appeared together in the French film, Etoile sans Lumière. (Translation in English: Star Without Light) The movie marked Montand's screen debut. He was Piaf's lover at the time of filming. Her role was of a young hotel maid whose voice is used to dub a silent film star. The plot echoes Singin' in the Rain (1952), but it preceded that musical by six years. The film was the only film collaboration of the two stars. Piaf made only 8 films in her lifetime due to her many concert commitments and recording sessions. Montand made over 60 films in the course of his career over a period of almost 45 years. He died in 1991 at age 70. Piaf died in 1963 at age 47 the cause being liver cancer. However, years of severe illness, substance addiction, following multiple car accidents, and extreme physical exhaustion contributed to her early death.
