resignation settled over her, a feeling she was now all too familiar with, and her heart sank. she shouldâve known, she should have stayed away. how many times had she told herself that it was too good to be true? hindsight was a wonderful thing. âwow, okay.â she snatched her hand away before he could grasp it; she couldnât quite bear for him to touch her now. âkinda wish youâd have figured this out a little bit sooner,â her tone was bitter, âwouldâve saved us both a lot of time and effort.â despite the obvious lack of humour about the whole situation, a breath of laughter forced its way past her lips. âoh, spare me. we both know who youâre doing this for, and it certainly isnât me.â
as her hand slipped from his, forrest knew in that moment that he was forever going to be known as an asshole for this. and, anybody would be right in thinking so. there were just too many secrets that he held close to his chest, and the last thing he wanted was for someone as sweet as her to find out the terrible things he had done. of course, it was only his own insecurities making him believe such a thing, but he was not yet brave enough to find out what really would happen if he were to divulge. âiâm sorry,â he started, though knew that no amount of apologies would rectify this. âitâs not something iâve done lightly. you know, i wished it never got to this point either. i suppose i was hoping something would be different, but it isnât and i know that nothing i say will make this right.â forrest sighed heavily, closing his eyes briefly. âi donât regret anything though, and i have enjoyed every moment with you. it breaks me to have to do this, but you just wouldnât understand. iâm not who you think i am, and if you were to find out - especially if we were to take things to the next step - then i fear youâd be far more upset and angry. i am doing this for you, i swear on it. i just...â forrest was trying to be as truthful as he could be, but it was difficult to do so whilst sticking to his story. âcould you really see us together in the long run?â
