Do you know of work or piece that explores the California-Texas rap connection?

Ronin Ro covers a little of this in his Death Row book Have Gun, Will Travel but that book is not at all essential. As I remember the key connecting point is honorary sixth or seventh NWA member The D.O.C., who is originally from Dallas. Prior to Death Row he and Suge were planning a similar label to be built around another Dallas rapper by the name of Chocolate.

Remember how UPN had them Black comedy shows on lock til WB took over the prime time Black TV spotlight? Shit, remember the day UPN premiered?! I was at Celebration Station in Houston, Texas when Ch. 20 became the new UPN channel. Spent many early evenings watching Sparks and Homeboys from Outer Space and all that old bullshit in elementary school.
