The 35th Parallel | Valerie Chiang
What fascinates me about the American West is that there is no permanence. Civilization simply passed through, first with wagon roads, then railroads, then highways. Throughout the past century and a half, the West experienced continued change as a result of technological advancements and increased commercialization that every couple of decades, it ushered in a new era. The transcontinental railroad replaced the horse, and the automobile replaced the train. Now that mid-twentieth century car culture has diminished, all the remnants of the past are either left fading on the side of the road or their bits and pieces collected for preservation to signify their passing.
These photographs were taken along the 35th parallel north, tracing the path of the original wagon roads to Interstate 40 from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Barstow, California. With this project, I want to explore the West’s history of mobility, and also hope to show it as still evolving, quietly moving toward an uncertain future.

fool forever - thao & the get down stay down !!!
heart pounding as i just received an email from my professor asking about a final paper from last term that i still did not complete yet
so far my draft is at 8000 words lol
honestly feeling pretty urgent about it because i want to prepare a poster for the ethnography in canada conference and because of recent events involving the university’s decision re: fossil fuel divestment
ah, life is short
Realized I am less anxious about writing emails, and life, although I remain a bumbling and hardly-functioning perfectionist.
Thanks anti-anxiety meds! This is the new cyborg! self/other, inside/outside, natural/unnatural, etc.

it’s like an interactive and mobile installation that invites the participation of the audience to alter the space while raising money for charity all the while making a comment on the temporal and impermanent nature of (wo)man
JENNIFER DO YOU KNOW SUBOI
yes i just listened to her new song that was featured on the fader lol it was very intense. my favourite music video of hers is the one where she sings about friendship and wears wire-framed glasses.
