can we just appreciate this masterpiece i finally have in my possession
âIt was fun and dangerous, which I believe is a winning combo. The dragons were my best friends- my father was a dragonologist, you see, so I grew up on the sanctuary, surrounded by the most beautiful beasts. But...â Valka didnât dare mention any of her past to Toothless, especially about the real reason she retreated back to the sanctuary after her Quidditch career. âLetâs just say I wanted to try something new after awhile. Howâs the tea?â
Stirring in Toothlessâs two sugar lumps, Valka responded âDonât get me wrong, I like Merida as well. Sheâs terribly bright and full of spirit- but that can work against her sometimes.â She laughed at her studentâs honesty. âItâs not easy, certainly, but itâs fun! Before I had this job, I worked with dragons in Sweden, you know, which was exciting, but I missed Hogwarts, so here I am!âÂ
âSlow down, Fawn, dear!â Valka laughed. She didnât expect anything less, of course, for she knew by now that once Fawn began to talk about animals, there was no stopping her. Still, Valka was a professor (of sorts) and she wouldnât allow herself to let any of her students in danger. âIâll help you, but tell me about this animal. Depending on what it is, there may be a better way of saving it.â
âSo long as itâs fixed, the muggle way is perfectly alright with me. Besides that, all we need from you is just to show up and be your cheerful self!â Valka reached for her copper tea kettle and poured Toothless a generous cup. âThe first years are, well, first years- an odd combination of shy and eager. Not sure if Iâd say the Puffs have any stars in particular, but thatâs because I had to focus my attention on the Dunbroch triplets from Gryffindor. Theyâre as ornery as their sister, and maybe more so!â She laughed, reaching for the cream and sugar. âDo you take one lump or two, dear?â
âWell hello, Ella! So glad to see you again.â Valka meant this, for every year Ella Savatier always turned out to be one of the most polite and considerate students at Hogwarts. Still, she always seemed to have a timid, anxious way about her, and this time was no exception. âPoor dear,â Valka thought, âI would be a nervous wreck myself if I had to live with the Tremaines.â
âLet me take a look at it,â Valka said, reaching for the broom. âDear me, someoneâs put quite the hex on this! May take me awhile to figure out just how to fix it. In the meantime, do come into my office and have some tea. You look as though you could use a good cup of it.â
Valka hadnât expected anything less from the ever-helpful Toothless, always eager to do whatever he could for his fellow Quidditch-lovers. âWell,â she started, âif any of our equipment is damaged this year, I could use a handyman to help repair it. And with the Thorstons as Hufflepuffâs beaters, thatâs bound to happen!â Remembering her manners, Valka stepped aside and opened the door wider. âDo come in, Toothless, and we can discuss this further. I was just having a cup of tea, would you like one?â
Fiddling with her case, Moana beamed as she walked through the front door of the castle she loved so much.  That smile quickly turned to a scoff as the entire contents of all her luggage spilled out of her bags with vigor, as if to say âlet us breathe! Get us out of here!â.  âJust my luck, and on the first day back too,â the girl mumbled to herself hoping to detract any attention away from herself and the goings-on in her vicinity.  When she noticed a new sign on the postings board outside the Great Hall, the spunky adventurer laughed harder; âSTUDENT CURFEW WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED.â the message read.  âCurfew? Oh, please.  All the best things happen in the castle at night.â  She thought aloud, not really caring should anyone hear.
On her way to eat in the Great Hall, Valka noticed a smiling, tan-skinned laughing at the sign on the door. The coach wouldâve laughed herself at that age, and almost laughed along with the student, but tried hard to keep an air of professionalism- she hadnât had this job for long, after all. âThat may be true, but there are just as many adventures to be found at Hogwarts to be found in the day,â she said, before grinning and bending down to help the poor girl pick up her things. âQuite a spill you had just then. Itâs Moana, yes? I havenât seen much of you since I taught you to fly as a first year. I hear you prefer the water, anyway,â she added with a wink.Â
GRYFFINDOR: âBrave doesnât mean youâre not scared. It means you go on even though youâre scared.â âAngie Thomas (The Hate U Give)
âToothless! So good to see you. How was your summer?â It was the rare student that was able to get close wot Valka without being on any Quidditch team, but Toothless was practically the Hufflepuff teamâs mascot, so she often saw him on and round the pitch. Not that she minded, not at all! Toothless, whose true name she could never remember, was one of the most charming young men at Hogwarts, so she never minded his company. âYes, you were rambling a little, but thatâs alright. Sometimes I do it myself. Not always, but sometimes, especially when- see? Iâm doing it now!â
Iâve been here for 10 minutes.
âOh, donât say that, Vidia! You...well, you bring such energy to the team that Iâm sure they appreciate, â Valka struggled to compliment this walking, talking thorn in her side, adding, just for fun, âBesides, you may be the best seeker now, but slip up and the title may go to Miss Tomago from Ravenclaw or even your friend Tinkerbell from Gryffindor. Use a school broom for now- theyâre old but sturdy and will suit you just fine. Your broom will show up eventually.â She nearly gasped at the gall this girl had to accuse her of ever barking at her students, but what was she to expect? This was Vidia Morgan. âAs a matter of fact, flying class with the first years just ended. Iâm on my way back to office for tea.â
Iâve been here for 10 minutes.
"No matter how good you are, you and all the other players could use a bit of extra practice. Itâs a new year, after all, and we went to start it off right, yes? Anyway, Iâm sure your teammates would miss you greatly,â Valka lied through the skin of her teeth. She knew well enough that even the other Slytherins found Vidia hard to get along with. âWell, for one, you could always ask to borrow someone elseâs broom. Iâm sure one of your friends who isnât on the team wouldnât mind.â Valka stopped just short of asking if Vidia even had any friends, though it was hard to resist.Â
After a flying lesson with the first years, Valka was able to retire to her office for a warm, soothing cup of tea. They were a rowdy bunch, especially the three Dunbroch boys- âThe three of them and Merida to boot? Bless their parentsâ she thought- but she remembered being just as rambunctious and rebellious at their age, eager to take to the skies like the dragons her father studied. Valka reminisced about that first day, about showing off her nautral flying skills to the class and especially to Stoick- but her trip down memory lane was interrupted by a knock at the door. Getting up from her chair, Valka opened the door and asked âMay I help you?â
